Three cats died after their owners used an anti-inflammatory cream used to treat arthritis. The Food and Drug Administration warns to keep drugs away from pets; a tiny bit can be toxic.

Important for spoonies with cats! Creams with Flurbiprofen are fatal to cats. Brands that use this chemical (Not a complete list): Myoflex Traumeel Capzasin If you have cats, check your pain relieving cream for this, and keep them from ingesting it, please!

Oh no! Boosting for all cat owners.

All NSAIDs are toxic to cats - this includes ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), Aleve (naproxen), Voltaren – which also comes in a gel form – (diclofenac), Mobic (meloxicam), aspirin… If you’re unsure, ask your pharmacist or check drugs.com.

This still blows my mind

I will happily delete this if I’m derailing or taking away from the original message (initially I put this in the tags, but a friend asked me to reblog as text)

If you don't want to pursue an autism or adhd diagnosis and you have access to a doctor or therapist you can get them to write you a note attesting to a symptom of your neurodivergence (rather than naming the condition itself) and stating the need for accommodation.

It's something my therapist told me about when we were still working in offices. I have sensory processing issues and on multiple occasions the noise in my office was so bad I broke the skin on my hand clenching my fist.

This work-around of course won't fix structural ableism and relies on you having access to a doctor/therapist who actually gives a crap, so still might only help a couple of folks.

Thats a good add on

PSA For Non-Jews:

Yom HaShoah is a SPECIFICALLY JEWISH holiday that’s SPECIFICALLY about the Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

This year, it starts at sundown on April 17. The date on Pope Greg’s calendar moves around because it’s fixed date is 27th of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. Aside from the mourning day’s date, you can tell it’s a SPECIFICALLY JEWISH day because “Shoah” refers specifically to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Similarly, Porajmos refers SPECIFICALLY to the Romani victims.

Don’t “all lives matter” this holiday.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is January 27. THAT is the day for ALL the victims.

Source of mercy: Forever enfold them in the embrace of Your wings; secure their souls in eternity. Adonai: they are Yours. They will rest in peace. Amen.

Text: PSA to anyone with a tree nut allergy who frequents starbucks. We have a new drink called the pistachio cold foam cold brew and our pistachio sauce not only has real pistachio in it, the syrup sticks inside the blender and will 100% not fully wash off with the rinsers we use (its just water). I highly suggest if you want a cold foam drink during Jan-March you request it done in a sanitized blender to lower the chance of having a reaction if you are at risk.

Some baristas are also suggesting holding off on frapps as well (reddit thread)

Also highlighting one comment:

We do use almond milk, and people can request an almond milk cold foam, so if someone has a bad nut allergy, they should be requesting sanitized smallwares, no matter what they are ordering, any time of the year.

You deserve software that doesn’t hate you, switch to Firefox <3 🦊

Other good extensions:

Privacy Possum is an anti-tracking extension that not only blocks commercial trackers, it also fucks with them by generating nonsense data.

Forget Me Not is a cookie management tool that lets you choose whether/how sites can store cookies on your computer on a site-by-site basis.

Bypass Paywalls Clean does exactly what it says: allows you to bypass paywalls on news sites and the like.

SponsorBlock uses crowd-sourced data to block sponsored segments on YouTube videos. Now you never have to hear about NordVPN or Raycon ever again!

Breakthrough Twitter Login Wall is another “what it says on the tin” extension. It stops Twitter from trying to force you to log in, so you can browse anonymously in peace.

Hey guys!

Kaizu and I will be participating in the Etsy strike coming up from April 11th to the 18th!

Our shop will be put on vacation mode so sales will not be possible.

The Etsy strike is to protest the recent increase in fees. Etsy has announced record profits but still increased fees by 30% and have over the last few years been making the site inhospitable to small creators.

Please help support this strike by not buying anything from Etsy during the week of April 11th.

Thank you!

Yeah, I see a lot of shark positivity posts on my dash these days and I really appreciate that. But I think something is being left out of the message so I’m just gonna say that:

  • YES, Sharks are not bloodthirsty monsters. They only do what they do because they are instinctively driven to do so.
  • NO, sharks are not your friends. They are not sea-puppies, gentle babies, or whatever BS anthropomorphic “cute” term you want to use to describe them.
  • YES, you are more likely to be killed by falling coconuts and any number of improbable circumstances than you are to be killed by a shark attack,
  • NO, sharks are not “harmless”. They are apex predators of their habitats and deserve to be treated with the same respect that you would give to a wild lion, bear, or wolf. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT LIKELY TO ATTACK YOU DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY WON’T. ACCIDENTS CAN ALWAYS HAPPEN, AND A SHARK’S PATIENCE IS NOT LIMITLESS.
  • YES, you should take every precaution to prevent a shark from “test-biting” you.
  • NO, a test-bite is not just a harmless consequence of shark curiosity. A TEST-BITE CAN KILL YOU. Just because sharks generally release people after the first nip and don’t make any effort to eat them does not mean that the bite is somehow any less deadly. You will bleed out in the water if the wound is bad enough.
  • YES, sharks are endangered and unfairly demonised and worthy of our support.
  • NO, that does not mean that anthropomorphising them and spreading false information is okay.

Please support sharks, but please, for the love of god, give them the respect they deserve when you do so. YOU ARE NOT HELPING THEM BY ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO SWIM RIGHT INTO THEIR JAWS.

Your annual Shark Week PSA. Sharks are incredible, thrilling creatures but spreading the idea that they are all harmless or interested in eusocial behavior with humans does them no favors.

Pro tip: if you are ever in a situation where a shark has chosen to test bite you, punch it in the eyes. I know its mean, but its a sure fire way to get the shark to release you, and the sooner you get away the better your chances are of survival. You do this because the eyes are its one weakspot, and it will back off before it gets angry enough to attack again, especially if youve blinded it; but that being said, its safest (considering) if you are relatively close to some kind of boat or raft, as sharks navigate with sense of smell generally before sight. Hitting it in the eye and hurting it in some capacity will dissorient it, and make it let go long enough to get out of the water if that is available nearby.

However, refrain from doing so before it bites, while not all sharks are immediatly aggressive, there is some that will be because they are, You know, Apex predators and all that.

If the shark has stripes resembling a tiger (its not super visable, but if its close enough to bite, youll know) do not anger it. I repeat, do NOT anger it. Tiger sharks are naturally one of three most aggressive sharks, and will attack unprovoked. (no, sharks are not normally aggressive, but this shark as well as great whites and bull sharks are known to be extrememly aggressive even unprovoked) In fact, if there is even a possibility that there is a tiger shark near by, if one has been spotted even a mile away, dont go swimming. -smae goes for the other two. Tiger sharks will eat anything- known to eat trash and glass and anything it can. That can include you.

If you spot a shark in a fresh water area that shouldnt have sharks, it is probably a bull shark. And like its namesake it is aggressive. They have been known to swim upstream in the mississippi, Although, they are mostly found in coasts, rivers, and streams of nicoragua.

This weekend I was told a story which, although I’m kind of ashamed to admit it, because holy shit is it ever obvious, is kind of blowing my mind.

A friend of a friend won a free consultation with Clinton Kelly of What Not To Wear, and she was very excited, because she has a plus-size body, and wanted some tips on how to make the most of her wardrobe in a fashion culture which deliberately puts her body at a disadvantage.

Her first question for him was this: how do celebrities make a plain white t-shirt and a pair of weekend jeans look chic?  She always assumed it was because so many celebrities have, by nature or by design, very slender frames, and because they can afford very expensive clothing.  But when she watched What Not To Wear, she noticed that women of all sizes ended up in cute clothes that really fit their bodies and looked great.  She had tried to apply some guidelines from the show into her own wardrobe, but with only mixed success.  So - what gives?

His answer was that everything you will ever see on a celebrity’s body, including their outfits when they’re out and about and they just get caught by a paparazzo, has been tailored, and the same goes for everything on What Not To Wear.  Jeans, blazers, dresses - everything right down to plain t-shirts and camisoles.  He pointed out that historically, up until the last few generations, the vast majority of people either made their own clothing or had their clothing made by tailors and seamstresses.  You had your clothing made to accommodate the measurements of your individual body, and then you moved the fuck on.  Nothing on the show or in People magazine is off the rack and unaltered.  He said that what they do is ignore the actual size numbers on the tags, find something that fits an individual’s widest place, and then have it completely altered to fit.  That’s how celebrities have jeans that magically fit them all over, and the rest of us chumps can’t ever find a pair that doesn’t gape here or ride up or slouch down or have about four yards of extra fabric here and there.

I knew that having dresses and blazers altered was probably something they were doing, but to me, having alterations done generally means having my jeans hemmed and then simply living with the fact that I will always be adjusting my clothing while I’m wearing it because I have curves from here to ya-ya, some things don’t fit right, and the world is just unfair that way.  I didn’t think that having everything tailored was something that people did.

It’s so obvious, I can’t believe I didn’t know this.  But no one ever told me.  I was told about bikini season and dieting and targeting your “problem areas” and avoiding horizontal stripes.  No one told me that Jennifer Aniston is out there wearing a bigger size of Ralph Lauren t-shirt and having it altered to fit her.

I sat there after I was told this story, and I really thought about how hard I have worked not to care about the number or the letter on the tag of my clothes, how hard I have tried to just love my body the way it is, and where I’ve succeeded and failed.  I thought about all the times I’ve stood in a fitting room and stared up at the lights and bit my lip so hard it bled, just to keep myself from crying about how nothing fits the way it’s supposed to.  No one told me that it wasn’t supposed to.  I guess I just didn’t know.  I was too busy thinking that I was the one that didn’t fit.

I thought about that, and about all the other girls and women out there whose proportions are “wrong,” who can’t find a good pair of work trousers, who can’t fill a sweater, who feel excluded and freakish and sad and frustrated because they have to go up a size, when really the size doesn’t mean anything and it never, ever did, and this is just another bullshit thing thrown in your path to make you feel shitty about yourself.

I thought about all of that, and then I thought that in elementary school, there should be a class for girls where they sit you down and tell you this stuff before you waste years of your life feeling like someone put you together wrong.

So, I have to take that and sit with it for a while.  But in the meantime, I thought perhaps I should post this, because maybe my friend, her friend, and I are the only clueless people who did not realise this, but maybe we’re not.  Maybe some of you have tried to embrace the arbitrary size you are, but still couldn’t find a cute pair of jeans, and didn’t know why.

This post is one of those things that I will reblog every time it appears on my dash.  This is so important, and no one ever tells you about it.

I almost didn’t read this but then I did and I’m really glad that I did.

Super important

Tldr: The reason clothes never “looked right on you” is because models and celebrities always had their clothes tailored to fit them perfectly.

I love this post but it always frustrated me just a little because I can’t even afford to buy new clothes let alone get the clothes I have tailored. But then I remembered that a lot of things are easier to do than you think they will be, so here’s some resources on how to alter your own clothes!

Please read this, it’s an opportunity to learn about yourself, possibly a new skill and why it isn’t you, it’s the industry.

Every day i think about those black musicians whose songs were made into covers by white people and now everyone thinks that these are the originals. Youtube comment sections are full of people like "is this what it feels like to find out you're adopted?" instead of celebrating and promoting the original creators of the songs.

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

Little Eva - Loco-Motion

Martha & The Vandellas - Dancing in the Streets

James Ray - I've Got My Mind Set On You

Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog

Robert Knight - Everlasting Love

Erma Franklin - Piece of My Heart

The Family - Nothing Compares 2 U (written by Prince)

The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love

The Supremes - Keep Me Hanging On

The Top Notes - Twist and Shout

Lord Creator - Kingston Town

The Paragons - Tide is High

Commodores - Easy

And here's an entire playlist with songs by black artists covered by The Rolling Stones:

Some Holier-Than-Thou Fuck: "Dont shoplift, it inconveniences minimum wage workers and could get them fired :(((("

I once lost my entire paycheck to Loss Prevention when some clothes were stolen from a shop where I worked. I couldn't pay rent, I was in a huge situation over it, almost lost my fucking apartment / became homeless for a second time. Fuck all of you who think this way.

thats incredibly illegal you probably should have fought that

Absolutely hilarious that you think "fought that" doesn't directly translate to "get myself fired and then lose my paycheck anyway." Cute of you to still have that level pollyanna entitlement.

Friend, I say this as someone who has worked in hellscapes like that - it is 100% illegal for them to dock your pay, and unlike say, being fired for racial discrimination or sexism, you can prove it happened. There is a paper trail. And the wrongful dismissal case for them firing you over demanding your pay back would give you such an incredible case that you could make THOUSANDS through litigation. In my state, I know at least 10 firms that would do that pro bono. I know this shit is hard and employers are trash, but you absolutely DID and DO have recourse. Getting salty at fellow workers for pointing this out to you does not help anyone, including you. It's not "pollyanna entitlement" to tell you you have the right to fight for your wages. It is the store's job to account for and prevent shrinkage. Not the employees.

Avatar
cumaeansibyl

That litigation takes time so I understand why people don't want to be fired. You'll probably get a payout 3-5 years down the line but for now you're out of a job, and sometimes it's hard to find a new one quickly (I mean, not right this minute it isn't, but still).

In that case what you do is contact your state's department of labor, tell them you've had your wages stolen, and ask them how to proceed. They'll get the case going, and in the meantime you can start looking for a better job that won't fuck you over.

If the DOL notifies your shitty job of the investigation and they're stupid enough to fire you after that, then you tell the DOL that as well. Your payout's gonna go way up and in the meantime at least you had a head start on the job search.

Adding the direct link to the subject for my state of WA:

P.S. Attorneys are not actually just sitting around waiting to take on wage theft cases prop-bono, so the DoL is a great place to start.

So if there are any books you’ve had your eye on, consider supporting an indie bookstore through them this week!

The Philippines just got hit by the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in history

Yesterday, November 1, 2020, Typhoon Rolly (international name Goni) hit the central part of Luzon, Philippines.

Like the tweet said, it is the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit landfall in recorded history.

The typhoon has now passed, but the aftermath is bad. Houses destroyed, farmlands flooded, and many, many evacuees. If you would like to see what’s going on, check the hashtag #RollyPH on Twitter, there’s a lot, which brings me to the most important point

how you can help

You can donate to help relief operations.

There are many donation drives currently being circulated on Twitter, and you can find them by searching the #ReliefPH hashtag, here are just a few that I’ve found that have an option to donate through PayPal.

And there are many many more.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, a lot of people in my country are trying their absolute best to chip in and help those affected, but help from outside would definitely be something that could go a long way.

If you can’t donate, maybe a reblog could bring this post to people who could.

Thank you for reading. Stay safe and healthy, everybody.
