This is a Supernatural fan blog with the occasional other fannish post thrown into the mix. Jeremy Carver, Phil Sgriccia, Jerry Wanek and Serge Ladouceur are my heroes, whereas S12 is my personal nightmare from which I'm still hoping to wake up. I'm a multi-shipper and feminist, currently trying hard not to turn into a bitter Dean!girl.

why is death more misogynistic than poor writing?

charlie’s death has been constantly deemed unfair and misogynistic. but i think these descriptions need to be reevaluated. for every so-called unfair female death, there is an equally unfair male death: mary and john, bela and henriksen, ellen and rufus, jo and ash, charlie and kevin… and the list goes on. yet somehow people only complain when the female dies. no, not complain, they have figurative fits and fling accusations. i understand attachment to a character. i understand sadness and grief. i understand anger. but why is it not more deplorable than death that this female character was written to be the most unreal character to have ever existed?

The prototypical Mary Sue is an original female character in a fanfic who obviously serves as an idealized version of the author mainly for the purpose of Wish Fulfillment. She’s exotically beautiful, often having an unusual hair or eye color, and has a similarly cool and exotic name. She’s exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas, and may possess skills that are rare or nonexistent in the canon setting. She also lacks any realistic, or at least story-relevant, character flaws — either that or her “flaws” are obviously meant to be endearing.
She has an unusual and dramatic Back Story. The canon protagonists are all overwhelmed with admiration for her beauty, wit, courage and other virtues, and are quick to adopt her as one of their True Companions, even characters who are usually antisocial and untrusting; if any character doesn’t love her, that character gets an extremely unsympathetic portrayal. She has some sort of especially close relationship to the author’s favorite canon character — their love interest, illegitimate child, never-before-mentioned sister, etc. Other than that, the canon characters are quickly reduced to awestruck cheerleaders, watching from the sidelines as Mary Sue outstrips them in their areas of expertise and solves problems that have stymied them for the entire series.
source: tv tropes

charlie essentially being robbie thompson’s surrogate, to her flaming red hair, to her ever changing names and multiple identities, her uncanny prowess in everything from hacking to physical fighting, lack of any character flaws, her dramatic backstory, the fact that the winchesters just dote on her constantly and adopt her as their sister, the fact that anyone (and it’s funny how this extends to real life fan interactions) who dislikes charlie immediately catches flak, how she’s unbelievably close to dean and the “never-before-mentioned sister” of the boys, and finally, the fact that charlie time and again comes in to do the research and the fighting while the winchesters are reduced to cheerleaders who suddenly are unable to perform the tasks they could perform to perfection before– it’s all the description of a textbook mary sue. and that’s misogyny, because a female can and should be written as something more than a cliche tv trope that is considered to be derogatory.

death is fair, and this is true more so than ever on supernatural. death is fair because it is unfair to everyone. death does not spare anybody. instead of obsessing over the fact that your favorite character died a horrible death, realize that charlie being alive but still being written like she was some one-dimensional cartoon would do her no good, and it would be no more “awesome representation of females” than her being dead right now. realize that what is truly unfair in storytelling is not death, but bad storytelling itself. charlie was deprived of complexity and realness. that’s what is unfair.

To Charlie fans, you’re speaking a language they don’t understand. You hit the nail on the head.

Well, Death By Stupidity™ is unfair. Because it’s bad writing all over again.

Other than that, though, I couldn’t more. Great post!
