From the DVD commentary, episode 1:
Douglas: I remember though, this was - happily in the scheduling terms - it was one of the last scenes that we shot with David and Michael. Which is the right time to shoot such a scene, an opening scene, because they'd know their characters inside out.
Neil: Yes, they knew who they were and they played all of the subtext and they’re glorious. Of course, poor David is up there in a desert with the wind blowing with giant contact lenses on.
Douglas: And with sand wanting to get into every pore of his eye.
Neil: And he said, 'That was the hardest day of all shooting'.
From the DVD commentary, episode 1:
The Garden of Eden scene, the wing scene is coming up
Douglas Mackinnon: And we’re heading towards what, I think, is actually my favourite shot in the entire series, which is the shot where it starts to rain and a wing comes up to cover the other angel.
Neil Gaiman: And it also covers Adam and Eve.
Douglas Mackinnon: Yeah.
Neil Gaiman: I love the fact that they’re covered by it too.
People have pointed out that the piano lid in the very very very last shot of the last episode reflects that wing and I’ve always meant to ask you if that was intentional or just gloriously accidental.
Douglas Mackinnon: It was gloriously intentional.
Fun fact: is some languages the grand piano is called ‘a wing’ :) (Flügel in German, křídlo in Czech)
My friend started sending me the DVD extra contents and I have been losing it all morning – I haven’t seen anyone posted these yet, so here is the storyboards for the Eden scene, featuring BUFF AZIRAPHALE AND BUFF CROWLEY
Buff boys aside (though that’s not easy, because!!!), so, who had that brilliant idea of abandoning the loincloths and put them in robes? :/ :)
Buff boys back... WOW.
I just noticed: in ep 1 on the wall of the garden when it starts raining, Crowley starts moving towards Az before Az extends his wing. Az doesn't offer shelter to Crowley, Crowley is the one to seek shelter first. What do you think this means?
Hiya :), mmm, I suppose we could speak about Crowley being afraid of the lightning and shuffling closer to the angel while angel automatically raises his wing, but, well, I think that since they were adding the wings in post-production
they merely didn’t time it perfectly right with the step, I think it should be first Azi raising up his wing and Crowley shuffling towards him :). But who knows.
What is brilliant in this scene though is the parallel with Eve and Adam in the back :). Both couples reaching for each other at the same time :).
Crowley telling Az on the wall "You're an angel, I don't think you can do the wrong thing" is sarcasm??? I always thought he meant "If you didn't fall when the rest of us did then you must be a good angel"
From the book:
He gave Crawly a worried grin.
"That was the best course, wasn't it?"
"I'm not sure it's actually possible for you to do evil," said Crawly sarcastically. Aziraphale didn't notice the tone.
:) so, yes, that was sarcasm
Can we talk about that Eden clip though? "you're an angel, I don't think you can do the wrong thing" + Aziraphale's reaction?? like?? Michael could not have played it any better, he's just so brilliant at his "not showing how much I love you" shtick :')
Oooh yessss. Michael plays the angel who perhaps for the first time in his celestial life does maybe the ‘wrong’ thing - now his head his full of it - and not noticing Crowley’s sarcasm brilliantly! He’s so greatful that he has been reassured he cannot do the wrong thing just because he is an angel (as if half of the - at that time still - angels didn’t do the whole revolution and falling thing).
I am so incredibly happy with the casting of Michael Sheen and David Tennant. They are both so damn magnificent! Like... can you imagine anyone else playing them? O_O
Hi =) I‘m trying to catch up with all the news about the GO miniseries, and I‘ve seen GIF sets of Crowley & Aziraphale’s first meeting at Garden Eden. Is there a link to the original clip/video? Thanks in advance!
Hi!
Well, it’s like this - Neil Gaiman and the GO cast were promoting Good Omens at SXSW. At the panel they showed three short scenes: Crowley and Aziraphale at the Shakespeare play, Gabriel and Aziraphale meeting and the Eden scene where Aziraphale and Crowley meet for the first time.
Neil asked the audience that if they were filming for them not to share it, but well, I think somebody was too overwhelmed by the delicousness of the Eden scene not to do so, so that one leaked.
I don’t have a link to it and do my best to respect Neil’s wishes and not to gif it :) :( (bloody hard!). But from time to time it resurfaces in the ‘good omens’ tag, so you can try to search there ;).
