Ive noticed recently that my generation has... no concept of what the various economic classes actually are anymore. I talk to my friends and they genuinely say things like "at least i can afford a middle class lifestyle with this job because i dont need a roommate for my one bedroom apartment" and its like... oughh

You guys, middle class doesnt mean "a stable enough rented roof over your head," it means "a house you bought, a nice car or two, the ability to support a family, and take days off and vacations every year with income to spare for retirement savings and rainy days." If all you have is a rented apartment without a roommate and a used car, you're lower class. That's lower class.

And i cant help but wonder if this is why you get kids on tumblr lumping in doctors and actors into their "eat the rich" rhetoric: economic amnesia has blinded you to what the class divides actually are. The real middle class lifestyle has become so unattainable within a system that relies upon its existence that theyve convinced you that those who can still reach it are the elites while your extreme couponing to afford your groceries is the new normal.

"poor people are happier with less" and "money won't buy happiness" is literally classist propaganda. stop buying into it and start making molotov cocktails

“money won’t make you happy” well i’d be a lot happier if i knew a medical bill wouldn’t send me into financial ruin

LITERALLY some of you don’t fucking know what “disposable income is” like i cannot stress ENOUGH that someone who was able to get animal crossing on day 1 of launch or a ps5 preorder that is still only working minimum wage job and/or cannot pay their rent on a monthly basis is NOT your enemy bruv they are NOT “the rich” like PLEASE cement that in your head.

had to share @rykhafirehand ’s tags:

thank you for boiling off capitalist propaganda to get down to the essence of economics

i’d like to add: you are SUPPOSED TO HAVE DISPOSABLE INCOME.

you are supposed to have enough money for toys and games and vacations. that is what the citizens of a normal and healthy society should be buying without stressing out about if they’re gonna be able to afford to live the next day. you’re not just supposed to have ‘a little bit’ or ‘if you save up’ or ‘sometimes you can treat yourself’, you are supposed to have disposable income, and plenty of it.

Say it with me folks:

  • “Eat the rich” means 1%ers and billionaires
  • middle class is closer to poverty than being a multimillionaire
  • “The rich” does NOT include children of billionaires (come on we’re at least slightly better than the plagues of Egypt)
  • Upper middle class children SHOULD NOT feel guilt over having money
  • Being aware of privilege and using your privilege to help others IS NOT a guilt trip
  • Constantly feeling guilty helps no one
  • Billionaires, however, should feel guilty over hoarding wealth.
  • Upper middle class is NOT rich
  • Black Lives Matter
  • Trans rights are human rights

My uncle was one of the top surgeons in the country. He was upper middle class definitely. When he got cancer, his insurance didn’t cover all the treatments he would need and after 5 years he drained his savings on cancer treatments (while still working most of that time) and eventually died because he couldn’t afford the expensive treatments that might have saved him.

If you are upper middle class and you get sick, it will likely bankrupt your family. It’s fucked.

For all of the idiots in the notes ^

Honest to god - even if you make 6 figures a year? you're closer to poverty than true wealth. Check your shit and remember who your real allies and enemies are guys.

A 6 figure income is a lot right? That’s say: 223,000 dollars a year Which is 112 dollars an hour. Most people would consider that upper middle class. That’s enough money to have a nice house, go on fun vacations. That’s slight more than the average doctor makes.

223,000 dollars is what Jeff Bezo makes in a minute

the well-off and the rich are not the same.

There was a wonderful study done about 15 years ago I think, that shows that people cannot accurately identify their income bracket. Most people who own a home think they are upper middle class when in fact they are closer to the poverty line. Even people living well below poverty often identify as middle class. The wealth gap is even worse now. I wonder if anyone actually knows their financial standing.

i hate when rich people condescend with the whole ‘money can’t buy happiness’ argument like listen. just because buying your fourth car didn’t fill the void in your deluded disconnected-from-reality life doesn’t mean not having to worry about food/ bills/medicine wouldn’t greatly improve the mental health of literally everyone else on the planet

Pro-Capitalist’s defense of capitalism is just explaining how it works, and then when you say “yes I know, I just think it shouldn’t be like that” they explain it to you again but angrier this time

They say “It’s fair because the people who own capital earn all the rewards” and then you say “I dont think owning capital entitles you to all the profits” and then their brain short circuits

“He invested capital”

“Yes and then a thousand other people did work while he sat around and profited.”

“But… he invested capital….”

they literally CAN NOT FATHOM that I know how capitalism works and just oppose it on moral grounds

Don’t confuse my hatred of the hyperwealthy for jealousy over what they have. I don’t want a six figure sports car, or a 40 room mansion, or a gold leaf truffle wagyu steak dinner. I want redistribution of wealth that allows for infrastructural support of all citizens’ basic survival needs.

while i completely agree with this statement, i feel like there’s this disconnect between the common man’s desire to experience what life has to offer and the hyperwealthy’s desire to exploit the masses in order to hoard resources to the active detriment of others.

i want to experience driving a fancy sports car down a big open road, the top down and the wind blowing in my hair. i don’t want a garage of 20 sports cars that i never touch.

i want a nice, comfortable, tastefully decorated house that’s big enough for me, my family, my pets, my hobbies, and any friends i might want to invite over. i don’t want a megmansion with more space than i could ever possibly use, that i only own because i want my house to be bigger than someone else’s house.

i want to experience eating the best steak dinner that the culinary world can offer. i don’t want to eat gold, which has literally no flavor, just because i can.

i want to travel to different cities around the world, see beautiful places, experience different cultures, and meet interesting people. i don’t want to buy up swathes of land and push natives out so i can build my twelfth house in hawaii or greece or somewhere else i’ll barely ever visit.

i want to dress in nice, well-made clothes that represent my style and make me feel good about myself. i don’t want to carry a thirty thousand dollar handbag or rolex watch just because it costs thirty thousand dollars.

i want to be able to give my friends gifts, i want to be able to invest in causes that i believe in, i want to be able to buy myself things like books, art, electronics, theater tickets, and nice food without having to worry about how much it costs. i don’t want to buy elections or shoot myself into space.

the average person’s concept of luxury is so far removed from the hyperwealthy’s everyday life that the distance cannot even be measured in ways that we can comprehend.

so while of course it’s more important that we work towards everyone’s basic needs being met rather than achieving luxury for ourselves, you, an ordinary person, shouldn’t feel guilty just for wanting to experience exciting and comfortable things. life should not be unyielding drudgery.
