Which Mordred is your favorite?

ALL MORDREDS.

BOOKS

All Mordreds, aside, I have different preferences. I do love angst Mordred, so Idylls of the Queen (Karr) and The Winter Prince (Wein) where Mordred is also the main character. Regarding books where Mordred is a secondary character, I liked how differently he was written in The road to Avalon (Wolf), but Persia Woolley’s actually has one of my favourite Mordred in her Guinevere trilogy, mostly because her Mordred is very focused on specific political ideas and that’s the reason for the big Arthur vs Mordred.

(special mention to Welsh inspired Mordred and Arthur from The Great Captains by Treece, where Mordred and Arthur are best friends, Mordred is also a little shit but so so well written).

MOVIES

NOW, regarding movies,

scheming Mordred with bird friend is my favourite (from Sword of Lancelot). He is smart, happy, he scheems from the shadows, he has a scheming lady as partner (Sword of Lancelot)

and then, of course, Mists of Avalon. This was one of the first movies I watched where someone played Mordred. Very angsty and angry, also I love Matheson.

And a recent addition has been Mordred from Morte d’Arthur (1984). Just for superficially aesthetic purposes and because he acts like a terrible villain and jerk with great elegance

SERIES + TV

Without a doubt, Mordred from The Legend of King Arthur is the villain Mordred I always wanted. He appears lovely, kind and gentle, and he manipulates people behind the shadows. PERFECT. But then, I love everything from this miniseries.

Honorary mentions: not really a tv show, but the youtube webseries The Campaign for Camelot has an excellent Mordred as one of its main protagonists!

Morte d’Arthur (1983) with Jeremy Brett as King Arthur. A theatrical film adaptation of the book by Sir Thomas Malory. The story is told in narration by John Barton (as Malory) and acting & choreography by a cast of actors. No voices, though, other than Barton’s! That’s my best description but you’ll see what I mean. lol.

Closed captions version here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJGPCphh-QQ Maybe the ccs on the video above are good enough even though they’re not entirely accurate. I noticed yt’s ccs have improved lately.

Then came the the Bishop of Canterbury and said: Sir, what will ye do? Will ye shame all Knighthood? Is not King Arthur your father, and your mother’s brother, and upon her he himself begat you upon his own sister, therefore how may you wed your own father’s wife? Sir, leave this opinion other else I shall curse you with bell, book and candel.

Do thou thy worst, said Sir Mordred, and I defy thee.

So the Bishop departed and did the cursing.
