Happy Hobbit Day! (I almost forgot and it's technically well into the 23rd where I am right now, but I haven't gone to bed yet since waking up on the 22nd, so we'll say it counts.)

I think if Boromir had survived he should be allowed special permissions to go into the Shire to see his friends in their native habitat after everything is over.

I’ve been too busy to draw anything for today, so in lieu of our usual art post, here’s a sticker in honor of Hobbit Day!

Happy Hobbit Day!

When I initially planned to make this cake, I was going to try and replicate the cake @frodo-with-glasses drew for Hobbit Day.

And then, Small Child asked to help me. And I wanted to say, “No. I don’t want your help decorating this one. Because I’m going to post pictures of it. And I want it to look nice.”

But then I realized that I was not having a very hobbit-like attitude! What better way to share Hobbit Day with my little ones than baking and decorating a cake to celebrate the birthday of my favorite fictional character of all time?

Of course, once Small Child was helping, Smaller Child wanted in on the fun. Even Smallest Child, with her chubby, clumsy baby hands, got to participate. I helped a bit with smoothing the frosting, but most of the piping was done by Small Child. The Russian piping tip flowers were Smaller Child’s contribution (with some help from Mama), and Smallest Child helped me put the letters in.

So did this turn out like I originally planned? No. But I got to make something with my curly headed babes, and that was far more fun, far more important.

I’m going to begin reading FotR to Small Child tomorrow. And I think letting him help decorate our Hobbit Day cake really got him in the mood to listen to his Mama’s favorite story for the first time.

MOMBOARD THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL

THE STORY BEHIND IT MAKES IT EVEN BETTER

Happy hobbit day, from my fellowship to yours 💚

"May the Shire be forever unwithered" is the perfect quote for Hobbit Day! Happy September 22, and happy birthday, Bilbo and Frodo (both with glasses 🤓) ~meg

Happy birthday to Frodo and Bilbo, indeed, and a happy Hobbit Day to you, Meg! Let's celebrate our favorite bespectacled Bagginses together! 💚

And in case y'all haven't seen it yet, go read Meg's Hobbit Day poem!!

So I haven’t asked any of these yet because I’m historically bad at ask games and remembering what’s already been asked, but I love this game even so. How about any three questions you haven’t yet been asked with Frodo and Bilbo? I just *clenches fist* love them so much!

HAPPY HECKING HOBBIT DAY YOU DWEEBS!! 8-D

I'm so glad you asked this, Merian, because it is marvelously timely! (Even if I did have to jump the line a bit to get to it but SHUT UP IT'S THE BOYS' BIRTHDAY LET 'EM HAVE THEIR SPOTLIGHT)

The only other ask there's been so far for Frodo and Bilbo was this one, when heckin-music-dork asked for 3, 5, 10, and 13. I know you asked me to just pick out three of the ones that haven’t been asked yet, but—

Well. Since when was I ever one for restraint?? :-3

ALL ABOARD THE BAGGINS TRAIN, CHOO-CHOO, SUCKERS

1. "When I think they became friends"

Presumably Bilbo was present for much of Frodo's childhood; mostly to visit Drogo and Primula, at first, and later to check up on their son specifically after they were gone. I'm sure little Frodo always looked up to strange and adventurous Uncle Bilbo with all his amazing stories, and Bilbo was just happy to have a willing audience.

2. "My favorite scene of them"

4. "My favorite thing about them"

Adoptive relationship. Cute, healthy, wholesome, funny, unconditionally loving, adoptive relationship, front and center in the bedrock of this story for everyone to see like it's no big deal, cute, heckin', cute, sweet little, cute, frick—

6. "A scene with them that I want to rewrite/change in some way"

I don't have a specific scene in mind but if these two idiots don't tell each other "I love you" in plain words before the book ends I will sue

7. "What makes me like their relationship"

CUTE, HECKIN', CUTE—

8. "Who I think is the 'crazier' one"

Bilbo, easily, by nature of being Bilbo. It's not Frodo who's the Mad Baggins.

9. "Would I change anything about their relationship?"

Mmmn more open communication maybe?? Bilbo left without even saying goodbye. But then it wouldn't really be Bilbo, so. He's kind of allergic to sincerity and feelings. It's okay; Frodo's sweet enough to make up for the both of them.

11. "Which one of the friends can I relate to more?"

Probably Frodo, just by nature of him being more bookish and introverted than Bilbo seems to be. But maybe I'll turn out a bit more like Bilbo when I'm older and have ceased to give much of a hoot about anything :-D

12. "A word to describe them"

C U T E okay wait we gotta be serious now

I'm gonna go with serendipitous, adj: "occurring or discovered by chance in a happy or beneficial way."

There were a lot of seeming coincidences that led up to Frodo and Bilbo's relationship becoming what it is. Bilbo just happened to find the Ring; Frodo's parents just happened to drown; Bilbo just happened to be pestered by those insufferable Sackville-Bagginses and needed an heir to ward them off; Frodo just happened to be the one who inherited the Ring; and he, happily, just happened to be the kind of person who had the moral fiber needed to carry a thing of deadly evil to its destruction and save the world.

Imagine if just one of those details hadn't lined up perfectly. All of Middle Earth would be lost. Tolkien would probably call it "eucatastrophe" or something like that; I, personally, call things like that "mini-miracles".

14. "If I can picture them to be more than just friends"

They ARE more than just friends! They're family. C-:

15. "If I would want to be friends with them"

Boy.

Heckin'.

WOULD I EVER 8-D
