The announcement is likely to intensify a clash between Poland and the European Union over LGBT rights, which the EU says must be respected in all member states, but which Poland calls a threat to its Roman Catholic culture and a purely domestic issue.

The Polish government announced its plan for the adoption ban hours before lawmakers in the European parliament adopted a major gay rights resolution that was seen as a direct rebuke to Warsaw’s recent policies.

Poland already allows only opposite sex couples or single people to adopt children. The change announced on Thursday would require the authorities to vet single people seeking to adopt, and bar them if they are cohabitating with someone of the same sex.

“We are preparing a change where (…) people living in cohabitation with a person of the same sex could not adopt a child, so a homosexual couple will not be able to adopt a child,” said Deputy Justice Minister Michal Wojcik.

Wojcik said the purpose of the measure was to protect children: “It’s about a child’s safety, about its wellbeing,” he said. LGBT rights activists said it would instead punish children by restricting adoptions.

“You really have to be a mean human being to deny children a home, whether that would be in a same-sex or heterosexual couple. Children deserve a home,” activist Bartosz Staszewski told Reuters.

Poland’s curbs on gay rights, which are being mimicked in nearby Hungary, are among several issues that have created friction between the EU and right wing governments in power in those two ex-communist member countries. Brussels also complains that Warsaw and Budapest have curtailed the independence of media, courts, NGOs and academics.

Over the past two years, more than 100 towns and areas in Poland have declared themselves “LGBT-free zones”. The EU has responded by threatening to withhold some European funds from such towns, which the Polish government has offered to replace.

The European Parliament’s resolution, adopted with 492 votes in favour versus 141 against, said: “LGBTIQ rights are human rights”. It declared all EU territory to be an “LGBTIQ Freedom Zone”, a clear rebuttal to the “LGBT-free” designation used in Poland.

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) says gay rights are a threat to the traditional lifestyle in one of the most Catholic countries in Europe. Its critics say it has turned to politics of bigotry to cling to power, particularly since an election last year, which PiS incumbent President Andrzej Duda narrowly won with an appeal to conservative voters that emphasised anti-gay messages.

Important addition: Maria Skłodowska-Curie was born during partitions, which means Poland didn’t exist, which means her insistence that she was Polish was a significant act of defiance against the occupation, which means that you should respect that instead of arguing that ‘well she had French citizenship’. She couldn’t have Polish citizenship despite being Polish, that’s kinda the point she was making by keeping her maiden name and naming a chemical element she discovered ‘Polonium’ .

For those wondering about the pronunciation, in Polish ł makes a "w" sound, w makes a "v" sound, "o" is always (unless it's written as ó) pronounced like the o in lot, and stress is on the penultimate syllable

While international media has been giving the situation in Poland very little attention, the image of woman waving a Rainbow Flag in the streets of Warsaw, has been widely shared on social media during last few days. And while we appreciate those who have shared it and put light on the ongoing protests in Poland, the caption that many have used alongside this image is greatly misleading. The situation in Poland is not getting better, it’s getting worst… please go through prepared slides and learn why.

26.10.20 - the fifth consecutive day of protests against Poland’s court’s near-total ban on abortion.

they follow a ruling by Poland’s Constitutional Court that abortions, even in cases of foetal defects, are illegal.

it means that abortion is now only valid in cases of rape or incest.

the fight is about the right to choose.

Avatar

today the polish constitutional tribunal will rule on our abortion laws and possibly outlaw abortion in case of serious danger to either the mother or the child's health. remember that having an abortion in another country will still be legal and organizations like aborcja bez granic (abortion without borders) are here to help.

to be more precise - what is now illegal is abortion in the case of foetal defects, which accounted for around 98% of (legal) abortions. the only cases where abortion is still technically legal is when the mother's health is at risk or if the pregnancy is a result of rape.

These pictures are what happened in poland following the arrest of Margot from anarcho queer collective @stopbzdurom (on ig) translated to “stop bullshit” for fighting homophobic and pro life propaganda in Poland.

For context: After the Re-Election of Andrzej Duda, from the conservative, corrupt, nationalist party PiS, who made his whole campaign about fighting LGBT “ideology” and dehumanising lgbt people in poland, things have quickly become worse than ever for us here. Its not unusual to see trucks with anti lgbt and pro life propaganda on them, calling gay people p*dophiles who want to adopt children to r*pe them. Me and my girlfriend stumbled into an anti gay protest like that in Kraków a month ago, one of polands most progressive cities. The protest was backed and protected by a police car and the protestors were holding a banner calling LGBT people pedophiles. Margots organisation was fighting these state backed initiatives by destroying public propaganda, organising lgbt dance events in places of white nationalist rallies and organising anti homophobic protests.

After Margots organisation destroyed pro life propaganda in Warsaw a few months back, she got arrested for the first time, taken from her house by undercover police men into an unregistered police car, without shoes or clothes. Nobody knew where she was for a few days and there was no information about her. She got found through a big social media action.

You may have seen the pictures of religious and significant statues in warsaw being clad with pride flags on social media, this was margots initiative. This is why she has been arrested again.

Margot is facing 2 months arrest in a polish men’s prison, which could mean death and hard physical abuse to her. All of that for hanging gay pride flags in public places. This is a textbook political arrest. Lawyers and politicians from leftist parties have been trying to help her, but the police wont let them reach her. The polish prime minister is on twitter saying she deserves this for “the profanation of national and religious symbols”.

Please spread this throughout social media and dont let it go unheard. Public outrage is the only way we can free her and fight polish governments political repression of anyone disagreeing with the current regime and real time descent into a dictatorship. Public outrage and bad press for poland is the only thing the government is afraid of.

If youre in Poland, join todays protest in Warsaw (plac Defilad) at 18:30 in solidarity with Margot.

follow and support her collectives page on instagram @stopbzdurom and follow @grupastonewall for updates on her situation and protests.

#freemargot

Margot’s collective has a legal fund you can donate to here  rest of the proceeds will go to their actions to stop homophobic propaganda and spreading pro-lgbt information in Poland

I'll add some things:

Firstly for the sake of truth: Margot is officially arrested for the 'fucked up the truck with homophobic slurs', but his only happened after the rainbow flags were hanged on monuments. This is political, as they were already arrested for the truck thing and let go a couple weeks ago.

Tw Police brutality, and tw sexual harrasment in the end of the post

Secondly, POLICE BRUTALITY. Margot was in KPH (Huge LGBT rights organisation) office when the news about arrest broke out; Social media was updated and soon people started showing up, an hour later there were quite some crowds, 3 police vans show up. 3 of them, to arrest one person. Margot gets out of the office, goes to the police, and they say 'yeah sorry we not gonna arrest you'. Here's the picture

So the crowd and Margot decide to walk to Krakowskie przedmieście, the part of the city where Kopernik and Christ sculptures are (both had rainbow flags put on them earlier by StopBzdurom, the Jesus one was a huge 'offensive!!!' for some people) When they all get there, crowd grow, the Jesus monuments looked like this

Margot gets arrested by plain clothes officers, (I think it was violent but I am not sure). The car with Margot is firstly surrounded by fellow protesters, then by policemen who are surrounded by protests. People sit in front of the car. Police starts to get violent, they straight up throw people out of the way. Pics like this are taken.

That blonde lady is MP, Magdalena Filiks (whole statement on her fb). She saw a girl being thrown on the streets, then policemen standing on her head and back. MP pushed them away and put the bag under her head. Imagine what would happen, if the person who reacted didn't have immunity. Or if no one reacted at all

Then police starts to arrest other people. There are recordings and statements of policeman saying 'yeah just pick random 3 people'. Finally the car gets out and goes. this happened Friday evening, and yesterday evening, 24h later, it was still unknown where Margot was taken. Even the lawyer, who Margot had constitutional right to, was denied this information.

Now back to the protests: words gets out that arrested people are taken to police department of Wilcza street and some others, crowd starts to grows there too. Police is taking a shit tone of people, over 40 total (huh, and last year in Białystok when some assholes threw bricks at pride parade they only managed 20-some) this all is still non violent, worst people do is shouting, sitting on the ground and waving some flags around. Policeman starts to arrest random people, including some foreign guy who stopped to see what's going on and some guy who was going home with groceries. Lewica's and couple of KO parliament members are there, they try to cover protests, ask police where they take them, etc. then they spend whole night looking for people, as police department across the city refuse to give out the information or lie. To the MP, who have right to do this type of things. Regular people asking about friends and family were treated worse. arrested people are denied in rights to lawyers. It's not until 24 hours later, when we finally know where everyone is, and first people are getting out. Policemen sexually abused someone while at the police department. Like, male officers lifting dresses and putting hands where they definitely shouldn't (Wanda Nowicka FB page, if someone doubts)

In summary: ACAB, or, in polish, CHWDP

Also, to make this post a little bit sweeter: yesterday, a Saturday, a couple thousands people were protesting this shit in Warsaw. Similar protests happened or are scheduled in many many cities, even abroad. We're doing our best here, but pls help us out, spread the word.

it's painful to see, how time after time, people from countries of former soviet union are asking for help and to spread the information about the injustice that's being done to us and the world just don't want to listen. as if it's not bad enough. it's just a couple of rigged elections, couple of new laws, nothing crazy. but i can see, clear as day, how people on the other side of the border becoming prisoners in their own home. how the governers, who are suppose to protect us and help our countries grow, take the last of our money and kick us to the curb. for 6 years, there's war going on in my country and for some fucking reason it's nowhere near its finish. i know it's impossible to care about everything, especially right now, when there's just bad thing on a bad thing and it doesn't seem to end, but i guess i'm just tired and hopeless as i'm sure most people are. i can't even comprehend a possibility of everything being good, it's not in the books for us. who knows what can help. but it would be fucking great for someone to finally step in and take us somewhere great, but, unfortunately, it's never that simple.

What happened yesterday in Warsaw? (7.08.20)

Yesterday, an attempt was made to arrest for 2 months an activist Margot (a non-binary person - from Stop Bzdurom) for damage to a van that preaches homophobic slogans (such as "homosexuals are pedophiles") and for damage to the health of the person from the foundation that finances these vans - (these vans often drive around Poland in police custody). When they came to get her, she was in the headquarters of KPH (Kampania Przeciw Homofobii - Campaign Against Homophobia). On the Internet, I read how they called to appear there and disturb the police. The police could not get to Margot thanks to people who came and other activists.

Eventually Margot went out to voluntarily surrender herself to the police, but was not arrested. The police left her...

Margot and the rest of them went to the Krakowskie Przedmieście district, where a rainbow flag was hung on the Nicolaus Copernicus monument again. Then Margot was raided in an unmarked police car. Even more people gathered in the square and sat around the car so that it could not leave. Police was agressive.

There were no warnings before the police started using force. It was brutal. The left-wing MPs were on the spot and tried how they could defend those who were treated worst.

(Jakub Kaminski - East News/ Przemysław Stefaniak)

Paweł H. Głogowski/REPORTER

Everything lasted many hours and about 50 people were detained/arrested.

The MP testifies that she heard the cops talking to each other to arrest 3 people at random.

„An escalation in police violence I haven't seen in a long time.

We were blocking the car with Margot. The police crashed the crowd. Then the car tried to drive away, but the crowd kept blocking it... Another person who threw himself on the car to stop the political police from taking the activist. This is our rainbow civil disobedience. I don't have a word for what happened. Tears come into my own eyes. There are many detainees at several commands and a huge team of attorneys who help. There are also MPs from the opposition.”

Attention!

A polish LGBTQ* and anti-fascist activist was brutally detained in Warsaw. The police are using preventative measures normally reserved for people accused of violent crimes.

We believe that this is a retribution for recent actions including hanging rainbow flags from public monuments. In the worst-case scenario Małgorzata is facing 7 years in prison.

We will do all we can to prevent this and have already organized a legal fund at https://www.firefund.net/stopbzdurom.

Help us spread the news!
