For the book ask game: 1, 18 und 22

Avatar

So sorry for the late answer 🙈🙈🙈

1. a book that is close to your heart

Too many honestly... So here a few of them 🙈Hectors Reise oder die Suche nach dem Glück (Le voyage d'Hector ou la recherche du bonheur) by François Lelord, Helden von Muddelerde (Middle Earth) by Chris Riddell, Wir beide Oskar,..für immer. Von der Kunst, einen Löwen verstecken zu müssen, den niemand sieht (OS to, Oskar... for evigt) by Bjarne Reuter, and Ein Drache in der Schultasche (Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher) by Bruce Coville.

18. your least favorite book ever

Uh, this is actually difficult. I didn't like Corpus Delicti by Juli Zeh when we had to read it in German classes.... Idk honestly since I don't keep books that I don't like so I can't even look into my book shelves to get some ideas 🙈

22. your favourite thriller

Those terrible people by Edgar Wallace, and A Ghost in the Machine by Caroline Graham. Both times not so much because of the thriller but more because both have characters in them that I like a lot 👉👈 and that get killed 😭

I can recommend the Flavia De Luce books tho (by Alan Bradley).

Hello,

First of all i am sorry if it may be diffcult so tw for the holocaust.

My late grandmother passed away four years ago

My late grandmother was a proud Jew holocuast survivor. One of the things that were natural to her was the speaking of multipal languages, including German which was her mother's tonge.

What would you recommend A. Going to Germany for the first time and B. The best way to learn German? I already know Hebrew, Russian and Yiddish, i jut want to honor her memory in the best way possible.

Thank you

Hi anon, sorry for the late answer, I was thinking about what best to recommend.

To answer your first question, I'd say it depends on what you want to see in Germany. Like, do you want to visit memorials and similar places for the Holocaust? Then Berlin is probably your best place to start/visit. There you find the biggest (?) memorial in Germany - here's the link to their website (in English) with the different memorials, exhibitions, news etc. Although that's obviously not the only memorial ("Mahnmal") for the victims of the Holocaust. You'll also find so-called "Stolpersteine" in many places in cities of Germany and several other european countries. Here's a website (in English) with more informations about them. Again, those are not the only memorials, if that's what you want to visit in Germany. Here's an article about several more places - it's in German tho but I'm sure if you put the link into Google translator it should be fine.

If you just want to visit sights or "famous" places in Germany, here are some other recommendations:

If you like castles and historic places, then Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria might be something for you ("Schloss" is castle). That or Schloss Sanssouci and its gardens in Potsdam near Berlin.

If you like to go hiking then the "Sächsische Schweiz" in Saxony or the "Elbsandsteingebirge" or the "Alpen" in the southern part of Bavaria close to the Austrian border might be something for you. The "Sächsische Schweiz"/"Elbsandsteingebirge" ("Gebirge" is mountains) has smaler mountains than Bavaria but they are liked by free climbers (?), while the "Alpen" (alps) are higher/better for longer hiking tours.

If you prefer big cities and shopping, Munich in Bavaria and Berlin are probably more for you. It's been a while since I've been to Munich but I read that the "Marienplatz" is a good starting point, as it's in the "Altstadt" (the historical part of a city - if you like historic places look out for the "Altstädte" of the cities that you visit - they often have buildings that have been there since Medieval Times), and it's also apparently the starting point of the part of the city for pedestrians/for shopping. If you like second-hand stuff there are a lot of small second-hand shops in Berlin and there's also a four-stories building, the "Humana Secondhand-Kaufhaus Friedrichshain" ("Kaufhaus" is department store). Here's a little more info about it (in German). If you prefer smaller cities with a pretty "Altstadt" Dresden or Görlitz in Saxony might be something for you. In Dresden you also find a cool interactive science museum, the "Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden".

If you like amusement parks and such then the "Euro-Park Rust" near Rust or "Belantis" near Leipzig, Saxony, might be something for you. Or the "Leipziger Zoo" if you like zoos.

If you prefer coasts or seaport cities then the cities Hamburg, Bremen or Lübeck might be something for you. All three also have pretty "Altstädte" with many historical buildings and places. In Bremen the "Schnoor" ("Schnur" is Thread) or the "Schnoorviertel" ("Viertel" is quarter) is pretty famous. It's a quarter in Bremen with very narrow streets and high buildings, owing to building restrictions and few space. Here's a little more information (in English) about it. Or, if you like museums about the sea the "Ozeaneum" in Stralsund might be something you'll enjoy - and while you're in Stralsund you might like to visit Rügen, the biggest island of Germany, which is very close by. On the other side of Northern Germany you can find the "Wattenmeer" (Wadden Sea), which is famous for its ecosystem, including many birds and seals. Tho some parts are only visitable with guides to save the environment (and the visitors as the sea/tides can be fast and dangerous). Another interesting museum about climate in different parts of the world is the "Klimahaus Bremerhaven" ("Klima" is climate, "Haus" is house). It's an interactive museum where each room simulates a different climate/region.

Here's a link to an article with more recommendations (it's in German but again, I'm sure if you put the link into Google translate it should be find).

Which brings me to the second part of your question. I'm currently learning one completely new language and one I've learned in school in the Duolingo-App, which I like because it's free (or at least there's a free version which, in my opinion, is as good as the pay version). Depending on your starting-language the quality of the course can differ - I found that the English course for French speakers includes more vernacular (?) French than what I learned in the French course for German speakers. There are also some German blogs on here that you might like to follow to practice German (not all their posts are in German, just some). For example @official-german-medienlandschaft @official-kinderkanal @langernameohnebedeutung @useless-germanyfacts @deutsche-bahn @official-german-gaming @official-german-schulsystem @official-nordrheinwestfalen @officialgreifswald.

@salvadorbonaparte also made a wonderful (!) post with language learning resources - it's their pinned post.

Hope this helps - have a nice day :)

If you have more questions feel free to ask 😊

Hi! I'm an Ashkenazi Jew trying to write Mizrahi characters, and I'm trying to avoid perpetuating Ashkenormativity, especially in light of how Jews of Colour are often treated by white Ashkenazim. It's surprisingly difficult to find information on Mizrahi minhag (for example, I couldn't find a definitive answer on whether Mizrahim wear a kittel on Yom Kippur), but I was wondering if there were any major differences to keep note of, save for the obvious language and food stuff?

hi! I am writing something with elements based off of inuit/native canadian culture, and one of my characters is a trans woman. I was wondering how to incorporate her place in society and the way she interacts with her culture/identity( especially things like tattoos, which can have meanings related to gender--ex. signifying menstruation) without being insensitive. I want to explore different aspects and opinions, but I don't want to say something about a culture I'm not a part of. Thanks!

Trans Inuit, Incorporating Culture

Important note: Native Canadian cultures are very broad, and include way, way more peoples than just the Inuit. Canada’s borders are well below the Inuit’s ranges, and calling it “Native Canadian” culture is just as unspecific as “Native American” culture. Remember to pick a nation or WWC will be hard pressed to help you.

Not Inuit, ten buckets of salt for this, Inuit followers feel free to correct me.

My first suggestion is to begin decolonizing your concept of gender and to imagine a society where assigned gender at birth is less of a thing, if it’s a thing at all. Would trans women even exist in this world, or would they have no assigned gender at birth to be “trans” from? Would children be able to self identify in toddlerhood, when most children develop a concept of gender? Would they use the label for other cultures who do have a more binary gender system? How many genders are there? What sort of privileges and rights would they have if colonialism wasn’t forcing a gender binary to exert social control over the people?

Indigenous cultures are a lot less biologically essentialist than colonizers would have you believe. A lot of Indigenous languages don’t have gendered pronouns, and a lot of Indigenous populations have some sort of two-spirit identity (or multiple 2S identities), including Inuit people. Try to find Inuit stories centred around third gender identities and see what happens.

That being said, two spirit trans people exist! It is very much a common thing for Indigenous people to use Western labels for any reason they want (from working in a colonial society to just preferring it), and it could very well be a thing in your culture as well. It’s up to you to decide that, just be mindful that despite a lot of biological and historical revisionism that says the past was binary based on assumed gender at birth, Indigenous peoples very much were not that. We had allowances for the wide variety of who people were.

Opening this to Inuit followers: how would a not-cis (by western standards) person be treated in a society without colonialism? What sort of position would they hold?

Trans South Indian & Filipino, How to represent both cultures and family relationships

I have a trans character who is the daughter of a South Indian and a Filipino immigrant. As a trans person myself, I’m confident in my ability to write the trans part of her storyline, but I want to be sensitive in how I intersect the two sides of her culture and write her relationship with her family. Are there any cultural perceptions about trans people that her family would be working through after she comes out? Would it be insensitive to have them initially unsupportive but come around over time? How do I write the emotions behind that initial rejection, given this character’s cultural background? What should I include, and what should I avoid?

On the South Asian side, we’ve had a variation of this discussion already. Here are some of responses with respect to the Hindu stance on the issue:

It wouldn’t be surprising for family to initially be unsupportive, but that’s not always a given for Hindus and Buddhists. We don’t exactly have any rule that says “Thou shalt present as the gender assigned to you at birth”. Even if we did, Hindus and Buddhists are not known for uniform stances. Cultural and familial expectations for marriage and child-rearing are more likely to be a source of conflict, but frankly, I’m a little tired of stories that emphasize the lack of progressive perspectives on gender in the Global South.

I would very much like to hear from our Muslim S. Asian followers on this topic.

15 and 23 for the snape asks!

Avatar

heyyyy  💖 thanks for the asks   💋 love ya! not me rambling about every snape thought i’ve ever had again 😎

15. If he’d lived, how do you think he would have gone on with his life? I think he’d just,, vanish from Hogwarts and the main wizarding world, no matter any awards he gets or not. You’d find him somewhere near a rocky cliff overlooking a stormy sea. Behind the treeline on the rocks above is his cottage, where strangely colored smoke always plumes out of the stone chimney and the trees whisper such strange things to you. The oddly colored mushrooms and toadstools look identical, but Severus, expert potioneer knows the difference. He spends his time creating and inventing, for no one in particular. Maybe he’ll feel empty, not creating for someone else. After all, he lived almost his entire life in the servitude of other people. Maybe after feeling lonely, he’ll come out with a book later, publishing a revolutionary book in the field that will be well sought after. Maybe he’d finally get the power he’s always wanted, by pursuing his passions. Maybe people would finally come to admire him and appreciate him :)  💖 and this time, he didn’t even have to change a single thing about himself to accomplish that!  💖

23. How is Snape with animals? (if u disregard the,,, j.k. terfling harming animals in the wizarding world and treating it as a common occurrence *cough cough* transfiguration class *cough cough*) then I feel like Severus is great with animals. He is deeply protective of those animals that are considered “creepy” or “ugly” or “weird.” He knows what it feels like to be vilified and labeled so harshly when all you did was simply exist. He thinks rats are cute, sharks are misunderstood, and toads are fun. He would never harm a garden snake and he’s the type of person to put spiders outside instead of killing them. He loves cats and rabbits but would never have them both at the same time. He has conversations with the crows outside as he feeds them breadcrumbs. He’s always wished that someday, someone would show him the love and kindness he’s always shown animals. *bonus* As per my Snape animagus headcanon... I hc his animagus form to be a black netherland dwarf rabbit (I have some snape bunny drawings if you check my archive). Bunnies LOVE him. They instantly know and trust him. He takes in any sick or injured rabbit that can’t get better on its own and he nurses them back to health. Then when he goes to release them after they’re all better, they don’t want to be released. They just hop back into his arms. He’s currently the proud papa of 7 rabbits now, and they all have names and they all love to cuddle him but on their own terms.  💖

Do you guys know of any book where a bi girls dates a guy? The only books i see that have bi representation are books where the bi (f) character ends up with a girl or the bi character is villain for being attracted to men rather than the female main character. I guess i would just like to see representation of myself and relationships

Yeah there definitely seems to be a lack of book with bi characters that end in m/f relationships vs same gender relationships. I find it already hard to find female bi characters in m/f relationships and i have yet to come across 1 book with a bi male character. I have read some of these books though i don't think anyone cares to hear my opinion but here are some recommends:

Lets talk about love from claire kann

Young adult romance novel about a bi ace girl who comes out to her girlfriend about being ace and she dumps her and she is about done with dating after that until she meets a very attractive man at her job.

This is the second book in Alisha Rai's forbidden hearts series an adult book series where a young woman who owns a cafe and after being widow her husband's brother comes to help her run her cafe and old desires and rekindled

Inkmistress is a fantasy young adult novel by a woman who is a demi god that can do blood magic. Her life is turned upside down when the woman she loves life is threatened by bandits and desperate to save her she uses her magic though the spell goes horribly wrong and now she must imbark on a journey to stop the woman she loves from killing the king.

Note worthy a contemporary young adult novel is about girl desperate to be the school musical and when she finally lands a spot her low alto 2 voice threatens it so now she must look for more options and when she finds a spot in an all men's singing group, she puts on her most convincing drag and lands a spot.

Little and lion is another ya novel about a girl returning home from bordering school having to help her brother with his bipolor disorder but things get strange as she gets a crush on the woman her brother has been in love with for years along with an old crush she's had on one of her male friends for years.

I know fileflies fandom is small, but the time has come. It's time to start The Most Important Discussion: who is the little spoon and who is the big one?

Uff, difficult. My first instinct would be that Beelzebub is the big spoon because ze is one of The Lords of Hell and "I have a reputation, Dagon! I can't (!) be the little spoon!!" but secretly ze would adore it (in a demonic way😉) to be the little spoon. And Dagon being the second man demon to zir would probably love detest to protect their Lord of Flies and hold zir in their arms 😄

Anonymous asked:

@spooning anon: that is valid, but consider this: who falls asleep on the other's lap and who falls asleep on the other's shoulder?

Oh, that's easy. Since Dagon has the most beautiful hair💓💓 (who could resist running their fingers through it??Beelzebub? I believe not!) they obviously fall asleep on Beelz's lap, while Beelzebub looks like someone who'd work all "day", forget to rest and therefore fall asleep on Dagon's shoulder (who originally just wanted to look after zir and the paperwork but doesn't complain in the slightest whenever it happens☺️)

@spooning anon: what do you think?

Oh wait! I do have another Arsenic related German question - When he's talking (cutely) about how he's going to do Jonathan's next face, he says something like "and I do a [Schmit?], that's my specialty" -- what is he saying there? Thank you again, this is fun :)

Hello anon👋🏻,

Well according to the script and my own observations he's saying "I'll do a Schmidt" (some German (??) surgeon, I assume, who invented a method of Blepharoplasty (plastic surgery on the eye(lids)) - in the one (1) book on plastic surgery I know/have looked into from Jacques Joseph (published 1987, but the book is older - around late 19th or early 20th century I'd say), I couldn't find any Schmidt-method for the eyes 🤷🏻‍♂️so I have no idea if they just choose some (very common btw) German name (although there're many different spellings of the name) and named/made him the founder of that surgical method...Maybe he's supposed to be a professor of Herman in Heidelberg🤔Afterwards Herman's just describing how that method works and honestly, after the "I take it together like this-", I don't understand what he's saying after that😅 (and btw, why does he want to give Jonathan "nice, little ears"???? That man has a really long face - little ears would look ridiculous........ I know he's not getting the new face (purely) for aesthetic reasons but still...)

Here are the (in that book) described methods for Blepharoplasty:

Isn't plastic surgery amazing????

(The book is really interesting and available in Google books, if you're interested in such themes)

But Herman says the same things about the "Schmidt" in the dubbed versions. It's either "I'm doing something really fabulous on your eyes, a so-called Schmidt, that's my specialty. I take one eye and pull it half a centimeters (0,196 inch) to the right." or "And I'll make your eyes à la Schmidt, that’s my specialty. You see, I'll move the eyelids to here and then these little scars will disappear immediately."

Let's not talk about the other things they made them say in the German (dubbed) versions...... In one Jonathan threatens Herman's life (If you don't work carefully this time, Doctor, I'll kill you.) AND instead of nonetity he says "Ich möchte aussehen wie eine Null" (I want to look like a zero) - nvm that "eine Null" in German is synonymous with "a loser" 😂😭 (I was really close to either punching a walk or crying while listening to the German versions...)

Have a wonderful day and don't watch the 1967th German version of the movie unless you wanna torture yourself!! (the 57s version is okay) 😉💛

I have been looking for a kindly German Peter Lorre fan to answer the eternal question -- What the heck does Dr Einstein say when he falls into the windowseat?

Hello anon👋🏻,

Well...... Besides the "Himmel!" (Heavens!) after the "it's dark in here" during his fall, I..have no idea. I know he says something afterwards, before he lightens the match, something that sounds like "....bless you" or smth (and makes no sense so far to me😭).

Buut, because of your question I watched the 1957 and 1962 German (dubbed) versions and let me say, it might not have cleared things up for me regarding this question other than that in the 57 version he says "Was ist denn das?" (what is that?) before the "where am I, oh, here I am." what doesn't match....at all...the (probably said) "bless you" babble of him.... But on the other hand I could enjoy Jonathan's name being pronounced - with a really thick German accent - "Jonasan" - the highlight of my evening (I cried with laughter).

So thank you, so much, for your ask. I don't know if I could help you, if not, don't be shy to ask again. The other German saying Herman says (my favorite (!!) line in the whole movie btw, because it sounds so adorable and sweet), when trying to get that damn idiot...ahem...Mortimer out of the house is "Oh, du lieber Himmel, was habe ich verbrochen?" (oh, dear Heavens, what have I done (to deserve this)?).

Have a nice evening and thanks again for making me watch this movie for the 50th time❤️. If you have more questions (about wonderful Peter Lorre), please don't feel shy to ask them. I will answer if I can!!!

What's your favorite fast car? I like the 1964 Shelby Mustang 😄

I can't say I have one favorite car because I like cars when they look stylish. I like Dom's car (Dodge Charger R/T 1970) for example. It's black, therefore it looks cool and it's fast😬 and my favorite car isn't (probably) even that fast (except when it's driven by Kuhlhardt🤣). It's a Cadillac Convertible red - because one of my favorite characters drives one (he's some film noir like private detective but the book he's in looks like this

🤣🤣 (other cars I like: Jaguar 1967, because again, a favorite character of mine drives one😁 - DCI Thomas Nightingale from "Rivers of London" 😍)

I looked 'your' car up and omg, that's beautiful 😍😍
