She stopped to take in the ambience of the house. It was eerily quiet, and it was still dark. The staircase almost looked like sharp teeth to her. It spiralled down to the ground floor, resembling the pit of an abyss.
All of a sudden, she saw movement in the corner of her eye.
“It’s nothing and no one is home but Thomas and me. It’s just me and Thomas,” she reminded herself in a shaky whisper.
“He’s asleep and I’m awake. There’s nothing to be afraid of.”
There was a loud groan that came from the heart of the house that made her jump.
“Wrong, little girl. This house is very much awake and you have everything to be afraid of!”

It’s funny. This week one of the memes I’ve seen repeated talks about how some fanfictions are just as good as the books put out by NY. This is one. This story blew me away. Based on Crimson Peak which was a fantastic film (anything by Guillermo del Toro is) it was part of my Halloween challenge.
The author told a sexy, thrilling story with all the old-world charm and panache of a Bronte sister. There’s a reference to the main character meeting Thomas before our story started and I was a little lost there but that was just my selfish wish for more most likely.
The sensual scene here is stylish and subtle. Elegant. I know from experience it’s hard to write a sensual scene that isn’t filled with expletives, explicit names for parts, and the gritty thrown-down of modern sex. It’s great if you can insert some emotion in there, some super sexy line of dialogue. I really appreciate a sex scene that’s completely tailored for a given story - not a scene you can pluck out of one story and put in another. That’s what I found here. I read it twice just so I could appreciate it.
While this story was based around Crimson Peak, the author did her own take on it and the ending for me (I love ghost stories) was perfect. I loved the whole work. If you love ghost stories too, historical romances, or just superlative writing, please check this out. 🙏💕🙏
