This is the first time he lays eyes on the “informant” he’d heard Weaver talk about earlier. This is the young woman he’d been so quick to get defensive on behalf of because she was being used as a pawn by both Weaver and Belfrey in an attempt to one-up each other in their own Hyperion Heights chess game. Rogers here is aware of what she’s done, what she’s been through, and she’s an unpredictable street kid. 

But she looks up at him and is so concerned, so remorseful, and it tugs at his every heartstring. He doesn’t understand why—hell, he had a tough life, too, and he’s seen runaways all his life. So why her? 

But he sits down and entertains the thought of getting to know her better, and one tiny comment from him has her giggling and smiling. One look at her and he can’t help smiling, himself. 

Side note: Interesting their bishops are on opposite sides of each other. Also semi-interesting that the original piece for a bishop was in the shape of an elephant, so she’s got his white elephant. Other previous pieces/translations of the piece include the “messenger” and “the fool/jester/madman”. Strangely, another version is the “hunter/officer/shooter/archer”. 

Now, that’s likely giving the writers WAY too much credit. I still find it interesting, though…
