Why I think Axel/Lea is an amazing character.
Okay so I read this and it really struck home... because it was nothing but the truth. ____________________________________________________________________________
While he’s not ever the main focus of a Kingdom Hearts game, he his there, and he is important. He’s one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever come to know, one of the most real anyway. He’s a fan favorite, but it never seems like he is for the right reasons. Many people just find him sexy, or just enjoy him for the ship of he and Roxas, or for his catch phrase of course, but he’s so much more.
As Lea in Birth By Sleep, he is a somebody, someone with a heart, and he appears to be really good, if not best friends with Isa, Saix’s somebody, which seems to fall apart when they become Nobodies. That’s one best friend gone. Lea also seemed like a very light hearted, care free kid then, which contrasts to the most serious, dark Axel, and later Lea.
Axel makes friends with Roxas, and they become the best of friends (we’re not even going to really mention Xion because she’s forgotten.). Axel jumps through many, many hoops for Roxas and Xion because he cares about them, he has to keep them from killing each other, and where does this get him? Xion forgotten, and Roxas gone. Axel is left alone. Then he’s ordered to capture Roxas, who doesn’t even remember Axel, or destroy him. Now that’s not really something anyone wants to do to their best friend. Then Roxas merges with Sora, which makes it so Roxas really is gone. Can you imagine what it must be like to look at Sora and see those blue eyes and see those of your best friend’s and have to remeber everything that you’ve gone through?
Axel turns sides and goes as far to sacrafice himself to save you in the hopes to see Roxas again, but to no avail.
*Spoilers!* In Dream Drop Distance he comes back, a somebody this time, back to Lea and goes on to learn how to weild a keyblade, not an easy task for someone not chosen surely? He swoops in and saves the day just in time to keep Sora from being turned into a Xehanort, and is attacked by his former friend Isa who you know there is no hope for now.
Axel/Lea has lost just about everything, regained something to only have it slip through his fingers again, but never stops, he never gives up. No matter what follows him from his past, no matter what sadness he’s had to deal with, he presses on and perservers. I think very highly of that, if I were him, I’m sure I’d spiral into a depression and not know what to do with myself. He’s also made a come back from the wrong he’s done and really fits in much better with the good guys.
