I need people to explain why they hate Puppeteer 2 so much because it's honestly my comfort episode (Is there something wrong with me or??)

Well, the biggest issue most people seem to have is that it can get extremely cringey and uncomfortable to watch.

There's also a bit of salt involved for some people, but yeah, definitely the cringe part.

I'm honestly surprised I managed to watch the whole thing when it aired, because I'm an easily embarrassed person and I literally suffer when there's second-hand embarrassment scenes playing out in front of me. I kid you not, I've literally locked myself in the bathroom for about 5-10 minutes just to be completely sure a particularly cringey scene was over.

Things like the statue scene can get painful to watch.

None of y’all are actually understanding The Puppeteer 2 (spoilers ahead)

Okay, so it’s been a LONG time since I’ve written any meta on this show. Mostly because a lot of episodes are now focused on things I don’t care so much about, BUT I was rather inspired by Puppeteer 2, especially since SO MANY PEOPLE seem to be missing the entire point of the episode.

Now, I’m not giving the writers of the show a ton of credit–they have their good and bad moments. But given the obvious budget of this episode as well as the sheer amount of dialogue, I think it’s pretty fair to assume at least some thought was put into this episode.

So, first and foremost, there were a few points made during this episode.

Let’s start with the Wax Museum and why it’s so pertinent to this episode. The Wax Museum is made entirely up of celebrities. Though we have encountered Adrien and his status before, this is one of the most direct ways they could have drawn attention to it. There is a clear line in this episode–Adrien is a celebrity, his friends are not. Yes, the akumas had wax statues, but the victims and their akumas are not the same people, so to say.

So here we have an “honor” that is only ever granted to celebrities (wax figures) and we have Adrien coming in to work on his. But before that, we have a constant back and forth in the car as to why Marinette is even there–is she Adrien’s friend? His lover? Just a fan of wax statues? This is important because it is less a reflection of Adrien and Marinette’s characters as it is Marinette’s own, let’s say, psychological confusion over how she views Adrien. We’ve seen here make stupid, flustered claims about Adrien before, and these conversations are forcing her to face that head on, even if Adrien remains oblivious as always.

During the conversation up to the top of the building, we are faced with more of this confusion. Namely, Adrien’s interpretation of his relationship with Marinette versus her own. Granted, Nino brings to light a lot of the problems, but he is less the cause so much as the vehicle with which Marinette’s own inability to be honest is being portrayed. Her behavior causes confusion, even if Adrien is unable to fully grasp that (which is all the more part of the problem). Alya, Nino, and Adrien are ALL responding to the issue of Marinette’s feelings in different ways, because THEY are confused as to what she actually wants and what they’re meant to be doing. Marinette says one thing and then backs out a moment later. As someone who recently went through something similar, my initial indecisiveness to admit my feelings to the person I liked caused a lot of back and forth confusion for the people I had told. Marinette’s situation has spiraled FAR beyond that, which is all the more reason we’re getting these vastly different interpretations as far as how her friends are meant to be reacting. The POINT is that her indecisiveness and timidity is confusing and this is becoming a problem.

The other thing that I think is interesting in the following scene–which will lead me back around to my main point–is the fact that despite having come with Adrien to support him because the wax stuff is going to be long and boring, all his friends abandon him when he’s literally trapped in the vice of “celebrity.” Granted, Nino and Alya leaving is a bit of a device to move the plot forward, but Marinette also leaving kind of wraps the whole thing up in a neat bow. She’s supposed to confess and ultimately can’t. And instead of staying with Adrien as a good friend should despite her inability, she leaves as a flustered mess.

Adrien is now alone, his hand clamped in a wax trap. In a lot of ways, this is extremely symbolic of his status as a celebrity and his friends not being a part of that. That Marinette left as a flustered mess only makes this worse, especially since she left him in a manner that is very similar to how a flustered fan might react if they become overwelmed.

This is important because we’re now seeing a very clear implication that though she desires to know Adrien and has done many things to be a good friend to him, Marinette is still haunted by this “idea” of Adrien that she has that isn’t at all factual. And while I don’t think it’s celebrity worship, as some would argue, I do think that the metaphor of celebrity worship in this episode is a very good use of Adrien’s character. We are seeing that Marinette interprets Adrien in a light that is not entirely realistic, which doesn’t help anyone.

This metaphor is only further expanded after her discussion with Tikki. While Tikki’s advice might seem helpful, what it really does is further support the notion that Marinette’s entire infatuation with Adrien is shadowed by false idealizations. She creates a persona to act as in order to communicate with him. She is literally creating a role for herself that she thinks will allow her to exist in Adrien’s, I guess, “proximity” so as to allow her to “get what she wants,” so to speak. She’s acting–as in, she’s lying. Just as much to herself, I think, as she is Adrien.

And this whole thing is only made worse by Adrien’s “prank.” He symbolically becomes nothing more than a wax statue during the entire time that Marinette is playing her “role.” She even goes on a tangent about all the great characteristics he has as a statue, highlighting a lot of shallow aspects of why she’s attracted to him. Granted, I think there’s more to it than that (her feelings, I mean), but she’s so confused by the “more” that it’s hardly relevant if she can’t voice her feelings in the first place, beyond how “perfect” she thinks he is.

Now, this is the “cringe” part of the episode that everyone is complaining about. But to be honest, I really didn’t think it was that bad. It clearly shows Marinette’s idealization of Adrien, as well as the “form” Adrien has within that idealization. That she said all the silly things she did (again, playing her role) and kissed him, while embarrassing, is wholly within her character. Given her tendency to fantasize on extreme levels, I think I’d be more surprised if she didn’t try to kiss Adrien’s wax statue. I get people are annoyed with Marinette constantly being the cause of bad things, or the butt of jokes, etc, but I don’t think that this situation is wholly unfounded given her personality. It was very in character for her to act that way, and I think it made a rather valid point about her feelings for Adrien. After all, she and Adrien may be “friends,” but they’re clearly not close enough for him to feel certain about what she really thinks of him, so she can’t be that close to him, which means there is a bit of shallowness on her side as far as her feelings, even is she would prefer it be different.

Now, another complaint people have been voicing about the episode is “why can’t Marrinette have a tastefully handled confession like Chat?” And while a lot of you didn’t seem to realize this, the episode actually addresses that.

When Chat Noir flirts with Ladybug, she actually stops fighting to ask him how he so easily is able to express his feelings, because she has such a hard time doing the same thing. He responds with some line about how the people you care about should know how you feel, but the whole point of that episode was to illustrate the differences between Adrien and Marinette, and kind of explain why Marinette’s confession is so long in coming while Chat Noir has confessed, like, two or three times now.

For better or worse, Marinette’s inability to be honest about her feelings for Adrien is a huge conflict surrounding her character and has been from the beginning. Much bigger than Chat’s conflict over his feelings for Ladybug, which tend to be addressed in a more, let’s say, lighthearted manner than Marinette’s feelings for Adrien. Adrien is a very forthcoming person. He likes to think the best in people and is very honest about how he feels with almost anyone. And while I think he should probably re-evaluate the behavior he thinks is acceptable from other people, he mostly deals with any kind of conflict straight out. He doesn’t sit and stew like Marinette does, he doesn’t even waste time thinking about Chloe and Lila. Adrien would much rather think about the good than the bad. In fact, he would much rather ignore the bad (which is probably why he tried confessing so many times–likely hoping for a different outcome. Optimists, amiright?)

Marinette is NOTHING like this. She will sit and stew and plan and make herself anxious and scared and angry over things that would slide off Adrien’s back like water slides off ducks (thank you, Crowley). Marinette confessing is a much bigger roadblock because of this difference in their personalities. And it’s also why she gets all sweet on Chat for his reasoning behind why he can express his feelings so easily, because he makes it sound so simple, which is exactly what Marinette needs. Not overly complicated plans (Nino and Alya) or anything like that. She needs to be able to push back on her anxiety, walk up to Adrien, and just say it (much like how she kissed his cheek in the finale of the last season). No attempts made by her to confess will EVER succeed so long as there is any kind of convoluted plan surrounding it.

The writers were literally giving the viewers a direct comparison between Adrien and Marinette as far as how they deal with their feelings and y’all missed it because you were too busy being mad. While Adrien overly simplifies situations–which can be both good and bad–Marinette is more likely to overly complicate things–which is also both good and bad. Where Adrien might fail to see how complex a situation is, Marinette will, whereas Adrien is able to make things simpler where Marinette cannot. You even see it in their fighting styles. Adrien ALWAYS goes for the obvious physical attack, while Marinette is the one to strategize. IT HAS BEEN A LITERAL PART OF THEIR PERSONALITIES FROM THE BEGINNING AND YOU ALL MISSED IT!

The point of this episode was to illustrate Marinette’s issues with her feelings for Adrien, as well as draw comparisons between them so as to better understand why Marinette’s attempts to confess ALWAYS FAIL!

Until Marinette can pull back enough to see Adrien less as a terrifying mountain to climb and more like a simple set of stairs, she will not be able to reach him.

And that is the tea.

hold on-

remember in loveater, in the alternate timeline, where adrien finds marinette after realizing she’s ladybug?

then he says this,

i’ve realized that you’re not just a friend to me. i’ve always felt like you were more than that.

yes, this timeline is eventually reset, but i’m still wondering if that confession revealed anything about adrien. is “more than that” a reference to him acknowledging there was more to marinette than he could know (being ladybug). we’ve had multiple moments of him suspecting her role as ladybug, here his suspicions are confirmed

OR is “more than that” a reference to him actually having previous feelings for her, before her knew this information, and that it only was made clearer after finding out she actually is the same girl he has liked (ladybug)? this one is supported more by fan speculation than canon. we don’t actually know how or if he likes her in that way (unless you count the “just a friend” lines as denial????)

of course, the grey area, it could just be a mix of both. but the latter idea is interesting to me (plus a win for adrienette stans everywhere if true)... do yall know what i mean 😭 anyways, i be thinkin

I know Stormy Weather 2 get scrapped quicly by the fandom due to its clip-show nature (and bc it was broadcasted way too earlier than intended) but there were still new informations for us to take in as we get a reminder of where each character come from and if they have changed or not. And one of it was when Adrien is lead to talk about Marinette.

When comparing Marinette’s writing to the Valentine card he got, while he think he recognized her handwriting, he mentions it can’t be the case because Marinette got Luka as a love interest. And let’s not forget that Marinette’s message accompanying the parcel deliveryput emphasis on the friend part (Nathalie’s deadass line delivery not helping either). These element lead Adrien to conclude the sender the anonymous Valentine card -- to which he is extremely attached to as he had keeping it -- cannot be Marinette, that is from someone else with similar handwriting. I can’t find the proper English word here to describe his tone as he said that one last line, but there is something in it. Like a crushed hope.

And in the Puppeteer 2 car scene, we are hinted Adrien’s love for LB  is holding him back, that he has yet moved on from his unrequited love. Since he mentions LB only as “the girl he loves”, all Marinette understands is he is referring to another girl than her. Marinette cannot possibly know he is referring to LB like the viewer.

So all that to say that the second option is more possible. Especially since in the Chat Blanc timeline, two in a half elements are lifted for them to be an actual couple.

  1. Marinette’s love for Adrien symbolized by the beret she has gifted him. The sew heart was important for Adrien to realize Marinette does indeed love him more than a friend.
  2. Adrien doesn’t have to choose between Marinette and LB bc he has realized they are the same person. And well, since Marinette heavily hinted her feelings for him, he understood who was the boy LB mentionned to love.

Remember, in Puppeteer 2, Adrien said Marinette is a very important person for him and he is ready to do anything for her (as illustrated by the end of the Ladybug episode where he sacrifices a bit of himself for Marinette’s hapiness and safety).

So Adrien has developped feelings for both Marinette AND Kagami. But unlike Marinette, Kagami has been straightforward about her romantic feelings for him. And since Adrien has now realized his love for LB is indeed unrequited and there is no more hope for him to think she will eventually fall in love for him, he finally decides to move on and go after something more certain. Kagami loves him, so it eases a lot of stuff and he has taken a romantical interest to Kagami as well. However, he is still undecisive about this as his discussion with Kagami at the beginning of Miracle Queen informs us.

Adrien : No! I mean, yes! I mean... it’s the first time that I... I thought it would be different...

Kagami : So you are not happy?

Adrien : Yes, I am! It’s just that... I think I wasn’t really ready...

Kagami : When will you be ready?

Adrien : ....

Kagami : Your undecision is hurftul, Adrien.

He wants to move on and Kagami is there ready for him but he himself isn’t 100% ready to set in a romantic relationship with Kagami even though he likes her. In the end, he does seem to make the move, but remember the final scene is shot from Marinette’s perspective, so this undecisiveness Adrien has demonstrated at the start of the Miracle Queen, might ressurfaced for the next season.

After the new spoiler I think I like luka better than Adrian I’m tired of all the excuses Marinette needs to consider other guys Adrian can’t make up his mind and he doesn’t like her like that just yet. Chat noir and Adrian need to view Marinette as a love interest passed just a friend

This was actually asked before Puppeteer 2, but rn it works just the same.

We all know the Love Square is end game. We all know it and it's pointless to deny it, the best alternative is sheltering in fanon content.

I, myself, am a Love Square shipper and it's meant so much to me and for so long, I cannot imagine the show ending any other way. But on the other hand, I'm also a Lukanette shipper because with Luka Marinette's feelings are valid, taken into consideration and she doesn't have to make a fool of herself around him whenever she wants to express how she feels.

Puppeteer 2 and Backwarder proved that, nowadays, that just doesn't happen with Adrien. And honestly, it's so unfair! It's unfair, not only because they made Marinette look like a total creep and a klutz, but because the writers are using her feelings as comical relief!

I said this in a previous post, by the time Marinette finally gets the chance to confess it'd better be so good that a picture of the scene appears in the dictionary's definition of "good", because, otherwise, there'll be Hell to pay.

This show's problem is that it won't allow Marinette to finally make the move and properly confess. Which, honestly? It's bullshit. Because if the show's giving signs of anything, that is that they're slowly killing the Love Square to bring to life Adrigami and Lukanette for, like, a season, maybe two. My question is; why don't you just do it instead of beating around the bush?!

I'm serious! In the few appereances Kagami and Luka have made this season, they've already made great progress with their respective crushes: Kagami's got to spend some alone time with Adrien in Backwarder and Animaestro, as well as unknowingly confessing her feelings for Adrien. And Luka confessed to Marinette while akumatised and as himself, gaining himself a special place in her heart.

What has Adrienette gotten so far? To further establish each other as friends and Adrien considering for a nanosecond the Valentine he received was from Marinette. Aside from little moments that give the fandom hope, only to shatter it with episodes like Puppeteer 2. That's it.

If at the end of Puppeteer 2 Tikki had let Marinette move on from Adrien, she would've slowly but surely been happier. Because if we add to all this Marinette's future love sacrifice in Loveater, it doesn't take a genius to figure out she's just gonna let Adrien go with Kagami with the excuse of having something important to do instead of actually telling him the truth about her feelings. And I'm tired.

Marinette never gets the luxury to, at least, know her love is known and taken into consideration; Adrien/Chat Noir does. Marinette is seen by many as stalkerish and someone who isn't actually in love with Adrien, when in truth, she's the one with the most mature approach of her crush of the two: she 1) admitted if it weren't for Adrien, she'd give Chat a chance; and 2) is always willing to let Adrien go as long as he, himself, shows to be genuinely interested in someone else.

And before anyone comes and tells me about Adrien's lack of knowledge on socialising, we're talking about being in love: something none seems to have experienced before according to canon.

Again, I'm tired. Really, I am. We all know the Love Square is endgame, but please, at least allow them to experience happiness and growth through other meaningful relationships at last! They really don't deserve all this shit.

im sorry i hate this episode, i really don’t see why it had to be that embarrassing, i don’t understand why her feelings are always the joke of the episode.  maybe is too personal of me, but yall don’t know how horrible it feels to be embarrassed over and over again just bc you have a crush. it’s not funny, it hurts like hell, you feel pathetic just bc you like someone. and im so tired that this is the only treatment marinette ever gets.

why can adrien have his romantic moment and confess? why can’t marinette have that and get a decent rejection? isn’t she supposed to be our main character? why are her feelings treated like dust?

It would’ve been So Easy if instead of going into Cringe Mode, Marinette saw this “statue” as an opportunity to practice her confession. She thinks evenly about all the things she wants to say, all the reasons she likes him, all the feelings she’s been holding back and lays it out in front of the “statue” because she can calm down. She’s not going to get rejected by a statue, you know?

And Adrien, stuck in this moment of “well this didn’t go according to plan” has to stand there and listen to Marinette’s feelings without outwardly reacting to it (y’know, the same way Marinette had to when Chat told her how serious his feelings were?) and it finally penetrates his thick, thick skull, that not only does Marinette like him, she’s in love with him.

And then Marinette gets to walk away, none the wiser, not being shamed for expressing herself.

Then he and Marinette would be on equal footing - both are aware of the other person’s feelings for them. They both have to navigate their relationship with the knowledge that they hold the heart of someone they consider a very close and irreplaceable friend.

And yes I consider it equal because Adrien has all but rejected Marinette so she’s not fooling herself just like Chat was actually rejected imo

This way, Adrien is aware but he’s not forced to act on it (because we all know the only reason Marinette really hasn’t confessed is because he’d turn her down and end the Love Square Intrigue). He can’t come up with a dumb excuse as to why Marinette maybe doesn’t like him that way - he’d have to actually deal with her feelings.

You know, get this Love Square moving!

TL:DR - There was literally no reason for that to happen that way except that the writers hate Marinette and possibly all of us too.

Just a heads up

Even if the Ikari Gozen spoiler gave me hope Marinette and Kagami will finally get along, if they have a "let's talk about our respective feelings for Adrien" moment and Kagami's advice to Marinette is to stop hesitating about confessing her feelings, I am going to fucking riot.

Not because it's not good advice. But because she's taken it before and it's only led her to make a fool of herself every single time she's made a move. The only exception being the kiss in Mayura. Period.

Marinette's problem is not that she's hesitant, is that the writers refuse to let her take that step, while Chat Noir gets to reveal his feelings, and even get mad if they're not mutual. Marinette doesn't have that luxury.

I don't know what the writers have planned for Marinette's confession, but it'd better be flawless by the time it happens, because this is just unfair to her.

Do you think the other sequel episodes (Gamer, Puppeteer, Reflekdoll(?)) will be a clip-show episode like Stormy was?

I'm not sure... I think it all depends on the episode. Allow me to explain:

Puppeteer: This is one episode I actually think there could be flashbacks. The description was WAY too vague to theorise anything else. But, on the other hand, thanks to my inner fangirl dying to know more, I know Chris (Nino's brother) is supposed to be a friend of Manon's, and given she didn't appear in Chris Master, their friendship should be explored on this episode. Though, that's just me talking.

Gamer 2.0: This is the only other episode where I actually think there will be flashbacks. I mean, the name literally follows the same structure as Stormy Weather 2, except for saying 2.0 instead of a mere 2. So, maybe?

Reflekdoll: Now this one I honestly don't think so. As I've shared several times before, I believe Viperion will debut in this episode, due to Juleka being the bad guy and all, therefore, it wouldn't make sense to rob the spotlight from a new hero and give it to some flashbacks! Maybe some from Captain Hardrock and Frozer will appear to help Marinette in her decision of giving Luka the miraculous, but then again, it's not likely.

Sorry it took so long, anon! I have no excuse other than not feeling inspired. But thank you for asking, nonetheless :)
