Maleficent quickly formed a plan in her mind. The soldiers outnumbered her. And they did have iron weapons. But she had magic. And Diaval. Looking at him, she narrowed her eyes. She was going to need something a bit scarier than a raven to help frighten off the soldiers. Raising her staff, she softly said, “Bring them to me.”       With a small cry, Diaval fell to his knees. And then, in front of Maleficent’s eyes, he transformed into an enormous wolf. His fur was thick and black and long; sharp talons extended from huge paws. He was a terrifying creature. The only things that were not frightening were the wolf’s eyes, which still retained Diaval’s kindness. He bounded off.       The soldiers stopped in their tracks as soon as they heard a loud, echoing howl.

Catching sight of the faerie, the raven-man cocked his head. “What have you done to me?” he asked, gesturing at his body, clearly unhappy with its present form. His voice was surprisingly rich and melodic for one not used to having the power of speech.       “Would you rather I let them beat you to death?” Maleficent asked.       The raven-man lifted his wingless arms into the air. “I’m not certain,” he replied.       “Stop complaining,” Maleficent said as she began to walk around him slowly, scrutinizing. She had to admit he wasn’t terrible to look at, even for a human. She could have created far worse.

“May I speak freely?”       “You can’t seem to help yourself.”       “You’re not as bad as you think you are.”       Annoyed, she waves her hand to transform him. “Be a bird!”       But this time, he catches her hand and holds it. “Every time you don’t like what I have to say you transform me back into a bird.”       “I thought you liked being a bird.”       He looks at her with more feelings than he can share. “Not as much as I used to.”

Diaval let out a sigh. Once, just once, it would be nice if Maleficent were able to see what was really going on. It would be nice to hear her say, “Please come with me, Diaval. We can do anything as long as we’re together.” But Diaval knew those were words he would never hear. And while he wished it were different, he also knew he could never let Maleficent go into that castle alone. Letting out a little groan, he ran to catch up.

Maleficent’s laughter fades abruptly. “Say that again.”       “She can only be woken by true love’s kiss.”       “But there’s no such thing.”       “What?”       “There’s no such thing as true love. It doesn’t exist.”       She’s looking right at him. But she can’t see the love in his eyes.

Maleficent watched him go, her emotions churning. She hated him for talking to her like that. Hated him for making her feel guilty. Yet if she hated him so much, why was she so upset to see him go? Maleficent sighed. Why had everything gotten so complicated?

The Faeries cheer. Musicians play and the Faeries dance. Aurora sees Prince Phillip standing in the back of the crowd. She smiles. Maleficent stands with Diaval. Her hand finds his as they both struggle with their emotions.
