I know Lwaxana was originally written as a horny cougar joke but I kinda love the idea that betazoids have a different reproductive curve than humans and reach peak fertility in their forties or fifties. There would be a whole cultural idea around having to have at least a few decades of life experience and a well established career before you're even considered ready to raise a child.

All this to say that Lwaxana having Deanna in her twenties was probably a huge scandal. Like, this girl from this incredibly prestigious family having the equivalent of a teenage pregnancy and then, because the father is a human the child is basically disabled as well. Prime gossip material.

I believe that is why Lwaxana is like that. She had to learn to not give a shit about other people's opinion very young and she became the legend of a federation ambassador and the woman who will live her best life no matter what just to show them.

As silly as it sounds Lwaxana Troi has done a lot to help me cope with my own losses this year. The episodes “Half a Life” and “Dark Pages” have made me weep, as the way she copes is similar to how I have… Obviously, my situation doesn’t exactly mirror the episodes much at all. But, they’ve been great at helping me process my feelings and have provided an outlet to me grieve.

I’m aware Lwaxana has done some bad things and people can find her annoying, but I’m deeply grateful for the episodes where we get to see that sadder side of her. So, Lwaxana Troi does have a special place in my heart for helping me deal with own trauma and grief.

Trektober day 21: A Vital Mission for Federation Diplomacy

“I wouldn’t be asking you to do this if there were other options available,” Serena, the head of the diplomatic corps, said as she handed the two ambassadors their briefing PADDs. “But it is vital that the Federation establishes diplomatic relations with the Shor’esan, given their proximity to the Romulan Neutral Zone, and their cultural values are very clear.”

“I request that you explain them again,” Sarek said. “I cannot comprehend how this course of action could be the only one available.”

“Oh, Sarek dear,” Lwaxana said, “will it really be so bad?”

Sarek glanced over at her. “Yes,” he said.

“The Shor’esan mate for life, and those pairs always pursue the same career,” Serena said. “To send them only one ambassador would be like sending half an ambassador would seem to us. It would be almost grotesque.”

“Ambassadors Nilem and Qixa are married,” Sarek said. 

“They’re also in the Delta Quadrant,” Serena said. “Even if I recalled them right now, which I’m not willing to do in the middle of what their reports suggest is a delicate negotiation, they would not be here in time for this assignment. It is time-sensitive, and that means you.”

“My marriage was a matter of public record,” Sarek said. “It would not be believed that Ambassador Troi and I –”

Serena cut him off. “Ambassador Troi also has multiple previous marriages as a matter of public record. The Shor’esan don’t expect us to mate for life – they just need their ambassadors to be a bonded pair. In fact, Ambassador Troi’s previous marriages may be an asset. It means it won’t seem inconsistent if you don’t continue the fiction once the diplomatic relationship has been established.”

“I would have certain requirements if we are to proceed with this charade,” Sarek said. “We must observe Vulcan norms of public affection. Ambassador Troi must not touch me. I will not dishonour the memory of my wife with protestations of love.”

Serena looked to Lwaxana, who nodded. “I suppose I can agree to that,” she said. “Though it might not be quite as much fun.”

“The Federation does not conduct diplomacy for your personal amusement,” Sarek said.

Lwaxana raised an eyebrow, and smiled. “Are you sure about that?” she said. “I think this assignment might prove otherwise. My beloved husband. My darling Sarek. I believe we have some Shor’esans to win over.”
