Cary Grant with Jean Simmons at the 1957 Academy Awards. He had promised Ingrid Bergman he would stand by in case she won for her performance in Anastasia. She won, defeating both Katharine Hepburn and Deborah Kerr and, as he collected her Oscar for her, Cary Grant declaimed to the audience: ‘Dear Ingrid, wherever you are in the world, we, your friends, want to congratulate you, and may you be as happy as we are for you.' Their friendship, which had always been close, was even more firmly cemented by his gallant speech.
