[ID: a picture of Miles O'Brien and Julian Bashir from Star Trek: Deep Space 9. The sitting down, leaning their backs against a wall with pained expressions on their faces. Under Julian's face is text, saying: "You know I'll follow Garak to hell and back, but sometimes I wish he'd just stop going." /end ID].

The idea that Garak is a bad tailor really cracks me up

This is actually super funny if you know anything about tailoring, because the thing is, pants come too long, that’s standard. And then you are supposed to go get them hemmed how you like. So if you are in the know, this joke is funny for very different reasons, that have to do with the customer knowing absolutely nothing about how to actually have a tailor. At least, that’s why I cracked up. O’Brien doesn’t seem the type to have the patience to actually go and get things tailored, he would have this complaint if he was used to off-the-rack pants and just picked some up from Garak’s shop and then didn’t bring them to Garak for hemming before taking them home.

Miles: damn Cardassian making pants too long, oooh I’m not returning there >:U

I do think that Miles might have felt personally offended, and honestly, that “Miles goes buy pants from the Cardassian tailor” is an encounter that probably deserves a number of fanfic takes. Meanwhile, if you’ve read A Stitch in Time (and consider it canon), you got to know that Garak was very dedicated to learning how to tailor correctly and found that he even was good at it. I personally think that Garak was vastly misunderstood and that a lot of people badmouthed about him because he’s a Cardassian. In Empok Nor, one of the engineers tells a similar story of disappointment, and I quite imagine that Miles must have made bit of a legend of “Garak is a bad tailor” among his crew mates, and Garak must be very salty about it, even if he tries not to show it. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in retaliation (because Garak is such a child), he regularly badmouthes about how the Station only lives by subpar technological standards because the Chief is such a bad engineer >:v
