reminder that biden wants to:

  • raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour
  • scrap past marijuana convictions
  • make college free for two years
  • increase the pay for teachers, particularly in underfunded schools
  • significantly increase taxes on the rich (both direct wealth taxes along with additional taxes on major corporations)
  • have universal background checks for firearm purchases
  • get us back into the paris agreement in order to switch to clean energy by 2035 (and his plan has been outlined already and the first few steps have been specified)
  • end the cocaine sentencing disparity (as it is deeply racist)
  • abolish the death penalty
  • support a government mandated 12 weeks of paid family leave for workers
  • eliminate private prisons

this man fully acknowledges the science behind climate change (unlike trump), wants to work to fix certain racist elements in american society (unlike trump), supports the lower and middle classes (unlike trump), is willing to put his money where his mouth is (unlike trump), and isn’t a full on fascist that ignores the global pandemic and takes the side of neo-nazis and white supremacists (unlike trump). biden is miles better than trump. is he the ideal candidate? no, but he is willing to work towards making the USA a more progressive place and that is the first step we need to take. vote blue.

Did y'all even fucking pay attention to all the climate change regulations Obama and Biden implemented? Cutting greenhouse gasses and pollution? The Paris Climate accords? The pandemic response team that they created?

Trump systematically rolled back EVERY major climate regulation Obama and Biden enacted, from increasing fuel standards for cars to limits on methane. He backed out of Paris. He dismantled the pandemic response team.

Republicans don't believe climate change is a thing at all. Biden has a $2 trillion dollars climate plan based on the Green New Deal. Biden has said multiple times that climate change is one of the greatest existential crises the next President must face.

This isn't "vote for Biden because he's not Trump." The parties could not be farther apart. Biden heard y'all in the Primaries and MOVED LEFT.

If y'all think that Biden is just as bad as Trump, or that he doesn't want anything to fundamentally change, you didn't pay attention the entire time under the Obama administration. You aren't paying attention now.

You're a fucking moron who doesn't give one shit about the progressive causes you actually care about. You only care about getting woke points on the internet and being angry. Fuck you.

Wait I decided I'm not done

Trump is a literal fucking fascist. Not to be the Jew that tells you all the signs of Nazi Germany are already fucking here. But they are.

Biden at least fucking believes in Democratic norms and not being a fucking fascist

Even if you think Biden is some kind of boring centrist who doesn't want to change a thing. If you can't tell the fucking difference between that and a fucking fascist. Fuck you.

Also, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 87 and has cancer for the fifth time and Trump just announced that he wants to replace her with Ted Cruz. Things like Roe v Wade, climate regulation, voting rights, and criminal rights are all hanging by a 5-4 thread on the Supreme Court that depends on one of the five Republican Justices having a spasm of conscience. If Ted Cruz replaces RBG and solidifies a 6-3 Republican majority for the next forty years, it won't matter how progressive your President or Congress is because SCOTUS will strike down every fucking law and regulation they pass, in addition to overturning Roe v Wade, marriage equality, and other fundamental rights.

Y'all aren't as progressive as you think you are

Do we need a whole article that can be summed up with: "when public opinion was against gay rights, Joe Biden was against gay rights, when the public flipped, Joe Biden flipped."

It's really that simple.

I love "huh 🤷‍♂️ another water is wet article 🤷‍♂️" posts that don't link the article.

I also love the insinuation that politicians changing??? Their minds???? In response to changes in public opinion (aka the people THEY REPRESENT)??????? Is a bad thing, somehow. I mean, I see that snide little "flipped", OP! I see it! The 2004 GOP called, they're glad folks are still making use of one of their more successful attack strategies.

It's not, like, the work of thousands of activists whose efforts made the FUNDAMENTAL shift in how lgbtq+ people are percieved possible was based on the HOPE that people can change and learn and grow as they exist in a changing world.

Also I love how """"politicians""" and their opinions are seen as entirely separate from "the public" they serve. As if Biden wasn't part of that same public and couldn't have personally had that same shift in opinion over time which is -- AGAIN -- what we hope people do.

I get it: the idea of a PERFECT politician, whose ideas have aligned with your current, best informed, most empathetic self 100% since the dawn of time is very seductive. It means once you get them elected, you can wash your hands, sit back, and let them do whatever they're going to do bc they agree with you & always have & thus you can trust them to do The Right Thing no matter what.

Of course, I can't say *I* would be my own perfect candidate, as MY opinion on fundamental things has dramatically shifted even within the past ten years, much less MY WHOLE LIFE, and I doubt I'm alone on that. But still: surely, somewhere, some perfect candidate exists who knew all the answers and was right All Along & didn't for instance have sketchy ideas about the dreaded "identity politics" or Latin American dictators or the NRA, and doesn't have to apologize for anything, and has never had to grow or change as they learned more about the world bc they were right from the start.

But until we find that candidate, we're stuck with the ones we've got: for president this year, it's two old white men who've lived very public lives for a long time, and whose opinions have thus been thoroughly documented. In terms of harm reduction, which sounds better: the guy who -- when not even in public office -- called for the execution of five black teenagers for a crime they were innocent of and has still, TO THIS DAY, never apologized for it & has in fact double down on the fact that "they must've been doing something " and that he was therefore justified? Who's MADE A POINT of never apologizing or admitting mistakes, presumably because he thinks that shows weakness?

Or, idk, this guy:

This a thousand times. Also remember to vote down ballot. when the GOP flipped over a dozen state legislatures back in 2010 they created Project REDMAP to control redistricting after the Census. They gerrymandered the fuck out of states and they publicly boasted how they were able to gain/maintain lopsided majorities both on the state and House of Representatives level, DESPITE a majority of voters voting against them. 2020 is another census year and the Trump Administration has explicitly argued for changing the Census to overrepresent nonhispanic whites and Republican voters. If they gain/maintain enough state governments to control post-2020 redistricting then we’re fucked. The Senate, WH, and SCOTUS are already an uneven playing field. This could render the House of Representatives defacto out of reach for democrats as well. So please please vote D in every race like the future of our democracy is at stake – because it is.

This is a terrifying state of reality. And this is from someone that used to fancy themselves a moderate 15~ years ago. Do it. Vote blue. Vote blue like lives depend on it, because they do. And I hate settling, I really do, but get your perfect candidates squared away in the primaries as best you can and then regardless of the results, vote blue. Fucking vote blue. Jesus christ please vote blue.

In light of these horrifying new rules I wanna talk about my experience with trans healthcare in an environment where both the law and company policy made my healthcare provider technically not discriminate against me.

I’m gonna talk about medical stuff and genitals and blood here so you’ve been warned.

I tried to figure out how to get hormone therapy from my insurance. I started with my therapist. She didn’t know. I went to my primary physician. He told me to talk to my therapist. I eventually had to tell him three times to talk to his manager who gave him a paper with the number and address for the gender clinic on it.

The gender clinic that my insurance covers is a four hour drive from my house. It is also completely overbooked all the time because it is one of only three gender clinics in the entire state of California and the only one covered by my insurance. That wouldn’t make a huge difference anyways because all three of them are a similar distance from where I live.

So I have to get telemedicine appointments with a gender therapist and an endocrinologist specially trained for dealing with trans patients. My pharmacy doesn’t carry testosterone gel and I have to wait for it to get in. Finally, after this whole process took me almost four months, I got on testosterone. End of story, right? Just do regular blood tests and continue with telemedicine right? Happily ever after? Wrong.

After a while, without my consent, my insurance changed my endocrinologist to a local one and I was forced to have an in-person appointment with her or else they weren’t going to refill my testosterone prescription. So I go to the appointment. I take the blood test (ignoring the nurses that misgender me and pronounce my name wrong) and I am so polite. I just want to go home.

And… the endocrinologist tells me that she won’t refill my prescription unless I get a pap smear. What’s a pap smear you may ask? It’s a test for cervical cancer. A cancer caused by a virus that I’ve been properly vaccinated for on a body part that I plan to get removed eventually. The way it works is that they prop the vagina open and scrape some cells off of the cervix. The body part that prevents things from entering the uterus.

Okay, I think. Fine. Body part that sometimes gives me dysphoria, super invasive procedure, kind of painful, but whatever. Millions of people get this done every year. It’s going to hurt. It’s going to suck. But I’ll get my testosterone prescription and prove to them that I don’t have cancer.

So I request a male gynecologist because in my personal experience male doctors misgender me less often. They give me a female gynecologist anyways. Her and the nurses misgender me through the entire process and use my deadname even when I ask them to stop. They question me several times about my period even after I tell them several times that I don’t have one anymore because I’m on testosterone. The whole process was so upsetting that I refused other optional tests they offered me, even ones I thought I would like to know about, because I just wanted to get out of that place as soon as possible.

I don’t have cervical cancer. Whoop de do. My endocrinologist gives me another nine months of testosterone refills. Hooray.

I still every three to nine months have to email and bother my endocrinologist a lot to get more refills. Sometimes she sets an ultimatum. I’ve gotta get this or that test done, even if I don’t need it. Or I’ve gotta see her in person or give her a detailed report on how I’m doing. And I do it. Because I need testosterone. The idea of being forced off of it scares me more than death. And getting another endocrinologist doesn’t work. Because most of them in my area do very similar things. And I understand blood tests. I get that. But even during checkups that aren’t related to trans healthcare I’m still misgendered and deadnamed even though my new name and gender identity is in the system. Even though they put patents preferred pronouns on their charts. Even when I have visible stubble on my face.

My primary physician is the only person who never does this to me and he’s actually put in the effort to take basic training surrounding trans patients but nobody else that treats me has. And why don’t I file a complaint? Well, who else is going to hold my prescriptions hostage? I have no idea and historically law enforcement of every kind isn’t on trans people’s side. And I’m broke! I need my dad’s insurance to get my T and asthma control inhalers. I’d possibly die without them. I can’t jeopardize any of that. So I have to let them push me around.

This is my experience with a good insurance company in the state of California. A state that has mandated trans healthcare be covered for a while. What is trans healthcare gonna look like after doctors are allowed to legally discriminate against transgender patients when this is what our healthcare looks like under the most ideal of circumstances in this country?

Okay, I’ve read Joe Biden’s plans.

I’ve just sat down and spent several hours actually reading all the damn plans on his website, the whole thing, so you don’t have to. And here’s the conclusion:

They’re pretty good.

Are they absolutely everything we want immediately? Maybe not. Are they a solid Democratic agenda anyway? Yes they are. Are they better than Trump?

Light years!

His Violence Against Women plan is lengthy, detailed, and pays specific attention to violence against Native, lesbian and bisexual, low-income, disabled, rural, transgender (especially trans women of color) immigrant, domestic abuse victims, and other vulnerable women. He calls for replacing and expanding Obama-era policies and funding for campus sexual assault programs that DeVos trashed, and for providing money for culturally specific services that are sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of survivors. He also notes that sexual assault, while it predominantly affects women and girls, needs to be taken seriously and addressed for people of all gender identities.

His gun safety plan is forceful and lays out several steps for banning assault weapons, taking existing weapons from offenders, closing gun purchase background check and other legal loopholes, addressing the intersection between domestic violence and weapons ownership, and reducing or eliminating weapons and ammunition stockpiling.

His plan for tackling climate change and creating green jobs is also lengthy. He makes the connection between economic, environmental, and racial justice. He pledges to immediately rejoin the Paris Agreement and restore American leadership on the issue in pushing for even stronger climate standards, make climate change a central part of our trade, international, and justice goals, demand a worldwide ban on fossil fuel subsidies and tax breaks (!!!) and if the Green New Deal is passed, to sign it, as well as for the U.S. to achieve 100% clean energy and zero percent net emissions by 2050.

His healthcare plan is decent. It offers an immediate public option for all Americans regardless of private, employer, or no coverage, and generous new tax credits to put toward the cost of coverage. It strongly protects abortion rights and federal funding for Planned Parenthood, as well as rescinding the “gag rule” that prevents U.S. federal aid money from being used to provide or even talk about abortions in NGOs abroad. It attacks generic and drug price gouging. It calls for doubling the capital gains tax on the super-wealthy (from 20% to 39.5% paid on capital gains by anyone making over $1 million) to help fund healthcare reform. He also has a separate plan on the opioid crisis in America, and on older Americans and retirement, including the protection and re-funding of Medicare and Social Security.

His immigration plan is lengthy and detailed. He apologizes for and acknowledges the excessive deportation that occured during the Obama-Biden administrations, pledges to do better, and attacks Trump’s current inhumane acitivities on every front. The policy of children in cages, indefinite detention, the metered asylum system, and the Muslim Ban are gone on day one. In this and his LGBTQ plan, he notes the vulnerability of LGBTQ refugees, incuding LGBTQ refugees of color. He proposes streamlining of visa applications and prioritizing the immediate reunification of families. It also specifically states that ICE and CBP agents will be held directly accountable for inhumane treatment.

Speaking of which, his LGBTQ plan is comprehensive. It pays attention to multiple intersectional issues, down to the high rates of incarceration among trans people of color. (He also notes the rates of violence against trans women of color particularly.) He calls for a complete ban on conversion therapy and the discrimination against HIV-status individuals, as well as removing the ban on blood donation from gay and bisexual men. He will remove the transgender military ban immediately. He calls for funding for mental health and suicide prevention among LGBTQ populations.

His plan to empower workers calls for raising the federal minimum wage to $15, as well as indexing this to median hourly wages to ensure that working-class and middle-class wages grow closer to parity, and implementing strong legal protections for unions. He expresses support for striking workers and to empower the National Labor Relations Board in workplace advocacy. Farmworkers, domestic workers, gig economy workers, and other non-traditional labor groups are included in this. He will restore all Obama-Biden policies related to workplace safety and regulation.

His plan to restore American dignity and leadership in the world calls for immediately investing in election security and reform, restoration of the Voting Rights Act, immediately restoring White House press briefings and other Trump refusals of information, tackling criminal justice reform and systematic racial discrimination, calling for campaign finance reform, and basically blowing up all the stupid things the Trump administration does on a daily basis. It also calls for an end to all ongoing wars in the Middle East, restoring the Iran nuclear deal, and new arms control treaties with Russia, among general repairing of international alliances.

His plans for K-12 education and post-high school education call for greatly expanded funding across all levels of 2-year, 4-year, and other educational options. There will be no student loan payments for anyone making under $25,000 a year; everyone else will pay a capped amount and be completely forgiven after a certain period. Public servants qualify for up to $50,000 in loan forgiveness. This is not total loan forgiveness for everyone, which is obviously important for me and many of us, but it’s acceptable to start with. Additionally, his wife is a teacher and has a proven track record of calling for education investment and supporting public school funding.

His plan for housing addresses the needs of formerly incarcerated, LGBTQ, veteran, low-income, sexual assault survivor, black and Hispanic, and other vulnerable populations at risk of losing housing. It calls for a tax on companies and corporations with in excess of $50 billion in assets to fund comprehensive new housing initiatives, including $100 billion in accessible and low-income housing development. It includes extensive investment in public transportation and a high-speed rail system. This ties into his plan to repair infrastructure and invest in new technologies across the country.

His plan for criminal justice reform calls for the end of mass incarceration, the decriminalization of marijuana, the automatic expunging of all cannabis convictions, and an end on jail sentences for drug use. It highlights systematic institutional racism and the impact on black and brown people particularly. It calls for an end on all profiteering and private prisons. It focuses on reintegrating offenders into society and funding the needs of people released from prison. It proposes to “expand and use the power of the U.S. Justice Department to address systemic misconduct in police departments and prosecutors’ offices.” It broadens funding for social services and other programs for people who are otherwise placed into the prison pipeline.

There are more plans, which you can find here. These are the ones I read top to bottom. I am not by any means a Joe Biden fangirl; he was not my first choice, my second choice, or really anywhere on my list. However, having carefully read through his policy documents, I can say that:

  • He has at the least a good team of advisors who are keenly aware of the political climate, and is willing to both restore Obama-era standards and to improve on them where necessary. Obviously, all politicians’ promises are politicians’ promises, but this is a solid Democratic platform with obvious awareness of the progressive wing of the party.
  • If progressive legislation is passed in the House and Senate, he will sign it, including the Green New Deal.
  • He represents a clear and definite improvement over Donald Trump.
  • Is he everything we want? No. Are his policies better than I was expecting? Yes. I advise you to read through them for yourself. It has made me at least feel better about the likelihood of voting for him.
  • I realize it’s an unsexy position, especially on tumblr, to advocate for an old centrist white man. I’m not thrilled about having to do it. However, speaking as someone who was very resistant to Biden and still doesn’t agree with all of his previous legislative track record, that’s my consensus. He is a candidate who broadly aligns with values that I care about. His policies represent a concrete end to the damage of the Trump administration and gets us on the right track again.

Joe Biden, if he is the Democratic nominee, will receive my vote on November 3, 2020. I urge you to consider what I’ve laid out above and join me.

Okay so upon watching Bernie’s statement I want to put a couple facts out there:

  • Bernie states he will no longer be actively campaigning
  • he states he will remain on the ballot and encourages you to continue to vote for him and gather delegates to make our voices and sway known
  • he will not be campaigning on another ballot (independent or Green Party ballot)

The media is continuing is campaign of misinformation to damage Bernies viability. Do not let them fool you. He is not going anywhere. He is merely shifting his focus to continue to help Americans through this pandemic.

Many primaries have been rescheduled or made available via mail/absentee only due to COVID-19

Upcoming Primaries:

APRIL 10: AK

APRIL 17: WY

APRIL 28: OH

MAY 2: KS, GUAM

MAY 12: NE

MAY 19: GA, OR

MAY 22: HI

JUNE 2: CT, DE, DC, IN, MD, MT, NJ, NM, PA, RI, SD

JUNE 6: VIRGIN ISLANDS

JUNE 9: WV

JUNE 20: LA

JUNE 23: KY, NY

If you are not registered to receive an absentee ballot or mailed ballot it’s time to make sure you are. Many states are considering primaries via mail ONLY.

If I may add this:

For everyone considering not voting at all anymore because Sanders is not the nominee:

If Biden’s president with a strong democrat house etc, e.g. Miss Ocasio-Cortez could potentially run for office at the end of his term in 2028. This will NOT be possible if he loses and the house etc go red.

Plan for the future, people.

Listen, I liked Sanders. But the Supreme Court is the only thing I care about right now.

If you vote for anyone that isn't the Democrat nominee, we are looking at a 7-2 right-wing SCOTUS. For how long? 30-40 YEARS.

RBG is 87. Breyer is 81. Chances of them making it to 2024 are not great.

For the record, I think this system is FUCKED and this isn't how SCOTUS composition should be decided, but it is how it is right now.

If you care about the rights of women, of minorities of any kind, you really need to vote for the democrat nominee. No third parties or write ins. No abstaining. And for crying out loud, no assuming that Trump won't win even if you don't vote. VOTE BLUE.

Joe Biden is chemo. Chemo sucks and sorta tries to kill you, but you take it because it kills your cancer faster.

The current state of affairs with regards to how the country’s being run? Cancer.

Bernie Sanders would have been a surgery that cuts the tumor out without long-term damage, but from the looks of it we’re at the point where that’s not a viable option.

Not voting is essential oils: it smells nice and does nothing.

If you aren’t voting for Biden then you’re voting for T.rump. Plain and simple. Spite votes, write-ins, abstaining, it’s all a vote for T.rump. A third-party/write-in candidate Will. Not. Win. It’s taking votes away from the Dem nominee and that means more votes for T.rump. Wake up and smell the oppression.

Vote for Biden. Vote for every Dem candidate in every available office. Otherwise you have no right to complain and probably fewer rights in general by the end of things.

Democrats believe I’m a human being and do actually try to make things better for the vast majority of people. A democrat who’s with me half the time is better than a republican who’s against me 100% of the time. Full stop.

Republicans ignore science, put children in cages, want to see me and mine dead, put children in cages, think guns are more important than people, and put children in cages.

And if people actually looked at Biden’s plans they’d see he’s like, a solid 80 out of 100 on ‘ticks all the boxes on things I support’ while the best republican is a 10. Maybe a 12.

Not voting is a vote for the Putting Children in Cages party.

Also: (said in another post)

If you vote Biden and every democratice candidate available, there is a chance Miss Ocasio-Cortez could run for president at the end of Biden’s term in 2028. She becomes eligible to run for office in 2025 iirc.

So vote Biden and democrats and maybe the next president will be the first woman, and woman of colour at that.

Don’t waste THAT chance.

Sanders just dropped out of the race. I hope you all are ready to vote Biden. Because you do need to vote Biden. You can't abstain. You can't vote third party. That's how we get 4 more years of this. *waves vaguely at the state of things* You have to vote blue no matter who. Don't listen to the propaganda telling you otherwise. Please. If you learn nothing else from me, learn this.

It's Biden or it's more of this.

Anyone telling you that you might as well not vote is trying to oppress your vote.

Let me repeat them.

Anyone who is trying to convince you that they are both bad so you might as well not vote, is trying to suppress your vote.

Avatar

Hey do y'all fucks remember two years ago when just before the election all these “don’t vote both parties are bad” or “vote independent!” Posts were going around and then Trump won and now two weeks before midterms there’s all these “don’t bother voting, revolution is the only way!” And “your vote isn’t gonna matter and is an ineffective way to protest” posts are going around? Yeah knock that shit right the fuck off, don’t fall for it and get your ass to the polls, we are not doing this again.

Being shortsighted isn’t a good look.

1972 - Bernie wrote a letter in support of abolishing all laws dealing with abortion, sexual behavior (adultery, homosexuality, etc.), and drugs

1983 - Sanders signed the first proclamation to create the first Gay & Lesbian Pride Day in Burlington, VT

1985 - Burlington passes proclamation protecting LGBTQ people from housing and employment discrimination

1993 - When Congress members attacked non-discrimination in DC, Sanders voted “no”

1993 - Voted “no” on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

1995 - Sanders rebuked Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham for using the word “homos” when talking about gay people in the military

1996 - Voted against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)

1999 - When Congress tried to keep domestic partners from adopting children in DC, Sanders voted “no”

2001 - When Congress tried to keep domestic partners from receiving health benefits, Sanders challenged it

2004 - Voted against the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage

2007 - Voted to expand and strengthen penalties for violent crimes committed in the basis of sexual orientation

2009 - Voted to expand federal hate crimes to cover offenses motivated by gender identity and sexual orientation

2009 - Supported Vermont’s first-in-the-country law legalizing gay marriage

2010 - Voted to overturn “don’t ask, don’t tell”

2011 - Called on President Obama to support marriage equality

2013 - Co-sponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act

2013 - Co-sponsored the United Families Act to allow LGBTQ Americans to bring their partners to the Us

2014 - Co-sponsored the International Human Rights Defense Act

2015 - Co-sponsored Civil Rights to include sexual orientation and gender identity protected categories

2016 - Co-sponsored Bill to designate June 26, 2016 as LGBTQ Equality Day

2016 - Bernie condemned conversion therapy

2017 - Co-sponsored the Every Child Deserves a Family Act which prohibits foster care entities from receiving federal assistance if they discriminate against prospective LGBTQ parents

2018 - Committed to passing the Equality Act

2019 - Has proposed a comprehensive housing plan that addresses societal homelessness, which disproportionately impacts the LGBTQ community

2019 - Committed to advancing policies that ensure fair treatment for transgender people who are targeted by police unfairly

But yeah, Bernie Sanders “skipping” a forum on LGBTQ rights to host campaign rallies is breaking news

This is the exact same propaganda that got spread to get people to not vote for Hillary. Don’t buy into it and start thinking people like Bernie or Warren are bad choices because they’re still the best options for your votes right now
