Cary Grant with Jean Simmons at the 1957 Academy Awards.  He had promised Ingrid Bergman he would stand by in case she won for her performance in Anastasia.  She won, defeating both Katharine Hepburn and Deborah Kerr and, as he collected her Oscar for her, Cary Grant declaimed to the audience: ‘Dear Ingrid, wherever you are in the world, we, your friends, want to congratulate you, and may you be as happy as we are for you.'  Their friendship, which had always been close, was even more firmly cemented by his gallant speech.

While she played the original Eliza Dolittle in the Broadway musical “My Fair Lady”, Audrey Hepburn played the part in the movie “My Fair Lady”. The studio executives did not want Andrews because she hadn’t had any experience in film and thought Hepburn would be the better choice. When winning the best actress Golden Globe in 1965 for Mary Poppins, she displayed her cheekiness when she drolly quipped “I’d like to thank Jack Warner for making this possible.” Had she been cast by Warner Bros. in My Fair Lady, she would not have been available for Mary Poppins.
