Considering Lies premieres tomorrow, I thought it would be best to upload this now.

And here is part 2 of my analysis on Kagami acting as a reflection of both Marinette and Adrien. This time I’ll be discussing how Kagami is a foil to Marinette and vice versa.

Season 4 actually proved me wrong in a lot of things. But this was still fun to write

It's worth noting how Wishmaker and Crocoduel have turned the table so to speak on the existing imbalance between the Lukanette and Adrigami ships.

When I say imbalance I mean how one love rival worked as such while the other didn't.

We all know where I'm getting at, right?

Kagami worked as a love rival for Marinette because the both of them were interested in Adrien, but Luka didn't work as a rival for Adrien because he loves Marinette, not Ladybug.

Case on point, while the Adrigami interactions brought Marinette immense amounts of pain, in two seasons since Luka's debut, the most we've got out of Adrien is his looking perplexed when Luka took Marinette ice skating and that one comment he made in Stormy Weather 2.

There's also the fact that because Marinette's crush is on a civilian, as opposed to Adrien's, her feelings for him were constantly brought up, even when they shouldn't have been the focus of the episode (Truth). In the meantime, Adrien's own feelings for someone who is not Kagami were completely dropped after Frozer or, perhaps, Oni-Chan.

But with season 4, that situation is, say, compensated?

Obviously, Marinette and Luka ended on good terms while Kagami broke up with Adrien unsure if she even wanted to remain friends with him. And even if she seemed to have moved on from him in Mr Pigeon 42, unlike Luka, she is still unwilling to see him again and patch things up.

And, unless they worked things out in an episode yet to be released, it seems they're still not on speaking terms.

This situation is somehow mirrored in Crocoduel. Even if they broke things off mutually and with no hard feelings, Marinette's fears and her problem with confrontation got in the way of their friendship. But in the end they talked things out and reaffirmed their friendship.

Ultimately, both love rivals have given up on their pursuit.

The difference between Luka and Kagami, however, is that Kagami moving on from Adrien comes from a place of hurt and from thinking he's better off with Marinette. And even if she's right, she's still in the dark. She doesn't know their secret, she doesn't know Adrien constantly blew her off because of his duties as Chat Noir, to a degree, she is still being fed lies.

Whereas Luka, moreso after Wishmaker, chose to go on with his life from a place of understanding. That is not to say he wasn't hurt, he was, but as he said, not seeing Marinette is worse than seeing her, because they're still good friends. And now he finally knows why they didn't work out! Marinette is Ladybug and Adrien is Chat Noir. Their duties were bound to get in the way, they couldn't have possibly worked together. But most importantly, the two have what they've both been looking for right in front of them. They just have yet to realise it.

Luka's able to move on because he now knows the truth.

Interestingly, the way they show us they're moving on is also a stark contrast between the two.

Kagami, in her typical fashion, truthfully pointed out to Marinette that she could never be with Adrien again, because she (Marinette) is the one meant for him.

Luka is shown to move on by being untrue to himself; he, the personification of honesty, lied to Marinette to assure her her secret was safe.

Parallels and imbalances, everyone.

I keep seeing people saying Kagami was a queen for ending things with Adrien the way she did while Luka needs more self-respect.

Could we please stop with that?

Kagami and Luka are foils and vastly different characters. They both ended things in the way that best fit their character.

Luka was never going to break up like Kagami would, and Kagami was never going to break up the way Luka would.

And each one's way of breaking up is still perfectly valid.

Kagami is a queen for ending things when she thought she wasn't getting what she deserved, and Luka is an angel for being so understanding even in such sad circumstances.

Both are valid and well-rounded characters.

The end.

I'm starting to feel the presence of the kwamis during the end cards is symbolic of Marinette's new role as the guardian.

If you think about it, any episode where Marinette's new role played an important part of the plot included the kwamis at the end card.

Truth featured the kwamis not only as an explanation to Marinette's new responsibilities and how her Miracle Box works, but also because said responsibilities were a key factor to her breakup with Luka.

The only reason Lukanette broke up is because Marinette couldn't be completely honest with Luka, which resulted in him being akumatised because to him trust and honesty are everything. Luka wasn't even upset at the idea of Marinette not having moved on from Adrien. It wasn't until she told him outright she couldn't be honest with him that his heart finally broke.

Marinette's role as Ladybug, as the guardian of the miraculous, and Shadow Moth's constant meddling are what got in the way of their relationship. The heavy burden Marinette's carrying on her shoulders is getting in the way of her life.

Then we have today's episode: Gang of Secrets.

As you can see above, the kwamis are featured again in the end card. And that is because Marinette's life has become so stressful she's constantly lying and hiding her true self from her loved ones.

The cinema scene hit far too close from home to Marinette's liking. She said it herself: you fall for someone, but you're unable to tell him how you feel. So you wait and try, and try, and try until the opportunity slips through your fingers. And before you know it the boy you love is unapproachable and has a girlfriend himself. Of course, you're heartbroken, but then you fall for a new guy and everything's perfect. In fact, it's too good to be true. Lo and behold, you have secrets you can't tell anybody about, but your boyfriend hates secrets, but since you can't be honest with him, the only choice you have is to break up with him.

That film was a summary of her own love life and, moreover, of what her life was turning into.

Again, she said it herself: superhero movies are better.

Which is exactly the direction Marinette wanted to take her life to!

In the very beginning she was already obsessed with fighting Shadow Moth. Her only concern was stopping his newest akuma. And after talking to Tikki and seeing nobody could really relate to her, she made up her mind. Her double life's too complicated? Fine, she'll choose which life to live from now on. And she chose Ladybug.

It's actually a good thing the girls arrived when they did, otherwise who knows what Marinette could have done.

Luckily, this episode actually ended on a hopeful note. With Marinette finally finding someone she can vent to and be fully honest with.

Then, there's Monster Fu.

Marinette seemed to have a better control over her situation. Chronologically speaking, there are another two episodes before this one showing Marinette's development as the guardian and how she's dealing with it.

Again, this episode revolved around Marinette's new duties. This time she had to convince Su-Han that she is a capable guardian and that Master Fu's decision wasn't misguided, all the while she learned more about her role and the powers that come with it.

As you can see, the kwamis appear once again in the end card.

Do you want to know in which end card they DON'T appear?

In Lies:

Which makes sense once you remember this was an Adrien-centric episode. For once, Marinette was actually a minor character until they had to face off against Lies. Furthermore, the only time the kwamis appear is for a minute or two at the beginning, when they were fooling around Marinette's room.

This episode was all about Adrien and Kagami. And thus, there are no new responsibilities that need to be explored, because Chat Noir doesn't have the same responsibilities as Ladybug. Sure, we saw how packed his schedule truly is, but we all suspected it already because it had been mentioned countless times since Bubbler. In other words, there's nothing new.

While it should be noted that, just like Lukanette, Adrigami broke up due to secrets that couldn't be shared, we have to keep in mind that the difference between the two is that this is actually an exploration of how Adrien's relationships would turn out with him constantly having to take a rain check because of responsibilities he already has. While Truth was about exploring Marinette's relationship with the EXTRA BURDEN of being the guardian.

Summing up, if the kwamis play any sort of significant role, the chances of the episode focusing on Marinette as the guardian of the miraculous are pretty high.

Another parallel between Luka and Kagami comes from the true reasons why their relationships with Marinette and Adrien, respectively; didn't work out in the end.

As @kisilinramblings pointed out, both Kagami and Luka have trust issues, though Luka still relied on others whereas Kagami gave up on everyone. But while Luka still has a strong support network even without Marinette, Kagami is alone.

This aspect of their characters is reflected on the reason why they had to break up with Adrien and Marinette. Luka was hurt because he felt Marinette didn't trust him. Whereas Kagami broke up with Adrien because she couldn't fully trust him.

This is something that most likely stems from their respective upbringings.

Since Luka grew up in an... Unconventional family, he probably grew used to always being there for each other. For him, teamwork, communication and mutual trust are everything. Which is why he probably shoulders its lack thereof by himself. He probably fears there is a problem with him if Marinette can't be fully open with him. Keep in mind how he immediately tried to assure her that he wouldn't be jealous if she still loved Adrien.

Kagami, par contrast, despite her mother's monitoring and smothering, has been raised to depend on no one but herself. To her, her sense of self-preservation always comes first. So when Adrien showed signs of not being fully trustworthy, she chose to close herself off in order to prevent any further pain.

Luka was looking for someone who would depend on him, while Kagami was looking for the one person she could depend on.

In all fairness, the reason Adrien's feelings for Ladybug weren't even a factor in Kagami's akumatisation in Lies is because, unlike Marinette's crush on him, nobody knows the girl he's in love with is Ladybug. Not even Kagami knows about it, she just assumed it was Marinette.

Is it completely fair it didn't play an important role in the Adrigami break up when Marinette's crush on him was constantly brought up in Truth despite ultimately being her responsibilities what got in the way? Not really. But it does make sense; you can't bring up something you don't know about.
