More Reading Thoughts: “Homeward Bound”

  • The irony of reading this while I’m sitting in the airport waiting to leave on my trip is not lost on me lol
  • Aww, poor Frodo :-C That’s downright cruel, having to cross the Ford again on the same day he was stabbed in the shoulder.
  • And he hurries past Weathertop and can’t even look at it! D-: Someone comfort my boy
  • Ahhh, so this is where the movies got the idea for it to be raining when they arrived in Bree
  • “Do you think you killed him with that apple, Sam?” “I’m not so hopeful, Mister Pippin.” PFFFT
  • Butterbur rushing out with a cudgel in his hand because Nob wasn’t specific LOLOL
  • Butterbur: “Just spare me half an hour to talk.” Narrator: Three hours later…
  • The hobbits, realizing in retrospect that they’d been wearing armor the whole time and that is Very Strange: “Oops”
  • Sam: “Oh for Pete’s sake THE KING. IS. STRIDER.” Butterbur: “8-O 8-O 8-O SAYETH WHAAAAT??”
  • I love Butterbur’s simple perspective on everything. “Well, kings and wars and elves and the lot are none of my concern, I just want to be left alone in peace.”
  • Butterbur: “Nob! Now what does that remind me of?” Merry: “Not another letter you’ve forgotten, I hope.” HJSKFDKHSJFJ MERRY 🤣🤣🤣
  • YOU SASSY SON OF A BRANDYBUCK I LOVE YOU
  • This is why Merry is very quickly becoming my favorite hobbit. Intelligent, sarcastic little turd. He’s the best. :-D
  • BIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLL 8-D
  • BILL THE PONY I LOVE YOUUUUU
  • And now Frodo can say he’s writing a book without lying!!
  • Someone: “A song!” Everyone else: 😡 Frodo: 😳😬🫣
  • I’m loving the suspense about what’s happening in the Shire. It all builds slowly, one clue after another, until you really start to get an inkling that something is very wrong.
  • (And then of course Gandalf goes and spoils the surprise but we’re gonna ignore that)
  • “You are grown up now. Grown indeed very high…” Yeah especially Merry and Pippin
  • Gandalf’s metaphor of two old rocks having a chat lol
  • Frodo: “I wish I could see Bombadil again. I hope he’s okay.” Gandalf: “Trust me, he’s fine. And as usual, he couldn’t give less of a damn.”
  • Merry: “It seems almost like a dream that has slowly faded.” Frodo: “Not to me. To me it feels more like falling asleep again.”
  • Mmmmn I’m gonna be chewing on that for a while. That’s so poignant, and says so much about their personalities and how they view their adventure, but I can’t quite put my finger on it yet…

Nooooooooo the Best non-Fellowship Fellowship would be Faramir, Eowyn, Theoden, Eomer, Galadriel, Elrond, Quickbeam, and then of course Beregond and Bergil. <3 (also can you talk about some headcanons about what those dynamics would look like?)

LOL your Fellowship is far more blue-blooded than mine, anon 🤣

That’s just the thing tho! The moment you include any of the nobility from Gondor or Rohan, you have to include all of them. If you pick Faramir, then you also have to pick his wife, and if you pick Eowyn then you also have to pick her uncle and her brother, and all of the sudden that’s nearly half of your Fellowship gone and you’ve lost several slots that could be filled by different people with more unique perspectives.

Now of course if the nobility is your favorite part of LotR—as, I presume, it is for you—then this is the opposite of a problem. For you, this is the perfect Fellowship! But if I only have one day to hang out with nine characters from this story (which aren’t the main four hobbits, who’d be my first pick), I’d have three objectives:

  1. Make sure my personality would actually gel with the personality of the selected character
  2. Make sure the selected character’s personality will gel with all the others (or at least with one or two of them, so they don’t feel lonely)
  3. Diversify the perspectives at the table and maximize my socializing profits

(Did I overthink this?? Yes. Yes I hecking did.)

Which brings me to the headcanons for the character dynamics. Your Fellowship is two-thirds packed with nobility of some kind; and then there’s Beregond, Bergil, and Quickbeam. Assuming the entire conversation doesn’t just turn into everyone being struck near speechless by the ethereal beauty and wisdom of Galadriel—she tends to have that effect on people—the likeliest thing that would happen is some sort of an international diplomatic meeting, with all the heads of state talking shop about running their separate kingdoms and territories, and the Elves possibly dropping some ancient wisdom along the way. Beregond and Bergil would end up serving the others—because Faramir is there, and that’s Beregond’s boss—and…I’m not entirely sure what Quickbeam would end up doing, really. He kinda seems like an outlier. But I’m sure he’d get along well enough with the Elves.

If being in the room while all that is going on sounds fun to you, all the more power to you! But I, personally, would be bored out of my brain, which is why I selected the Fellowship that I did.

Headcanons for those interpersonal character dynamics will be under the cut because this has gotten long enough already.

This isn't a specific number of friendship ask (though kind of related to "would you be friends with them"): if you could pick a "Fellowship" of nine non-Fellowship members from LotR to hang out with for a day, who would you choose? :D ~meg

GAAAASP oh man I completely misread this the first time, you said NON-Fellowship members!! Heckin’! Okay this is gonna be FUN 🤩

First pick goes to Beregond and Bergil, obviously. Gotta have my husband and my son. Then Bilbo, for the Stories and the Sass.

I feel like it would be fun to hang out with Treebeard—all hail King Tree!—but I almost wonder if his slowness would dominate all conversation and leave no room for the others to be themselves, so I’ll go with Quickbeam. He’s got fun stories, and he’s “hasty” enough to not bore all the non-Ents.

Do non-speaking creatures count?? (I ask, as if you have any way of answering this before I publish the post.) I’m gonna assume the answer is “yes” and add Bill the Pony and Shadowfax. Because who wouldn’t want to spend time with Best Pony and King Horse??

That’s six…I need three more.

From the Elves: Glorfindel! Because Glorfindel! He is noble and light-hearted and joyful even in the greatest peril and doubtlessly has amazing stories. (And Asfaloth would probably come with him! I’m sure he’d get along splendidly with Shadowfax.)

From the Dwarves: Gimli is off-limits, so Gloin! Grandpa Dwarf who can tell us all about the exciting things happening in Dale. And he can offer corrections when Bilbo grossly exaggerates his stories, as he is prone to do.

And finally…(oof this is a really difficult decision uhhh….)

HAHAHA okay I was gonna say Theoden—because Dad VibesTM—but now I think it’s even more hilarious to say Butterburr, because all of the sudden I’m imagining this menagerie of various peoples of Middle Earth—including two or three equines, a tree, and one modern girl in blue jeans—rocking up one day to the Prancing Pony and asking for dinner.

I’m seeing drinks for all the grown-ups, and fresh-pressed juice for Bergil and me—because he is a Child and I have alcohol poisoning issues LOL—and the finest apples and straw for Bill and Shadowfax, and a long draught of rainwater for Quickbeam, and then a good long night of tales and songs and laughter, until the moon is high and Beregond carries a fully dead-to-the-world Bergil to bed, and Quickbeam steps away to have a sleep standing in the nearby field, and the rest of us slowly trickle away to our own rooms.

That would be just. ✨Magical.✨ I’d probably pass out on the spot. (And not from the alcohol because I didn’t have any 🤣🤣) Thank you for this ask, Meg!! It is absolutely splendid and I love how your mind works!

(And now I’m asking all of YOU GUYS: Who would be in your Fellowship for the day??)
