Hi! Do you know of any fics that focus on Ron and Harry being platonic soulmates, but with canon pairings, so Hermione and Ginny are still the love of their lives? I just hate seeing their bond brushed aside and diminished in favour of romantic relationships in fic. Platonic love is important too

Hey anon! What an excellent request. I wasn’t sure if you meant soulmates as in a soulmate AU or not, but sadly none of those exist that I could find. What I did find were several lovely fics focusing on Harry and Ron’s friendship. If you’re looking for something else, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Ron and Harry, after the Dursleys talk to Rita Skeeter. This is just such a lovely piece of writing. So soft and powerful at the same time, with a very clear love for the characters.

Ron realizes Harry has sacrificed himself in the final battle. I fully agree with the author that we need a better glimpse of the reaction to Harry going in to the woods at the end of DH and they have provided us an absolutely beautiful fic to remedy it.

5 aspects of Ron Weasley. Listen, I tried really hard to find my favorite quote from this fic to post but I honestly couldn’t choose. This is beautifully written and almost lyrical in style. As far as I’m concerned, this is Ron canon.

“Ron is twelve when he hears that complete and utter twat Ernie Macmillan insult his best friend. Or: Ron's first fight is done in the name of protecting Harry's honor.” So well-done and carefully written.

Ron may be young but he sees when Harry is hurting. Short and very sweet.

The Weasleys bring Harry home.

“It feels as though he's slipping into a space they've all stepped aside to make for him. Like he belongs at their lopsided kitchen table, sipping carefully out of a chipped mug too big for his thin hands, looking around at the lot of them with the whole world in his eyes.”

so, this is what i’ve done all day apparently

this is a fantastic guide, A++

Night Watch is my personal favorite, too. Got me into the rest of the series. Also, I highly recommend Monstrous Regiment (you want feminism, here it is) and any of the Death books. Like, any. Death is one of the best characters in the Discworld.

(Word of warning: Those like me who have a corporal punishment squick, watch out. Sir Terry did have one particular blind spot there and he WILL set that off. Only once or twice a book, generally, but still. Just so you’re warned.)

The first book that really made me really like the series was Small Gods (2nd or 3rd book I read). I think Reaper Man is the first REALLY amazing one. My all time favourite is Night Watch, Going Postal is a close second.

For anyone who’s been generally vaguely interested in checking out the Discworld canon but daunted by the number of books or confused where to start

When I first read these, I read them In Publication Order, because I was that way as a teenager. (Mind, Interesting Times was the last one, when I started reading them.)

Do not read Discworld in the order I did.

In particular, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic are very good and funny books, but (1) have many parts that are Fair For Their Time, and (2) have a lot of straight-up parody that is likely to fall flat if you didn’t grow up reading ‘70s and ‘80s heroic fantasy. (There’s an extended Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser gag. And a key plot element of both books is a Vancian spell-casting joke.)

If you want to know if the series is for you, I’d recommend starting with Interesting Times, Feet of Clay, or Small Gods. These are still fairly early, so no particular spoilers, but they’re late enough that Sir Terry had gotten very good at writing them. You can go back and read the first two Watch books or the earlier Rincewind books later.

(Going Postal, Thud!, and I Shall Wear Midnight are my personal favorites; Reacher Gilt is the best villain ever. Read Raising Steam last–IMO it’s noticeably unfinished. And you don’t want to start the Watch books later than Feet of Clay–you want to watch Vimes grow.)

(Oh–and the Amazing Maurice is a riff on the pied piper story and also reminds me of The Secret of NIMH. If you were annoyed by all the NIMH sequels you will love it.)

My lovely kiddo @lyra-lost-in-space got me Equal Rites and Wyrd Sisters to start and I’m delving onward in Colour of Magic right now and gonna hodge podge however I feel like it - and bounce back and forth on my annual read-through of Wheel of Time (I need to freshen up from book 4 through 12 right now)

on a scale of 1 to john oliver commissioning a competing picture book about mike pence’s rabbit with a storyline about same sex marriage and democracy and tolerance, releasing that book a day before the release of mike pence’s picture book, and then donating proceeds from the book to the trevor project and aids united, how (righteously) petty are you

Guys! Now is the time to act!

Due to Hurricane Irma and Maria, Puerto Rico has been left devastated leaving it’s citizens without food, safe water, clothing, medical supplies, and shelter. Relief efforts are being done all over the country, but there is still so much that can be done. President Trump sees Puerto Ricans as lazy and asking for handouts, well I see them as American citizens and human beings in need of our help– and I hope you do too.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with many other artists like Marc Anthony, Camila Cabello, Dessa, Alex Lacamoire,  Luis Fonsi, Jennifer Lopez, Anthony Ramos, and so many more, have come together to produce Almost Like Praying, a benefit song aimed to raise money and awareness for Puerto Rican relief efforts. The song is available on Apple Music, Itunes, Spotify, and Youtube where you can watch, share, and contribute whatever you can.

Want to do more? Donate to the Hispanic Federation, a non-profit founded by  Luis Miranda in 19990, where 90% of the proceeds will go to those in need. There is also an Almost like Praying collection on Tee Rico, a family and community oriented merchandise shop created by Lin-Manuel Miranda (the Miranda’s are the best js), that will be giving 100% of the proceeds to Puerto Ricans in need.

And get out and get active! I can’t even begin to name all the groups and organizations– big and small– all over the country that are doing their part to donate and help out. Check Facebook groups, use word out mouth, look online– commit yourself to doing at least one thing that will help our people.

Every little thing counts so please please, do your part and lend a helping hand! I believe in you! Get out there and make it happen!

New Things Happening

Hey friends! In the fall I will be moving across the country in pursuit of new (definitely bigger, hopefully better) things and anticipate having significantly less free time. Because of this, I want to start tentatively reaching out to my wonderful audience to see if anyone might have an interest in helping/co-running/managing this blog. If you like what I post, have similar taste, and think this would be fun (it is!), please message me and we can chat!

Reading amazing fanfiction, then forgetting to bookmark it

enter this into the Google search

site:<url of site where you read the fic> <a line you remember from the fic or character names plus a unique detail>

for example:

site:http://archiveofourown.org/ Todd Margo pedicure

Google will search only AO3 and tell you which pages contain the words Todd Margo and pedicure.

“Women aren’t baby-making factories!” Okay I hate to be ~that~ anatomy nerd, but if you think of the human body as a factory, the female body is literally a baby making factory! From the way our organs are set up, to our hormones, and even our external parts, our bodies are geared toward baby making. So yes, women are baby making factories 😁

Fuck you.

@theworld-onherhips did you flunk high school biology or what?

The female reproductive system is actually extremely hostile towards embryos

Our species have hemichorial placentas, designed to weed out all but the fittest embryos. We develop thick endometrial linings from a ridiculously young age in order to aggressively protect ourselves from what is essentially a ruthless parasite that is literally sucking our blood; every time we have a period our body is shedding blood and tissue so that it can efficiently eject embryos deemed unworthy, which is most of them

On top of that, there is only a 12 hour window each menstrual cycle during which we can conceive - over the course of a year, there is less than a week of time in which we are in danger of conceiving. Which is why it is perfectly normal for a healthy couple to go 12 months or more without getting pregnant.

The way our hormones are calibrated is to protect US, not the fetus. The wider pelvic girdle, extra fat, etc. is about minimizing the damage a fetus can do to the pregnant person

I love getting biology lessons that also happen to shit on misogynistic anti-choicers.

Also, I don’t know a lot about factories, but spending 9 months to make (typically) just one product and then not knowing when you can make another one sounds like a really poor business model.

Also what we consider carrying “to term” would kill pretty much any other creature on earth? Babies are not fully developed when they come out, they’re helpless to predators and can’t even stumble their way to a food source like most baby animals.

Scientists believe to “fully grow” a human, it would actually take 18-21 months, to equate the development of other primates’ babies.

The female body literally cannot carry a child to full development. It would kill us. We’re more like… game developers at Ubisoft— we kick the product out before it’s ready and hope we can work out the bugs to make them playable as they get older.
