Donald Crowson
I just posted something regarding Donald Crowson because I have only just discovered his story. The museum I assist at currently have a brilliant exhibition on at the moment which includes a small section on Crowson's journey, including his 'Navicator'. 'Hand-held radio direction finder with an earpiece. The earpiece plugs into a socket on the bottom of the handle. On the back of the main body are the other controls, including a frequency selector, volume control and switch for the lamp.'
Images and description courtesy of the National Maritime Museum. If you read my post from earlier you will see his story. You can also read his Wikipedia page or the page for the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race. There is also an article that The Guardian wrote in 2009 which you can view here.
I think the story is pretty sad but interesting nonetheless - I can't wait to share it with visitors to the museum. If anyone here is particularly interested in maritime history and art and happen to live near Southampton (UK) then I would recommend the new Ship to Shore exhibition at the SeaCity Museum and John Hansard Gallery. Lots of cool pieces to be seen!
