I'm calling it now.

Seeing as Clarice and Lao Xi Sheng stayed in the Elven Kingdom while Emma went back to the Cosmic Realm and they still had their own Copernicus, they're going to use the Heart of the Forest to animate their creation, who in turn will end up being the current Copernicus because Merlin will send him to the past with the original Unicorn so he can create a stable time loop that'll ensure the reincarnation cycle is set in motion and Unicorn will be able to keep fighting the Evil throughout eternity.

Let's be real, the biggest shocker for me was finding out after a full season of Emma's hair being so fluffy and perfectly coiffed that it is actually pretty much Melinda's but blond, instead of her appearance simply being altered by Melinda.

Love: Then and Now

Maybe I'm reading too much into things, but I can't help but feel Edred's memories in this episode have a purpose outside of introducing how he and Melinda met. If you ask me, it's a narrative choice meant to highlight the similarities and differences between Melinda and Edred's relationship, and Emmelyn and Edred's.

A Love's Last Light revealed Melinda's first meeting with Edred was anything but amicable. The sole fact that it's clear neither expected they would end up falling deeply in love is proof enough of that. It also has some key similarities and differences with their reunion this reincarnation, or more accurately, when Emmelyn first met Edred.

Both times they were indirectly brought together by the Evil's direct actions. Melinda and Edred met because it was terrorising the Elves' forest, whereas Emmelyn and Edred met because it awoke Copernicus ahead of time and he initiated the awakening, meaning he had to bring the Warriors together once more.

And in both cases, their relationship began on the rocky path, especially on Melinda and Emmelyn's side.

Melinda was adamant Edred didn't involve himself in her and her father's battle, seeing him as a hindrance and an outsider...

...while in Emmelyn's case she refused him because she didn't recognise him, or herself, or her own role in their mission.

Which in itself it's an ironic development; the most involved member of the group turned into the member who knew the least about their cause.

But just like these meetings are parallel of each other, they're also opposite circumstances.

In their original life, within a few hours and interactions of knowing each other, Edred was already perfectly capable of seeing through Melinda and tug at her heartstrings by unknowingly reaching out to her in ways even she didn't know she needed.

All it took was for Melinda to vehemently insist Edred would be putting himself in danger if he chose to fight the Evil for him to a) realise something clearly bad and related to it must have happened to Melinda for her to be so aggressive and dedicated to the cause, and b) begin to shatter her walls with the promise of battling together, as a team.

In their first lives, Edred was surely the person who best understood Melinda and her feelings.

His grief from this episode doesn't come from mere jealousy, but from the knowledge that upon this awakening he cannot longer do that. He no longer is the person who best knows Melinda and whom she's closest to.

Ever since Emmelyn came to be, Edred has time and time again failed to read through her emotions, to shatter the walls she's put up around herself to keep him out, failed to see what was troubling her and help her move past it.

He sees her being more at ease with Winston after a few hours than she's been with him in days, and it kills him inside.

Edred's been miserable this episode not because Emmelyn is closer to Winston, but because she is not Melinda and he feels as if he has lost her forever.

These episodes flashbacks weren't just there to shed some light into their shared past, but to highlight what once was and no longer is.
