Curbside

Nickelodeon, 1999

Curbside, a pilot based on the Terrytoons characters, was a product of Jerry Beck’s campaign to make a new series starring Terrytoons characters for Nickelodeon, since Viacom owns most of the Terrytoons library. Thanks to rights issues, it took a lot of effort to allow for the characters to star in a Nicktoon, and by the time a pilot was ready to be made, Beck had already left the project. As such, Nickelodeon brought in a writing team with no prior experience with the characters. Apparently, it was considered enough of a disaster to kill any future Terrytoons projects, which Beck found out when he sought to create a Silly Sidney cartoon for the network’s Random! Cartoons program (the same one that gave us Adventure Time), only to be barred from using any Terrytoons characters; the cartoon was ultimately produced as Hornswiggle. Beck blamed the pilot’s failure on the crew, which he felt cared nothing about the characters, and only did the pilot for the money.
