The “movie villains that are trying to fix real problems are supposed to vilify leftist politics” discourse is a great example of how oversimplified outrage always wins over thoughtful discussion on social media.
This argument (while yeah, we should look critically at who gets villainized by the mainstream) ignores contradicting examples, it attributes a lot more intentional malice to movie studios than they really have, and above all it blocks any honest, nuanced discussion of media representation. What it actually does is get people mad, get them to share the take, and keep them hooked to the platform. I don’t know how to fix it, but it’s making our lives worse.
