Some anti-Columbus Day poster designs
Solidarity is one of the most popular words in anarchist or leftist glossary. In leftist places of Western metropoly you barely can find a party with no “soli-” label, or a wall without “soli-” poster. There are a lot of stories and images about movements “from far away” produced and distributed. Some of such stories seems to be much more interesting, fancy, inspiring and real for activists, than local activities. It became an essential part of political subculture of the West and affecting whole international solidarity work a lot. There is no question, that we hardly need sharing, mutual aid and solidarity for our fights, but to make it more effectively we need to understand process better. We need rise questions and discuss. Where the pictures of “others” come from? How inequality in access to resources and post-colonial power relations between regions and countries affect our media politics? How it is connected to gender issues? Why the people do international solidarity-work at all? Can the “meant good” activities became enforcement for power structures and borders, instead of fighting it, as it happens with charity? What we can do to avoid it?
*The event will contain two parts – first an input from an anarchist, who is coming from Eastern Europe and was active in a bunch of international solidarity campaigns in the West. The talk will be about his own experience and some theoretical approaches on the topic. After the input there will be space for open discussion.
**Input will be in English with translation into Turkish. Discussion will be also translated in both languages.
