Question for people who have been patiently waiting for the next chapter in The Forging of the Wolf (I know, I know, it’s been like 7 months and I’m sorry!):

This chapter is a beast.  It’s intended to cover Aedion’s entire time in Rifthold, and it’s close to 10k words and not done yet.  I can split it in half, and post the first half kind of soonish (if I can get it properly edited perhaps by New Year’s?) or I can do one monster chapter that’ll probably be 15k+ words and will take me a bit longer.  The problem is that I don’t have a natural place to split it, so it will read a bit abrupt.  Thoughts?  Tagging @elidethewise, @wayfaringbibliophile but I’d love as many opinions as I can get

3 + 4 for The Forging of the Wolf ask meme please!

These are hard, because this fic is so massive and my favorite sections depend on my mood, honestly.  So, for today, have these paragraphs:

3: What’s your favorite line of narration?

Once out in the hall, he walked numbly to the room he and Aedion had made love in hours or days or a lifetime before.  He stood in the empty room feeling nothing in particular aside from a bone-deep weariness that he knew would not let him sleep.  After a minute he turned and found Aedion standing in the doorway, turquoise eyes burning.  Some distant part of him was surprised; he supposed he expected Aedion to stay with the others.  He moved to close the door and Aedion stepped past him to allow it.  The latch clicked with a sharp finality, and the fragile walls that had been holding him together shattered.

4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?  Not surprisingly, it’s one of Mikkal’s:

“I understand killing an individual for a reason,” he said slowly, meeting her eyes and seeing remembrance of how they met in their green depths.  “Protection, or revenge.  But in battle…you don’t even know who you’re killing, or why, really.  You could completely agree with each other but grew up in a different land or got recruited by a different officer, and now one of you is going to kill the other.  Like somehow your life is more important than theirs.  But what if it’s not?  What if they are actually the better man?”  Delaney opened her mouth to speak but he plowed on.  “You’ll never know, because you’ve trained to cut their throat or gut them or shoot an arrow through their eye on the order of someone else, and so you do it.  You get so lost in the battle fury that you don’t even hesitate, most of the time.  It’s like you don’t even control your own mind.  But you never know if you are on the right side or not.  You have to either trust that you are, or not care, and I can’t do either.”

is it okay if i state how aedion’s is the most infuriating character i have ever read? or is that too much of an unpopular opinion?

Avatar

That is definitely not an unpopular opinion, he did nothing to endear himself to the fandom in KoA. I’m starting to feel bad for him at this point. But not too much because he was a dick. Maybe he was a dick with reasons, but still.

Avatar

I love Aedion, I really do. But he was nothing but an asshat throughout KoA. I,,, get that he had his reasons. His anger was justified, imo, at the end of Empire of Storms, but I did not like how he treated Lys in KoA.

Though, I do understand that anger, and the reasonings behind it. Especially when he had to lie to his men, his friends, about Lysandra being Aelin and having to pretend that Aelin was right there when in fact she was being tortured.

But the ‘Ren can have her’ made me want to strangle him.

Aedion has always been one of my favorite characters and quite frankly I’m glad we got to see that side of him. Throughout the series I always thought he got downplayed. When he first shows up chaol comments in heir of fire that, “while Aelin seemed to crackle with anger, Aedion seemed to pulse with it.” So the whole series I waited and waited for that anger to come out. Because for all that he endured he has not snapped. Yes we saw his arrogance and his frustration but never his anger and I was kind of disappointed. However what we do see is him leading up to his breaking point. The first instance is when Rowan shows up. At this point Aedion has only been reunited for about 5 days. When he didn’t know Aelin was alive he blamed himself for her death but now it is shifting to blaming himself for all she has gone through, and he has thoughts of the blood oath. Now the blood oath may not seem significant but what that means is that he might begin to heal, he’s allowing himself to heal to have hope for the future. Until he finds out that Rowan took it. We see that flash of anger when he storms out. But his loyalty never shifts. He comes back and gives his apology. But again he doesn’t break. Then in empire of storms Fenrys is compared to Aedion with his arrogance and bold ways and in tower of dawn Hasar is compared to Aedion. So we have all these little pawns that make Aedion seem insignificant. If I were Aedion quite frankly I’d be on edge and more than a little pissed. But still that anger doesn’t come out…until we get to the end of EOS. Think about how this plays out in his head. His cousin died, but no now she is alive and maybe we can start over, but no again she just gave herself to Maeve and if she doesn’t die there then she will die forging the lock, but not only that you can’t mourn for her because the women who you are beginning to fall in love with is going to pretend to be Aelin, then you get to sleep with her and she will have your child but you are not allowed to raise him or acknowledge that he is your son, so overall you have your love and son just out of reach and you will pretend to be someone else the rest of your life and you will never get to be yourself again. So you have all this put that together and finally, finally he breaks and that anger releases like a flood. All that pent up anger is finally coming out. And I’m glad we get to see it. We see Aelins anger we see her heal in fact we have an entire book on it. But for some reason the second Aedion has his anger released we begin to resent him. Aelin anger makes her our favorite but Aedions anger makes us dislike him. How hypocritical of us. Both anger was misplaced but both were understandable and both healed with the person that the anger was directed at. So if you love Aelin for her anger then you can get you head out of your ass and put aside that Aedion is a man and you love Lysandra and realize that he is just as justified and deserves our love for the healing arc that Aedion parallels Aelin in.

Yesssss oh gosh yes. I love how you put this. It mirrors my own thoughts. I love angry emboldened characters and I love love Aedion.

@fenrysmoonmoon and @aelinsfireandrowansice bless you both, I was starting to feel bad that i still love Aedion as a character. I just HATE HIS ACTIONS AND DECISIONS SOMETIMES

Oh I really love this analysis @aelinsfireandrowansice! I couldn’t reconcile my love of Aedion with his deplorable actions in KoA but this meta definitely helped me to feel better about the whole thing, and less like SJM altered his whole character in the last book.

@fuzzballsheltiepants have you seen this post?

I haven’t, thank you @aelinsfireandrowansice, for defending my fave character.  The only thing that bothered me in KoA really was when he threw Lysandra out in the snow, as it was the only time he was ever cruel.  To me, he’s justified in being angry - I’ve defended his behavior in EoS over and over, because it’s natural, it’s real, and it feels so honest.  But he had never at any point in the series crossed the line into cruelty until then, and it seemed to go against how SJM had set him up.

But I will forever love Aedion, as he and Aelin truly are two sides of the same coin, both beautifully, gloriously, human in all their flaws.

   aedion 25 looks cool!

I’m glad you asked about this one, I was going to post a preview of it anyway as I’m hoping to get this up soon!  It’s from Forging of the Wolf, my seriously long prequel to Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas.

Anyway, here goes:

Aedion took a deep breath as the doors to the Great Hall swung open.  Lifting his chin, he strode in, trusting his men to maintain formation.  Judging by the synchronicity of their footsteps, they did.  Stopping before the dais, he bowed, holding the pose for just a second before raising his head to meet the King’s eyes.

The King steepled his fingers and made a show of looking the soldiers over.  His men were dressed in uniform, as clean and pressed as if brand new, but they still paled in comparison to the finery of the court.  There was a gleam of satisfaction in the King’s expression, and mocking pity in the eyes of the minor royalty and courtiers scattered around the hall.  Aedion swallowed down the sting.  They were soldiers, not courtiers; many pulled off the streets of Terrasen’s cities, and the rest from the farms scattered throughout.  Yet they had answered Orlon’s call years ago, and still fought straight-backed for the protection of their land.  Not one of the fine lords and ladies were fit to lick the boots of the lowest foot-soldier in the Bane, and he would make sure they knew that before he was done.

The Queen fanned herself, the gesture fussy and bored.  Next to her Prince Dorian sprawled in his seat, only the intensity of his stare belying the haughty grace of his pose.  A tall young man sat next to him, bolt upright in his seat and one hand resting on the pommel of his sword.  Aedion flashed him a grin that was more of a dare.  The man’s mouth tightened in response, but he released his weapon.  Just as well; somehow Aedion doubted bloodshed would win him any favors tonight.

“You will join me,” the King said, indicating the sole empty seat that was at the far end of the table.  A reminder of his place.  “Your men may mingle.”

I commissioned the amazing @rainbowd00dles to do this piece from my Throne of Glass prequel The Forging of the Wolf. Here’s Aedion Ashryver and my OC Cathal, that commander in the Bane.  I gave Anne next to nothing to work with re: what they look like, so I am blown away with how perfectly this captures the image I have in my head.

“The useless sentries in the watchtower are now all half in love with you,” he lied. “One said he wanted to marry you.”

A low snarl. He yielded a foot but held eye contact with her as he grinned. “But you know what I told them? I said that they didn’t stand a chance in hell. Because I am going to marry you,” he promised her. “One day. I am going to marry you. I’ll be generous and let you pick when, even if it’s ten years from now. Or twenty. But one day, you are going to be my wife.”

He shrugged. “Princess Lysandra Ashryver sounds nice, doesn’t it?”

do you think it’s possible for lysandra to forgive aedion after he was a piece of shit and told her to “go to hell, you lying bitch” or something like that??? (i dont have the book here with me)

Absolutely.

People say terrible things when they are angry.  And Aedion is justifiably angry.  He didn’t strike her, he didn’t pull up the things she’s ashamed about in her past (he didn’t call her a whore, for example), he called her a bitch, because he was furious.  Have you never called someone a name in anger?  If you have, did they forgive you?

She had lied to him after she had promised him honesty.  And remember the original plan Aelin and Lysandra cooked up had nothing to do with Maeve, it was to do with forging the lock and banishing Erawan.  She had agreed to help Aelin go to her death without ever telling Aedion or Rowan, without allowing them to say good-bye or to grieve.  She agreed to put Aedion in the absolutely appalling position of having to have children with Lysandra and being unable to acknowledge those children, having to pretend they were Rowan’s, without ever asking him

Don’t you think that’s far more unforgivable than Aedion calling her a bitch?  I do.  I think plotting someone’s life out like that, in such an intensely personal and emotional way, without ever consulting them and putting them in a position where they cannot refuse, is a far worse thing to do than saying some mean things.  It puts him in more or less the same role Lysandra detested for so long, puts him back in the role he was playing for a decade, and they couldn’t be bothered to show him the respect of discussing it with him first.

I think the better question is: will Aedion ever forgive Aelin and Lysandra?

Avatar

I completely agree with this. I think Lysandra has already forgiven him. I think she forgave him as soon as he said it. Because she understands that he’s hurt and upset. She understands that he’s lashing out in a moment of justifiable anger. She understands the situation that her and Aelin have put him in. Lysandra may be loyal to Aelin but she’s not unsympathetic to Aedion and the role she’s played in hurting him. She understands that the whole situation isn’t fair.

So yes I think Lysandra will forgive/has already forgiven Aedion for a few words said in the heat of the moment.

Like @fuzzballsheltiepants said the real question is can Aedion forgive her for her betrayal? For lying to him after promising honesty? For agreeing to a plan that uses him and his body without his knowledge or consent? Which is a much bigger issue than a few words said in a justified moment of anger.

Another excellent point, @cassianandfenrysaremyboyos.  (And please, continue jumping onto my posts, you always add excellent things that I forget about!!)

Aedion Ashryver Defence Squad reporting in for duty!

I completely agree with both of your points, @fuzzballsheltiepants and @cassianandfenrysaremyboyos.

I would add that Aedion has spent his entire life placing Aelin on a pedestal. He has devoted himself to her cause and forgiven her every hurtful or questionable decision that she has made so far.

But this is a step beyond. She has conspired with the woman he was falling in love with (ie allowing himself to be vulnerable with) to manipulate the most fundamental and personal part of his life and future. For a man who spent the last decade trapped in servitude in a role that demanded he wear a mask at all times and use his body against his will… this plan that Aelin and Lysandra concocted echoes strongly of that. And I don’t believe that Aedion will forgive either of them quickly or easily.

I can see it taking until the end of KoA, when everything has more or less worked out fine and all the bad guys are defeated and all the good guys are alive and well (let me have my delusions, you guys), and MAYBE at that point Aedion will say, no harm no foul, and learn to forgive the two most important people in his life. But it won’t be easy and not should it be.

Yaaaaassss!!  Another excellent point by @beka2305!

Aedion’s entire world was crashing down around him--again--in that moment on the beach.  The two people he was putting his trust in the most were conspiring to use him without his knowledge or permission, and use him in a sexual way.  This is, quite honestly, despicable.

Aedion’s a forgiving guy, he’s proven that, but he is absolutely entitled to be crushed and furious, and he has every right to take as long as he needs to recover from that.

Lysandra

You know how we all panic because we don’t know how we’re supposed to deal with her not living forever with Aedion? Just hold onto hope from this quote from Queen of Shadows where Manon first scents Lysandra in the prison wagon bound for Morath.

“Not Valg, not Fae. Not entirely human.”

NOT. ENTIRELY. HUMAN. She is a full powered shifter, unlike her uncle so it’s totally possible that part of those powers could include immortality and I REFUSE TO BE TOLD DIFFERENTLY UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE.

THERE IS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL. PLEASE BE IMMORTAL.

I thought that Aedion isn’t immortal or we aren’t sure at the very least

We aren’t sure but given how much fae he has since his father is pure fae and he’s inherited so many of the other traits… it’s likely. It’s even quoted in the books that he may very well stay young while Aelin ages. So this leads me to believe both Aelin and Aedion will be settling. And soon. Especially for Aedion.

Anonymous asked:

(not trying to be rude at all) why do you like aedion? I stopped liking him when he was extremely misogynistic and unfair with lysandra

I think that’s an easy interpretation to have of his behavior in EoS, and believe me, you are not alone.  (I’m assuming you’re referring to the beach scene after the attack in Skull’s Bay and at the end of the book after Aedion learns that Lysandra will be mimicking Aelin.)

So, here goes, and I’m going to put this below a cut because I’m wordy af so this is going to be ridiculously long.

Avatar

Yes! All of this! And just to add another reason why his anger is justified in the beach scene… Not only has he been lied to by the one’s he loves and trusts most in life, but he finds out that they planned to use him for his body! Use him to have children with Lysandra so that would resemble Aelin. Basically they made a plan to use him to breed. And that is such a betrayal. Such a over stepping of boundaries and of basic consent. Imagine finding out someone had made a plan behind your back for you to have someone’s children and had not consulted you in any way, they just expected you to do it, ignoring your say in the matter. Ignoring your right to choose what you do with YOUR body. You can’t say that you wouldn’t be angry or hurt or upset in the same situation.

@cassianandfenrysaremyboyos  YAAASSSS!!!  Thank you, I can’t believe I forgot to include that oh-so-important part!  That his cousin, the person he loves most in the world, and the woman he’s been falling in love with planned to use him - Adarlan’s whore - without consulting him or thinking about his feelings on the matter.

And the plan called for the paternity to be a secret! Aedion’s own father didn’t get the choice to be in his child’s life. Didn’t get the choice to actually be a father. to be a dad. And they were going to force Aedion into the same situation. Except this time, Aedion would know the kid was his. Gavriel got to live in ignornace. Aedion would be forced into a front row seat to watch his child grow up while pretending he wasn’t the father. Even after all the pain and hurt Aedion suffered because he thought father abandoned him, Lysandra and Aelin were going to do a similar thing to another child. To Aedion’s child. How could he be anything but furious?

Another great point!!  So glad to see all the Aedion love today, not gonna lie
