HAVANA, CUBA

Having very few expectations going to Cuba I can say that I’m very pleased with our stay.  I knew that Fidel’s recent passing would lay a huge impact to the country, especially Havana.  Valerie and I spent 5 nights in the country’s capital, which was plenty of time to explore the city’s colorful buildings, and rich culture.  We ate at many great restaurants and rode beach cruisers around all 3 sections of the city.  From what I’ve learned, Raul Castro has been progressive for Cuba in his time as president.

Obama also loosened up the embargo by allowing direct US flights to Havana.  Tourism seems like its doing great.  Cubans are extremely helpful and friendly to outsiders trying to gather insight of this beautiful country.  Strangers gladly helped us with directions numerous times.  I find that to be very rare here in SF.  I highly recommend going as an American.  It’s so close, but so different and unique.  But who knows how much long it will remain a country that looks and feels like the 1950s.  I’d go ASAP! -KEP

PACIFIC NORTHWEST PT 1

Here are some photos I shot at the end of June and beginning of July.    I travelled from Seattle up north to Whistler and many places in between.  I enjoyed shooting how green and lush the landscape is.  Nature taking back from humanity is a constant theme up there.  The weeds grow at an extremely fast rate and quickly take back what it once owned.  -KEP

ClIf Bar Cykel Scramble

Last Saturday was the inaugural Cykel Scramble.  The day took many twists and turns but ended up with all smiles.  All the teams took a lot of time picking out their race day outfits, and customizing their bikes for this one of a kind race.  My team, the Bad Boy Club consisted of a steady crew that ride all kinds of bikes these days.  However, we started on BMX.  We went with a BMX theme wearing race jerseys and rode John Twins race inspired BMX.  Our team had a last minute injury a few days prior to race day, and another injury 30 seconds into practice.  Billy actually broke his crank arm off in the roller section and his knee went right into sharp metal.  He had to go to the hospital and get 13 stitches on his knee.  This called for a last minute sub to come race on Bad Boy Club.  Danny called in to work and made it happen.

Our friends the Holy Rollers competed in the toasters class!  They won best crash at the race which resulted in snapped handle bars.  Highlights included the rocketeer team trying to jump the keg every lap and getting super sketchy.  The Jamaican Bobsled team riding with incense burning on the back of their saddle.  The biggest highlight was how everyone was hi-5 ing one another and smiling.  It’s refreshing to see this at a race.  I know this is the most I’ve ever smiled in a race.  Despite all the wounds and broken bikes, I can’t wait for next years antics! -KEP

Farmlands - Brentwood, CA - Mamiya 645pro - Kodak Portra 400 - Ahsah

A few miles off CA SR4 is a natural preserve called Round Valley. I particularly like coming up here when winter is on it’s last chilly breath. Right around that time, spring comes along and begins washing away all the brown with a fresh coat of neutral greens. If you’re ever in the area, observing this mid stage transformation is pretty fascinating.
