me watching monsters inc as a kid: how did it take so long for anyone to figure out that human child laughter not only produced energy like screams, but was more effective, and that children aren’t actually dangerous at all?

me watching monsters inc now: monsters incorporated, a multi-billion dollar corporate giant, stood to make extra profits off a scream shortage because low supply with high demand makes it possible to charge a fortune for a necessary commodity and everyone has no choice but to pay the high prices because they can’t go without electricity. Therefore Monsters Inc, as well as any other major powers that may have existed at the start of the era of using scream energy, fabricated the idea that only screams could generate sustainable energy sources in order to create artificial scarcity, because laugh energy was far easier to obtain and far more efficient, and therefore stood to lower the value of energy due to surplus. They also fabricated the idea that human children were toxic, in order to a) make other monsters too afraid to go near them to do research and possibly discover the secret of laugh energy, and b) to make monsters so afraid of going near them that there is a shortage of scarers, making it harder for rival companies to rise up and create competition. Even in the monster world, capitalism is based on lies, greed and cruelty, and even monster companies have no qualms about using and abusing children to maximize profits.

yeah okay ill reblog that

Artificial scare-city if you will

So I have a friend that I knew since AoL. Literally since the 90s. There is no one on this entire earth I trust more. We stayed in contact more or less entirely via the internet for many years.

When we first met in person, after 20.years of knowing one another, it was still in public. We still had people who knew where we would be and with whom. We stayed in public.

And it has paid off in spades, we are closer than anyone I know. But that choice to meet safely and carefully? Don't regret it at all.

Yes, after a while that internet person becomes real to you and you should take the opportunity to meet and grow that relationship if you can!

But for the love of your own safety, still be safe and careful. Go to a con together! But get separate rooms. Meet at a coffee shop! But tell a friend where you will be and with whom. Go see a show! But have your own transportation.

"Be safe" doesn't mean stop engaging your joy and your friends. It means, "Be. Safe."

I actually meant to put this in my drafts so I could come up with a response more articulate than the incorrect buzzer sound that went through my head when I read this, but I guess I didn’t do that, so let me just say: both of these are bad.

This is not a competition. Both of these are bad.

It’s also baffling because this is the opposite of what we’re seeing from AI editing software geared towards professional writers, which is deliberately designed to “simplify complex words” for “greater legibility.” (Often with questionable results.)

Programs like Grammarly and PRA use their “integrative AI” to simplify everything down to the bare bones because it thinks words like “devoid” are too complicated for the average reader to understand.

It’s why so many of the newer books read kinda samey right now. Writers are being trained out of using complex language by AI to appeal to readers (supposedly), and kids and non native English speakers who are using “complex” language are being marked down for using AI when they’re not.

It’s a fucking nightmare.
