Man, in regards to the very old Spirk fandom, I have a deep respect for how pon farr has been discussed in fics. It’s not meant to be romantic, it’s meant to be violent and fierce and a complete lack of control. No wonder whenever I read a fanfic about Kirk trying to help Spock through it, Spock is always begging him to stay back and that he doesn’t want to hurt him. It’s THAT bad, that you lose all inhibition and all your biology is aimed towards is primal coupling. What makes the Spirk dynamic even better in these fics, though, is the complete trust Kirk has that Spock will not hurt him. Their love runs that deep, their souls entwine that much that Kirk knows even when Spock is nothing more than an animal bent on mating that he would never hurt his t’hy’la. And I’m a sucker for when after the deed is done, Spock begs forgiveness and pleads with Kirk to leave him be, because he is ashamed of the barbaric way he claimed his mate and made him sorer than a Klingon’s twisted arm socket after a marital disagreement. All of it has been brilliantly handled and carefully written since the 60’s, and each and every pon farr piece has always held that uncertainty and shame and fear, but especially, the deep running trust and love between two friends, brothers, and lovers.
