Calvin's parents decide to take a Hawai'ian vacation. They're not sure how much of it their son will tolerate but they would like to do at least a few things that involve sandy beaches and scenic cycling routes. They are therefore pleased when Calvin seems to make friends with a local girl about his own age and the two of them run off to play

Now, from Calvin's point of view what has happened is that he spotted actual aliens, and starts trying to bring this to the attention if the adults. But the tourists are like, "that's nice, go shoot 'em with your water gun, have a good time," and the locals are like, "yeah, they're an older couple who decided to retire here. Happens all the time." Eventually, it becomes clear that Spaceman Spiff is going to have to handle it himself.

From Lilo's point of view, Jumba and Pleakley are her gay uncles, do you mind? Calvin does mind, and so the two of them spend the rest of the afternoon terrorizing Kaua'i in the effort to destroy one another while the aliens alternate between bailing them out of trouble and attempting to escape.

Hobbes and Stitch, meanwhile, are calmly playing checkers and drinking non-alcoholic margaritas.

OP I’m sorry but the last sentence painted SUCH a vivid picture in my mind I had to draw it immediately.

I love how Stitch looks more like a stuffed animal then Hobbes does.

This is perfect.

I love Lilo And Stitch bc even though it makes me sad David just goes and blames what he thinks is a normal dog for making things worse for Nani and Lilo and it’s constantly funny to me

YOU DID THIS

Just so we know just exactly David was dealing with.

It honestly never occurred to me that Stitch could have been mistaken for a French Bulldog by everyone

I really have been just accepting that Lilo’s cover story “Stitch used to be a collie ‘til he got run over” as the story everyone accepted.

yeah in David’s defense, “Nani’s chaotic little sister brought a dog home and then immediately dyed the poor thing bright blue” is not an unreasonable assumption

[ID: Image one is a photo of a Blue French bulldog which someone is poking in the chin. Image two is an edit of the previous photo to make the dog look like Stitch, with Stitch placed beside him. With the dog now edited to have blue fur with light blue patches and more prominently pink ears, the presumed resemblance is understandable. End ID]

lilo and stitch did a better job at representing everything s*a tried to do with music and lilo isn’t even “““canon autistic”””

what lilo and stitch has that music does not:

  • neurotypical older sister having to parent her autistic-coded younger sister but she respects and validates her sister nonstop
  • good representation of an autistic child even if unintentional [see autistic people expressing how similar they are to her here- 1, 2, 3]
  • no white ppl in brownface
  • good music
  • decent filmmaking
  • autistic people who like it
  • aliens

anyway fuck s*a

- Has a strong yet subtle message on the effects tourism has on native Hawaiians

- Villain redemption

- A character coded to be lgbtq without being a stereotype

- a social worker who actually cares about the well-being of the child

- Found Family before it was cool

- A platonic love story which is rare for Disney where two misfits find solace in one another

- autistic coded child treated with respect//allowed to feel heavy emotions and act like a normal child without it being offensive or irritating

I’d argue TWO characters who are autistic-coded.

Lilo is what happens when you support your autistic child. Stitch is what happens when you don’t. Notice how he calms the fuck down and becomes able to weigh actions and consequences once there’s someone in his corner? He stops trying to destroy everything and focuses his energies on protecting the people who are protecting him (and Lilo, not everyone is onboard with Stitch yet). Up to that point he struggles to connect, and so he lashes out, instead.

Also, if memory serves me, the “this is my family” speech is the only time in the movie he speaks in complete sentences. When the movie came out, that was a major goal in autism work (and while today we know that communication may not mean verbal, it’s still hugely important). Finally, with people who love and support him, he’s able to learn to communicate, build a support network, and develop effective coping mechanisms.

anyone have that post that was like “NT writers are great at creating autistic characters but only when they aren’t trying to”

Every time I see this post it makes me think of Nani, after Lilo grows up and Nani finally gets to live for herself a bit. Gets to be a person rather than a mom before her time.

There’s a Stich doll in the second picture!

Omg, you're right😱😱

He is such an underrated character. He was a cinnamon role and just wanted to help the entire movie. No Hans bullshit, no pressuring her into a relationship, just love.

He gave support, he was patient, he was unconditionally kind, he accepted all the difficulties with child services and all the weird alien visitors with barely a blink. He dove into the ocean to rescue Stitch because Lilo was worried. And through it all, he proved that he was more than willing to do everything in his power to help these girls and make them smile, without any thought of a reward or being “owed” for his friendship.

Even his line at the end, when Nani thanks him for helping her find a job (”That’s okay. You can just date me and we’ll call it even.”), is delivered with a certain amount of humor, and his behavior throughout the rest of the film shows that he would still accept it if she turned him down. Because more than just liking Nani, he RESPECTS her.

David Kawena is the ultimate Disney prince.

You know what makes me the saddest about Lilo and Stitch?

When she gets kicked out of the dance class, she’s the only person we know for sure is native Hawaiian in her age bracket in the class.

There’s Myrtle, who is white, Elena who is white (f she’s the blonde one), Theresa who’s background is unclear, and Yuki who is implied, based on the name and the large Japanese population in Hawaii, to be Japanese.

She is taking a dance class of a dance traditional to her people.

And she is kicked out primarily because a white girl, Myrtle, is bullying her.

How fucking sad is that?

Dude.

This always got me about the movie. I always

wanted

to punch

myrtle

IN THE FACE AND EXISTENCE

Also, the hula dancing runs in the family, as we find out in the sequel that her mother was a dance champion. It’s clear in this scene that the deaths of her mother and father are still fresh in her mind and I think the dancing reminds her of her mother and happier times. Maybe they practiced together frequently? Idk, it’s just the vibe I get. That Lilo is there to do her mother proud, rather than to make friends and socialize like the others there.

Her face says it all. Look at how happy she is!

Everyone who liked this, everyone who validated this, you need to unlike it right NOW.

As a Native Hawaiian, I have a problem with this post.

A fucking big problem.

First off, Hawai'i is massively diverse. Massively. Almost no one is pure Hawaiian. The speculation that Lilo is at all pure or the only part Hawaiian is laughable. There’s a very very slim margin that she would be at all. Secondly, just because it’s “not confirmed” doesn’t mean those girls aren’t. There are thousands of Japanese-Hawaiian girls. Thousands, and thousands more of even more mixed races who are Hawaiian. My sister is a shade away from blonde, and as pale as snow white, and she is just as half-Hawaiian as I am - even though I look more “authentic”. I know many beautiful Hawaiian girls with clouds of red hair and creamy complexions from mixed bloodlines. If you want to get “authentic” and go off of Lilo’s appearance, to us locals, she looks half-Asian. She looks definitely hapa at best.

It angers me beyond all reason that this has reposts, reposts from people who don’t understand the Native Hawaiian culture, much less the culture that sprung from it which envelops our islands. You are reposting blind ignorance. Who are you to decide who looks more Hawaiian? Who are you people to assume our culture and that this girl takes it more seriously than the others? Because she gets a backstory?

The amazing thing about my culture, MY culture, is that hula opens its arms to all. All children here are welcome to it. It is passed on to them and their blood does not dictate their passion nor their eligibility. “Lilo is there to make her mother proud, rather than to make friends and socialize”. Do you have any idea what a halau is? You don’t, no, none of you do. You have no idea what a halau is. A halau is your family, a halau are your friends, your only social circle when you are fully dedicated. My mother IS one of the queens of hula who trained under Maiki Aiu and she still talks to her hula sisters daily. They were part of her life. It isn’t enough to just hula, or learn it, and put blinders on the sides of your head. If you don’t live it with your hula sisters and brothers, then your story is nothing. You go through motions and you tell no stories.

Don’t try for one moment, to make that scene out like it was Lilo being bullied by a white girl. Yes, Hawai'i is still being raped by the ideologies of white appropriation, but do not for one moment think that these girls may not be Hawaiian. Do not think for one moment that you have the right nor the knowledge to sweep onto the internet and start reposting like a fucking idiot about a culture and mixed bloodlines and races you don’t really understand aside from “the white man hurt them”. You damage people like my sister, like my cousins, all equally as proud and maka'ainana as I, simply because they don’t look like me.

You have no right to use this scene as commentary, because you have not even a shade of an idea of the damage you do with it.
