If Sam had put half as much energy into keeping in contact with Mary last season as he did into criticising Dean’s interactions with her, he might have had a relationship with her too. But while Dean kept reaching out to her, Sam relied on Dean to tell him what was going on with Mary. And the one time he did text her, it was for purely professional reasons, not to say ‘hi’.

So, Sam, what you’re actually supposed to accept here, is what Dean already tried to tell you thirteen years ago: Relationships are a two-way-street and you can’t expect the other person to do all the work.
