some lyric things

So the full version of the op came out (absolute banger) and I could not contain my excitement so here are some translations of some of the lyrics shown on screen, specifically the parts with the numbers (which unfortunately don’t really mean much in connection to the plot) and also some other stuff I found interesting

The song lyrics are based around phrases with the numbers one to seven, many of them are 4 word idioms. Disclaimer: I know Chinese but my Japanese is not very good. However I have google on my side and the Japanese idioms come from Chinese so rest assured I’m not just pulling this out of my ass

1. 憂: describing someone’s mood swinging between rejoicing and worrying

2. 瓜つ: alike as two peas in a pod

3. 再: again and again

4. 苦八苦 : suffering/working very hard. A Buddhist phrase

5. 十風雨: to be blessed with rain (prosperous conditions for farming)

6. 根清浄:  purification of the six roots of perception (a Buddhist concept), to be free of desire

7. 癖: used to describe a person’s habits/eccentricities

1. 夕: within a day, a short period of time

2. の舞: to repeat the same mistake as someone before you

3&4 朝: three in the morning and four in the evening, could mean using superficial things to deceive someone, or describe someone who’s indecisive

8. In this part they overshoot with the counting. They’re supposed to count from one to seven, but they count to eight. The following lyric is ‘there’s no number eight, is there?’

This is probably a reference to Yashiro’s name,

Also, people have theorized that Yashiro’s connection with the number 8 could be referencing a possible eighth school mystery. Paired with that lyric… interpret that how you will.

Now going into ‘not quite sure what this is about’ territory

7. 転 : there are 2 idioms that contain these words and I cant understand the lyrics clearly enough to see which it could be

七転八倒 : to writhe in agony (fun)

七転び八起き: falling seven times and getting up eight times, to keep going until you succeed

7&8  人に癖、我が身に癖: ‘others have 7 vices, I have 8’ an idiom; a warning to oneself that it’s easy to see other people’s vices, but hard to see your own

Now going into ‘i just think it’s interesting’ territory

鎌草 (鐮草?) a type of grass (possibly Elatostema subfalcatum?)

I could only find information on this in chinese, but there’s certain taboos surrounding graves: letting it get overgrown with grass is bad, but completely barren ground is bad too. Apparently this type of grass is one that brings good luck, and is acceptable to grow on graves. Pretty interesting considering the series’ connection with death and the afterlife and all that

And finally near the end of the song, there’s a lyric that translates to (roughly, I cant make out the whole thing) ‘We changed fate once before, let’s do it again!’

No doubt this refers to Yugi Amane changing his future, and how they’re going to try to change Yashiro’s future too, to let her live

that’s all from me. I’m sure translations are gonna come soon from much more reputable sources but here’s what I have to offer for now

I wish I’d joined this fandom earlier - I seem to have missed a lot of theorycrafting and guesswork fun! That aside, I have finally finished up a transcription and translation of the lyrics here with notes, if it helps!

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun OP [No.7] Full Translation w/ Notes

This song was exceedingly, horrifyingly difficult. They decided to jam every wordplay, every pun and original work reference in here, add a pinch of rap and then expected me to TL it because the song was just too cool not to.

I had a draft on Tumblr that I ended up not using because the formatting did not allow for jamming extra references in. I started that draft right after the first episode aired, and even then I only managed to get the full rap and finish up my notes by today. tl;dr, this song is genius but also I never want to do this again.

Tiny Light - Hanako-kun ED Full Translation

This song grew on me. Also I’m mad because I can’t figure out the middle part of Hanako-kun OP, and that’s the one that is more depressing and more Hanako-like. I’m almost there! That song is so frustrating and so genius at the same time, I have never had so many translator notes for a single song.

Oh, I’m into Hanako-kun now - in my defense, it’s a very cute show. It seems like every week I’m into a new thing, but what can you do?
