So apparently the pro-Tetris scene is exploding right now because a 13 year old nerd just reached the game's true killscreen for the first time ever
So, basically, for much of Tetris's history, people believed level 29 was the "last" level of Tetris, as the speed of the blocks would get so high that no human could do anything but lose; the blocks would go so fast that human hands physically could not control them. However, Tetris does not get any faster beyond that point, so if you're capable of playing level 29, you're capable of playing hypothetically infinitely.
Except Tetris, the original version for the NES, is not a hypothetical. It's a physical object, an item you can touch and hold, and it has limits. Many classic arcade-style video games have honest-to-god killscreens, where the game breaks so badly that it becomes completely unplayable. Pac-Man, famously, has a killscreen that garbles half of the playing field and doesn't spawn enough dots for the level to ever end. Tetris was assumed to be no exception, but because of the presumed-impossible difficulty of level 29, the community considered that to be Tetris's killscreen, and all high-leveled Tetris play centered around level 29 being the absolute end of your run, no matter what.
But, and if you've heard literally anything about people getting insanely good at retro games, you'll know what comes next. Of course, someone figures out how to control the game past level 29. In 2011, Thor Aackerlund discovered a technique now known as "hypertapping" (which is exactly what it sounds like, tapping very very fast) - and became the first person to play level 30.
But hypertapping wasn't enough. It was still stupidly difficult to get to, let alone past, level 30. Then this guy named Cheez shows up and finds that using an even more absurd technique, called "Rolling", which was even faster than hypertapping. People weren't just hitting level 30, but then 40, then 50, and then all the way into the 90s. Since all post-29 levels have the exact same speed, once they mastered rolling, they were pretty much good to play forever.
With levels 29+ conquered, now players could face the real killscreen of Tetris. A Tetris-playing AI got the first crash, but since it was playing a very slightly modified version (to show a larger score number, because the vanilla score counter didn't have enough digits), it only kinda-sorted counted. So the community picked apart the game's code to find where the game could hypothetically crash while completely unmodified - and found the current human record was not that far off.
So the entire community fucking scrambles to be the first person to crash Tetris, but then were confounded by another technically-not-game-ending-but-still-pretty-much-impossible-for-a-human bug; after level 138, the game stops choosing the colors for the blocks from where it's supposed to, leading it to display some truly heinously color palettes. Most of them are just ugly, but a few make the blocks you're placing next to invisible. (This was actually known about before the AI even crashed the game, and part of the reason the AI could get so much further than humans; it didn't need to visually see the blocks.)
Just next to invisible, though. You could still sorta see most of the blocks, and when you pass the level, the game pulls a new color palette, so if you can tough it out long enough to get 10 lines, you're probably gonna be able to continue your game for a while after that. It's annoying as hell, but not impossible. So, of course, the runners start getting past them and brushing up against the crashable levels.
And by runners, I mostly mean a 13 year old boy who goes by the online handle Blue Scuti. He'd skyrocketed into fame in the Tetris community relatively recently by achieving scores and levels that most adults couldn't even dream of, so of course he was among the first people to get past both impossible-palette levels, and he was able to keep going.
The game doesn't always crash in one specific spot, though. It just starts having a chance to crash after a certain point. You might have to perform some specific actions in specific windows of time to get it to crash on purpose, and it's much more likely that you'll lose control and lose your run before you achieve that goal.
Blue Scuti missed the first crash opportunity in his run. He was the first person to get that far at all, so it'd be a record regardless, but he was determined to win. He somehow keeps his cool, despite being a literal child with thousands of eyes on him (this was streamed on Twitch, of course), and never loses control of his stack, all the way until he reaches the next crash opportunity all the way on level 157.
And he fucking does it. He gets a single line clear in the middle of level 157 and the game just stops. It completely crashed. A 13 year old boy nicknamed Blue Scuti is the first human being in history to crash Tetris in this way. He is the first person ever to see Tetris's real killscreen. This game is over twice his age, and he is the first to kill it dead.
This kid fucking rules.
(if you want more detail, I learned basically all of the above from this video by aGameScout, please watch it!!)
the ability to say "i dont have a tiktok" in social situations makes me feel so powerful. like the general reaction is "shock, confusion, then this weird 'thats probably a good thing' response" its so fun
Excuse me?
One time I was working as a waiter at a burger joint where the fries were tossed in salt and coriander and as I was bringing food over to the table for these two huge beefy guys one of them asks what the green stuff is so I go "it's coriander" and his friend goes very seriously "he can't have coriander" and I'm thinking shit ok maybe he's allergic and guy 1 starts pulling up his sleeve to show me something and I'm thinking shit shit shit he's probably breaking out in hives rn and it's my fault but he just shows me his arm and he has this huge cursive font tattoo that just says "I fucking hate coriander"

Just wanted to pass by to tell you that I loved your analysis of Neuvillette's type on PDB! Full disclosure, my opinion is subject to intense bias since I'm an ISTP myself (~90% certainty) however I hope this is at least some validation for your part. It's amusing since his behaviors are significantly different from mine, and yet his words all 'make sense', for lack of a better word. Contrast to Wriothesley, who elicits a 'well he's right, buuuut...' feeling. Difficult to describe in 500 charas.
Hello kind stranger ! This was a very unexpected ask i'll say, even though I suppose my username IS exactly the same on PDB as it is here, making me quite easy to find in practice haha
I'm really happy my comment made sense to you ! Even now, I still firmly believe everything I wrote, and particularly that Neuvillette is a high Ti user. I don't know if you've read it, but I think there's another very good example of his Ti in his character story 5; when he describes his opinion on constellation and "fate"
One as great as he should have no need for a constellation to shine over him. After all, "fate" is merely the manner in which the present ruler of this world plays with living beings. Now that he has obtained one part of seven of the authority over the mortal realm, and reforged the throne and title of a "Fully Fledged Dragon," he is one strong enough to equal and rival "the human realm," and logic would dictate that he need not subscribe to this system known as "fate."
I think this is another good example that, at the end of the day, Neuvillette's thinking process is closer to Ti than it is to Te. There is a lot of "If Y, then logically following from this premise we can conclude X" when we're actually given the opportunity to delve into his mind. Pierce made the distinction between Ti & Te this way:
→ « Introverted Thinking — judgement based on what is subjectively denoted; i.e. a priori analysis; e.g. “If you accept my definition of 'murderer', then you must conclude with me that Colonel Mustard is one.” »
→ Extraverted Thinking — judgement based on what is objectively denoted; i.e. empirical science; e.g. “We all see the evidence (bloody hands, scene of the crime, etc.) therefore, we must all conclude that Colonel Mustard is Mr. Body's murderer.”
And I think that if we look at how Neuvillette thinks "for himself", beyond his role of judge where he is supposed to follow the laws, he really does fit the former more. Another example I developed somewhere else on his page that even Vautrain's trial shows this tendency imo ! Forgive me for this copy-past and ramble haha, this was in answer to someone asking how exactly Neuvillette could be "impartial" but have a subjective function as dominant, & my answer went like this:
This impartiality & "objectivity" while being subjective is further shown in his story quest. Despite Vautrain being one of the people he is closest to, he does not treat him differently from others in the court. but his judgment is still subjective, as evidenced by the ease with which he considers "different kinds of justice" during the trial. Te users, due to their "inherent" objectivity, often think that everyone with the same information should come to the same objective conclusion, while Ji users do not. Pierce described… Te : “We all see the evidence (bloody hands, scene of the crime, etc.) therefore, we must all conclude that Colonel Mustard is Mr. Body's murderer.” Ti : “If you accept my definition of 'murderer', then you must conclude with me that Colonel Mustard is one.” The way Neuvillette approaches that trial shows that for him, laws are simply a "definition", a logical premise from which a logical conclusion follow in the context of a trial.
Neuvillette personally understands Vautrain's actions, and even "agrees" that depending on your definition of justice, his actions can be seen as just and right. However as the chief's justice, his job is to follow the established laws. And the way he describes that decision is how we can see the use of Ti despite his "following of the laws". Because the way it describes it pretty much echoes the colonel Mustard example. -> Personal justice does not equate justice as defined by the law. If we can agree that this court judges whether actions are just or not depending on whether they follow the law, then we can see that your actions have violated it. This makes Vautrain, according to the law, guilty. This is basically what Neuvillette says, in subtext. And he stays impartial by holding strong to these kind of decisions despite personal feelings on the matter. It's his job, so he follows the rules of his job. What he personally thinks and how he takes decision outside of it though is a whole other matter.
I feel like Genshin has become much less stereotypical & much more interesting in his character writing as of late so Neuvillette is very dear to my heart on that subject ! And he's, as you implied, a very good reminder that MBTI is first and foremost a system that deals with COGNITION and not behaviour. Thus it is how a character thinks, and not its actions, that should be examined to determine his MBTI type. Thank you again for taking the time to tell me here what you thought of my argument, it was unexpected but very much welcome <3 Hope these additions also make sense to you !
How to do this....
Do you play arknights, what's your thought about it?
Dude, I’m obsessed. This game is fun as hell. As of the time of writing, I am a dolphin who spent upwards of $250 on this game (and to think it was still less than what I spent on Voyager’s rate up in FGO alone), with 17 E2 and 90 rolls saved up for Phantom and Ayerscarpe.
I like this game because of 1. the lore - I freaking love how they just drop one or two sentence of hints in a character profile that come back later in some sort of event to punch you in the gut. The setting allows for moral, societal conflicts - what would you have done, what is the right thing to do, are the villains really wrong, you name it. The story may err on the side of cliche at times, and I prefer reading JP text because EN translation is confusing as hell, but it works well enough.
2. the gameplay - the dopamine hits when you get a map right is amazing. Strategy, timing, positioning are all involved, and if you’re bored of puzzles (like I used to be with FEH’s maps) you can just overlevel the crap out of your OP 6*s. You can just get the map right one time and then let it run in the background while you do whatever. It’s the love child of FGO’s engaged gameplay and GBF’s Full Auto, and I love it.
3. the music - small point, but AK doesn’t skimp on the music. They have their own image songs, collabs, CC theme songs (Operation Pyrite says hi), and banger boss music. frostnovaevolutionhard is still one of my favorite to this day.
4. the gacha - the gacha????? But yeah, compared to games like FGO, GBF, FEH, SinoAlice, you name it, there’s a lot more value I could find out of the AK gacha than the rest. Monthly packs (headhunting and card) gives you so much value for your money it’s insane. But GBF is far more generous! - you say, and yeah, but part of the value is the characters I get, which brings me to point 5.
5. the characters - art, voice, design, skins, relationship lore, you name it. Different artists, so it avoids being stale like GBF art, and quality controlled, so it avoids FGO’s questionable designs. I play this game for the guys, but my first E2 was Skadi, and that goes to show how in love I am with her design, voice, pretty much everything. Don’t even talk to me about Reunion - I want every single one of them. They really make you invested in the characters.
I read a translation of this song on a youtube video, but decided I liked to put my own flair in especially considering this is a ReoNa song, so this is what came of it.
This song made me sad. Arknights in general makes me sad. Especially after chapter 6 of the main story, and I worked on this translation thinking of a certain character in that chapter. I just wanted everyone to be happy...
So the full version of the op came out (absolute banger) and I could not contain my excitement so here are some translations of some of the lyrics shown on screen, specifically the parts with the numbers (which unfortunately don’t really mean much in connection to the plot) and also some other stuff I found interesting
The song lyrics are based around phrases with the numbers one to seven, many of them are 4 word idioms. Disclaimer: I know Chinese but my Japanese is not very good. However I have google on my side and the Japanese idioms come from Chinese so rest assured I’m not just pulling this out of my ass
1. 一喜一憂: describing someone’s mood swinging between rejoicing and worrying
2. 瓜二つ: alike as two peas in a pod
3. 再三: again and again
4. 四苦八苦 : suffering/working very hard. A Buddhist phrase
5. 十風五雨: to be blessed with rain (prosperous conditions for farming)
6. 六根清浄: purification of the six roots of perception (a Buddhist concept), to be free of desire
7. 七癖: used to describe a person’s habits/eccentricities
1. 一朝一夕: within a day, a short period of time
2. 二の舞: to repeat the same mistake as someone before you
3&4 朝三暮四: three in the morning and four in the evening, could mean using superficial things to deceive someone, or describe someone who’s indecisive
8. In this part they overshoot with the counting. They’re supposed to count from one to seven, but they count to eight. The following lyric is ‘there’s no number eight, is there?’
This is probably a reference to Yashiro’s name, 八尋
Also, people have theorized that Yashiro’s connection with the number 8 could be referencing a possible eighth school mystery. Paired with that lyric… interpret that how you will.
Now going into ‘not quite sure what this is about’ territory
7. 七転 : there are 2 idioms that contain these words and I cant understand the lyrics clearly enough to see which it could be
七転八倒 : to writhe in agony (fun)
七転び八起き: falling seven times and getting up eight times, to keep going until you succeed
7&8 人に七癖、我が身に八癖: ‘others have 7 vices, I have 8’ an idiom; a warning to oneself that it’s easy to see other people’s vices, but hard to see your own
Now going into ‘i just think it’s interesting’ territory
鎌草 (鐮草?) a type of grass (possibly Elatostema subfalcatum?)
I could only find information on this in chinese, but there’s certain taboos surrounding graves: letting it get overgrown with grass is bad, but completely barren ground is bad too. Apparently this type of grass is one that brings good luck, and is acceptable to grow on graves. Pretty interesting considering the series’ connection with death and the afterlife and all that
And finally near the end of the song, there’s a lyric that translates to (roughly, I cant make out the whole thing) ‘We changed fate once before, let’s do it again!’
No doubt this refers to Yugi Amane changing his future, and how they’re going to try to change Yashiro’s future too, to let her live
that’s all from me. I’m sure translations are gonna come soon from much more reputable sources but here’s what I have to offer for now
I wish I’d joined this fandom earlier - I seem to have missed a lot of theorycrafting and guesswork fun! That aside, I have finally finished up a transcription and translation of the lyrics here with notes, if it helps!
This song was exceedingly, horrifyingly difficult. They decided to jam every wordplay, every pun and original work reference in here, add a pinch of rap and then expected me to TL it because the song was just too cool not to.
I had a draft on Tumblr that I ended up not using because the formatting did not allow for jamming extra references in. I started that draft right after the first episode aired, and even then I only managed to get the full rap and finish up my notes by today. tl;dr, this song is genius but also I never want to do this again.
This song grew on me. Also I’m mad because I can’t figure out the middle part of Hanako-kun OP, and that’s the one that is more depressing and more Hanako-like. I’m almost there! That song is so frustrating and so genius at the same time, I have never had so many translator notes for a single song.
Oh, I’m into Hanako-kun now - in my defense, it’s a very cute show. It seems like every week I’m into a new thing, but what can you do?
Lyrics under read more:
No pictures, no preamble, not even Japanese lyrics transcription. I listened to the song here. It’s 12am, I’m hyperventilating, this song hurts. I’m going to lie down.
Edit 8/9/2019: Formatting, added some notes. Nothing fundamentally changes, not even the pain I feel whenever I look at this.
Edit 9/4/2019: Added Japanese lyrics for my own references.
I guess the way it goes is that I come here every few months to word dump something Shimazaki-related and leave. Today it’s Eugeo’s character song ‘Waking the belief’. There might be a translation out there already, but if mine helps in any way, I would be happy with just that. My translation is far from literal, because literal doesn’t sound good. I made some liberties in wording, but the original meaning should be there.
It’s a sad song. I wish Kirito and Eugeo had a song. I’ll stop now.
(Late) Happy birthday Eugeo! It seems I’m destined to never be free from this hellhole. Putting this here because Tumblr is at least good with formatting and long text. Part 2+3 will be done whenever I have time, though at least I’m like a third of the way into part 2. I did all of them because I’m stupid.
