i think it’s important to note that americans get a lot of criticism for only knowing english, but i would say that learning a second language in the united states is a privilege. unless you have the opportunity to live in an area with a lot of speakers of a language besides english, it is hard to get practice. you have to have time to put into learning a second language if you’re not learning it in an environment where people are speaking the language. you have to probably buy a textbook, maybe a tutor, maybe a college course. the internet has surely made this easier, but i still think that americans usually have to go through a lot of hoops to learn a language because most of us are not presented with an opportunity to practice a language in our daily lives. if you’re lucky and have the money, you can visit the country where they speak the language natively or stay there for a while, but not many people have this opportunity.
