Hallo :) Wiesst du, wie man ein "Pen Pal" findet? I've just started learning German this year and I think a pen pal would be incredibly helpful. So, in case my sentence didn't make sense, where can one find a pen pal? And what's a "pen pal" auf Deutsch?

Hallo!

Auf Deutsch heißt pen pal Brieffreund/-in und hier findest du den Link, den du suchst (:

Hallo!

Danke für die Idee! Ich schreibe jetzt auf Englisch weiter, damit jeder das verstehen kann.

Here’s a website where you could practice your “real-time” German. Simply list German as a language you’re learning (and your fluency level) and Livemocha will help you find native speakers to chat with:

You could also search for German tandem partners in Japan, though I honestly don’t know

  1. how many Germans there are living in Japan (or the city you’re living in now specifically)
  2. how many of them are looking for tandem partners

Another option is to look for a German Stammtisch in Japan, pop by, and mention your interest in practising your German. I’m sure someone would love to help :)

Are there any FYDers interested in the idea of practising their German with other FYDers? If there’s enough interest, I’ll try to get something up and running :)

Hi there! I wonder if you could help me out by signal boosting a survey? I am looking for American participants who spent time in Germany as an exchange student. The project is about exchange students and bilingualism, and the study is here: bit (.) ly/17g26zu - it should take about 20 minutes. I need responses by Wednesday 4/10. Danke schön! I really appreciate it!

Sure thing :) Sorry for posting this a little late!

Okay so I'm not back in Munich yet, but this post here is queued to give you FYDers a little insight on Silvester (New Year's Eve) in Germany...

  1. A really popular activity is to buy some fireworks and let them off. These fireworks (of classification: Kleinfeuerwerk BAM II) can only be sold 3 days prior to NYE, purchased by people of age 18 or older, and let off from 6 pm on 31 December till 1 am on 1 January. Examples of fireworks under this classification: e Rakete, -n: rocket / skyrocket r Böller, - / r Kracher, -: firecracker e Fontäne, -n: fountain e Feuerwerksbatterie, -n: cake / cake box Image source
  2. EVERY German will have watched Dinner for One, a sketch almost entirely unknown in its country of origin (UK) and the rest of the English-speaking world, at least once in their lives on NYE since it's screened on NYE every year without fail. Read more about this sketch here. Image source
  3. Church bells ring at 12 midnight. Image source
  4. You wish one another "Guten Rutsch!“ or "Einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!", and raise your glass of champagne to one another. Yes, you read that right - the Germans usually take a short break from their beers on this special occasion :) Image source

Deutsch lernen (Teil 1)

For those who learn or want to learn German, I made a list of websites where you can learn and study German online. They are all free (some may also have their “premium” version). Most of them are in German or English. If you have any doubts, send me a message. Enjoy ;)

Part 1 has Online Courses. See also the Part 2 and Part 3.

How cold is Germany in the winter?

Avatar

I have to say it largely depends on where you're headed.

Here in Munich, temperatures generally hover around -2 to 10 deg C in November, -4 to 5 deg C in December, and January and February are just too painfully cold. What really matters is the wind and humidity though; the low temperatures don't feel that bad when there's less wind and moisture.

Here's a popular weather forecasting site if you're interested to know more!

if you're ever looking for a good translater, dict(.)leo(.)org is a very accurate site! My German teacher (who is a professor at a major university in my city) suggested it to my class before we had exams :) feel free to share this with your followers! (they also have an app for smartphones!)

Thanks for the tip!

I like dict.leo.org too, but I generally prefer dict.cc... I don't exactly have a reason for this preference though.

Hallo! I have one question. Do you possibly know anyone who can translate Doctor's diary to english on VIKI...? I just checked and there are just 4 or 5 episodes subbed. Or maybe you can recommend me one blog that can advertise it or you can do it? Anyways.. thanks. Viel Glück.

Hey there! I'd love to help, but I'm currently pretty busy with school.

Does any FYDer watch Doctor's Diary on VIKI and would like to help subtitle them? It's good practice for your German and more fun than exercises! :)

English?

You guys may have noticed by now that I'm as persnickety about my English as I am about my German. It doesn't always work out as well in English though, thanks to the bad habits I've cultivated over the years (e.g. I still have trouble with commas). However, I do try to educate myself, and what better way than through...

TUMBLR! :D

So if you're like me and are interested in these minor details in life, here are some links you should check out:

  1. http://theyuniversity.tumblr.com/ (I aspire to make FYD as fun as this someday, but first, I need the time and skills.)
  2. http://fuckyeahenglish.tumblr.com/ (By a lovely FYDer!)

If you know of any other English tumblrs, feel free to reply to this post and I'll update this list! :)

Cheers FYD
