Fourth year at Palemtto Andrew is listening to Neil grumble about a sociology paper he needs to write for a humanities credit. The assignment itself doesn't sound too difficult, something about tradesmen and social life, but as Neil's only true love is exy (and allegedly Andrew, but thats under review), he's having fun making it seem like a bigger chore than it is.
"Ugh, whatever," Neil finally says. "I'll just do it about truck drivers. I've still got the interview notes somewhere."
Andrew grades a brow. "When the hell did you interview truck drivers?"
Neil pauses, looking at him in surprise. Then he grins. Andrew does his best not to find it sexy, because he's pretty sure that smile isn't a good thing. "You know, it's funny you ask—"
the kevneil arguing dynamic is deeply important to me theyre like 2 chihuahuas yapping at each other. like 2 flies buzzing at each other and then hitting the windows
Thinking about how badly Andrew must’ve wanted to be known. For someone to actually notice things about him and be curious and piece all these observations together. Like. The truth game was just as much about wanting to know things about Neil as him wanting Neil to know him. And even without the truth game being evoked, when he knows what answers Neil must be digging for, he gives in more often than not. I think about how when Neil started noticing Andrew’s odd memory, especially when Neil believed him not to be paying attention and when Neil started finally asking questions, and how quickly Andrew answered them, how he must’ve been thinking, finally.
How much he wanted to be known and by someone he knew by now he could trust. Someone he knew could understand him and the implications of things he’s told. Someone he could tell his own secrets and things he’s been keeping to himself. Everything he let other people assume or misunderstand about him. This little nobody runaway is paying attention, piecing it together, understanding in a way that no one has ever been willing to do, not even his own twin. And when Aaron and Nicky asks him when this happened or other variations of the questions Neil’s already solved himself, and Andrew tells them they should’ve figured them out himself.
The way Neil was the first person to take him at his word, especially about something that wasn’t violence. To look further into him and the things he says and does and actually try to understand him. Not just write him off as a violent psychopath who does things for his own pleasure. The way Andrew wanted him to see more of him and understand him. And I just. My mind is tangles. But I want to go on about this forever.

“I put him down because his pain was too much to bear. I’d rather keep the memory of him the way I knew than to let him bite someone else again.” Ichirou digs his thumb painfully against Stuart’s collarbone— a reprimand. “You should have put your sister down. It would have saved a lot of people from suffering.”

Except tonight, it seems. Kevin’s hand is firm at the base of Neil’s spine as he finds their table and guides them seamlessly through the crowd. They both hate these events, but at least Kevin is good at it - throwing thousand watt smiles in every direction, shaking hands, saying just the right thing.
Neil mostly keeps his mouth shut because that is literally in his contract, too.

Dear Andrew, You called me Pinocchio once—you weren’t wrong. I’ve never been anything, I don’t know how to be, not anymore. I miss feeling like I could be real, even if I barely remember it. It’s like a dream an hour after you wake up, vague and half-forgotten, just the impressions are left. I doubt you even know what I mean, you were always the most real person I’ve ever met. I don’t know if I’m going to write again. I don’t even know if you care, but I wanted to let you know, because I broke my promise but only literally. I left everything of me that was ever real in Palmetto.
tagging, uh, anyone who wants to do this? I don't even know who's still writing who hasn't been tagged already, have been living under a rock ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Neil is a horse boy, and Andrew doesn’t fuck with horse boys - even though he maybe used to be one (but we don’t talk about that).
ft. lots of limes, dicks waving about, horses, stargazing, lying liars who lie!
an Andreil fic for the lovely, the incomparable @fuzzballsheltiepants
what @justadreamfox doesn't say here but SHOULD is that this fic is absolute magic from start to finish. they have managed to capture Andrew's (and Neil's, and Kevin's) character in this very different AU with utter perfection, and with some of the loveliest prose you can imagine to boot.
if you like horses - or even if you don't - you will never get to read a fic that better encapsulates the way it is to be a horse person. the way the obsession lingers and lives under your skin, even when you think you're over it. we know our boys are obsessive (or obsessively in denial) in canon, and this shifts it over to the very real, and very weird, world of competitive jumping and it's glorious.
do yourself a favor and slip into this world. you don't have to like horses, or know anything about them, to appreciate the wonder that is this story

If you've been waiting to start this because you don't trust my ADHD ass to finish things, well, that's fair. But I did! Chapter 3 features more hijinks, more chaos, more magic, more cameras, more reveals, more social media bullshit, more twinyards, and more...plants?
Read it from the beginning here!
(reminder that this is best read with the creator's style on!)
