Several photographs were taken of this fake centaur aquamanile in 1903 and 1926. It was created in the late 19th century, most likely modelled after a real one in the National Museum of Budapest (lower center, photograph from 1896). It was depicted in an auction catalogue in 1903 and a critical text on the dealer in the same year (first two upper left). For the text, new photographs were taken of it around the same time, the negatives survive in the archives of the MKG Hamburg (on the right, the lower one being the illustration used for the article). Then again it was photographed in 1926 when it reappeared on the art market (lower left). Notice how the images produced to denounce the forgery were direct counter-images to the catalogue illustration (same full profile, but better lighting and pointing to the other direction). The picture from 1926 then was an even more direct answer to the initial auction illustration of 1903, replicating the orientation and masking of the item.
