Every human guy’s dream woman. Remember that a key part of toon psychology is that humor is intrinsic to their being. And Jessica here? Jessica Rabbit is smart and sexy, no doubt, but a toon doesn’t care about that. To a toon, she’s one thing only: not funny. She’ll never get the punchline, she’s “too pretty” for slapstick, and her low, smoky voice just doesn’t have the over-the-top hysteria that everyone expects from a toon. She’s not even a weird talknig animal, she’s essentially a human with visible outlines. Hell, to a toon, Lena Hyena is probably considered more of a catch.
That’s why whenever anyone comments on who’s the lucky one in that marriage, the answer switches depending on whether or not you ask a human or a toon. That’s why instead of making successful hit cartoons with her hubby, she’s stuck working at a nightclub full or rejects and washouts (like Betty Boop, a black and white toon who didn’t or couldn’t make the transition to color cartoons. Eddie Valiant clearly feels sorry for her, telling her “she’s still got it”), with her best shot at a decent living being to humor a manchild with deep pockets with private games of patty cake (decide for yourself if it’s more or less embarrassing that I’m not speaking euphemistically there). Ask a toon, and Roger Rabbit is slumming it. She doesn’t deserve him, according to conventional toon logic (which I am convinced isn’t actually a thing now that I say it).
But underneath all that, she’s not bad. People like to assume, sure, but despite being “toon ugly” she’s still loving, still caring, and still devoted to her “Honey Bunny” no matter what. And a big part of it is that Roger could see what everyone else, toon and human alike, was too shallow to notice.
And that’s why Roger and Jessica Rabbit are perfect for each other.
