I did not go to Kyoto for Shigyoshiki last year, I was planning on going this year instead. Little did I know at the time that it would be cancelled, like so many events around the world. Hopefully everything will be back to normal in 2022, meanwhile, here are some pictures taken at the start of the year in 2019.
The dancing fans of Geiko and Maiko of Kamishichiken are made with a similar design, with 2 colored bands made of 3 lines each, over a gold background. However, where the Maiko’s dancing fans have red lines, the Geiko’s dancing fans have green lines.
So, I saw this picture by Balbo42 on Instagram and Umehina is wearing a maneki kanzashi. I thought only maiko could wear kanzashi, can geiko wear too? This also lead me to another question, just how strict are the karyukai dressing rules?
Geiko across the gokagai can wear maezashi (only Gion Kobu stops wearing maezashi once they become jimae), so this isn’t an issue at all. As to dressing rules, they’re still very strict ^^
This is a maezashi, both Maiko and Geiko can wear those. Not to be mistaken with the daikan, the front kanzashi worn only by Maiko. To illustrate the difference, here is another picture of Umehina, but this time when she was Maiko and wearing a maneki kanzashi as daikan. I took this picture very early in December, so the maneki were still blank at the time. I hope this helps clarify.

Something personal
I really miss Umechie.
She was the reason I got interested in the world of Maiko and Geiko. And since she’s gone, it’s hard for me to keep up…
Hi there
Thank you posting this personal message. I really admire when people open up like this and show their true colors, it’s very hard to do sometimes.
I would like to offer some unsolicited advice as i really love your blog and find your work a vital part of Geishablr and ultimately promotes the Karyukai and the little kagai of Kamishichiken in a very special way.
Umechie was a one of a kind Maiko and i would argue that she symbolized many firsts for enthusiasts, and we got to follow along on her path through this demanding patch of her life. Sadly she left and her departure left many of us empty and at a loss. We all speculated many months about her curious case and when she was gone, life went on in Kamishichiken as if she had never played the important role to them as it did to us.
I understand that Umechie’s leaving left us without closure and i’m not saying that we deserve it but i do understand the void she left.
The advice i can give as someone who has had to digest leavings of favorites like Fukue, Katsuna and my first heart break Kyouka, is to think about the aspects of the Karyukai that are independent of personalities and personal destinies.
Your Kimono and Obi database is unlike anything on the internet, very specialized and a treasure for researchers. Please continue this and maybe expand as Umeno has this tradition of recycling Kanzashi.
Don’t negate your personal feelings about Geimaiko culture. You are a veteran of the topic and contribute so much to the spreading of information, it would be a shame if this well would run dry.
In the end, it is up to you. We all understand when motivation and inspiration leaves us and all i can offer you is a shoulder to lean on and an open heart to hear you out if you want to divulge.
Stay safe and healthy! Keep going!

A presentation of the Geishas of Matsuyama
(note: the video is in French).
I’m starting a YouTube channel that will be dedicated to sharing knowledge about the world of Geishas. I’d be delighted if you would be inclined to follow me there as well. However, note that this YouTube channel will be in French only. 🙇
Not feeling comfortable traveling outside of Tokyo in the current context. People of destination cities are not really keen on receiving travelers either.
Since I refrain from doing unnecessary travels, I take the time to appreciate where I am. This park is just between my home and my workplace. It lightens my daily walk to and from work. 🌸
What I have seen is being used by Maiko and Geiko to protect them from the coronavirus is not really reassuring. I hope everyone is OK.
