not to be german on main but… the first thing roxane does when she sees dustfinger again… after missing him for ten years… is feed him some bread. that’s love. that’s real love.

Yes! If I’m not mistaken, she feeds Farid when he shows up too. I headcanon that she just feeds everyone. She was a strolling player, she knows what it’s like to go hungry, and if you walk into her house and she has enough to give without sacrificing her children’s share, she’s going to make sure that at least for now, you’re fed. Even if it’s just a bit of bread and oil, you are going to have something to eat while you’re there.

~~~Halloween Headcanons~~~
Resa loves halloween and making her own costumes. The Folchart’s have always given out the best candy and have the most decorated house in their neighbourhood. Resa makes hot coco for everyone when they sit around the fire to tell stories. Mo reluctantly dresses up but usually it’s just a pair of ears or a hat. Meggie and Farid tried to put a costume on Gwin once, but quickly learned their lesson.
Dustfinger likes to put on fire shows, he can make all sorts of monsters and figures out of fire to entertain his audience. I like to think there is some similar holiday in the inkworld when the motley folk will put on cool masks and celebrate. He makes Basta’s life a living hell because he tells them there is a witch in the forest who come into the village every halloween to pick a victim.
Farid dresses up as Dustfinger every year and takes trick or treating very seriously. He loves doing pranks and scaring everyone, but when Dustfinger tells ghost stories he has to sleep inside with the lights on afterwards.
Elinor hates halloween. She turns off all the lights and hopes no children come knocking at her door. She does enjoy buying candy for herself and staying up reading classic horror novels though.
Fenoglio always goes out with his grandchildren to get candy. His ghost stories are obviously the best, but the parents complain they are too scary for the kids.
Halloween is a bad time for Basta. He will carve hundreds of jack o’ lanterns to ward off evil spirits. They’re actually pretty good but a huge fire hazard. He also refuses to go out at night lest the witch gets him.
Capricorn puts on a huge party with a bonfire and lots of food. The black jackets will wear horrifying masks and terrorize the locals villages. It’s best not to refuse them what they want when come knocking at your door. They also enjoy smashing and stealing Basta’s pumpkins. At least one of them has gotten a jack o’ lantern stuck on his head. It was probably Flatnose.
farid:
- can’t sit still during stakeouts (can’t deal with boredom)
- never shuts up (need for stimulation)
- always moving (hyperactive)
- doesn’t like complicated plans (difficulty conprehending and carrying out step by step directions)
- HATES shoes and socks (sensory issues)
- rushes to try fireeating and not heeding dustfingers warnings (gets distracted and doesn’t follow proper instructions)
- prioritizes freedom over order and organization (prefers own way of doing things and can’t comfortably adapt to others’ way of living)
in conclusion: farid has adhd
Elinor: Fire-eater, I told you yesterday, no pocket knifes at the breakfast table.
Dustfinger: You said the dinner table.
Elinor: It’s the same table!
And Mo would take Elenor’s side, while Meggie would playfully take Dustfinger’s. And Farid just pulls out a bigger knife, because “Hey, she only said no pocket knives.”
*************************Inkspell/Inkdeath spoilers ahead*************************
So there’s something interesting I noticed while I was re-reading Inkspell. Throughout nearly the whole first two books, ever since Dustfinger finds out that he’s supposed to die in Fenoglio’s version of Inkheart, Gwin is built up to be this harbinger of death because Dustfinger originally died saving him, and in Inkspell, that death is described as “A knife in the back, plunged so deep that it found his heart” which is… Exactly how Farid dies. Dustfinger then decides to give up his own life in exchange for bringing Farid back, and when Basta kills Farid, the scene is described: “Dustfinger saw the knife go into that thin back. He caught the boy before he fell to the ground, but he was already dead. And there stood Basta with his foot on another dead body, smiling. Why not? He had hit his target, and it was the target he had been aiming for all along: Dustfinger’s heart, his stupid heart. It broke in two as he held Farid in his arms, it simply broke in two, although he had taken such good care of it all these years.”
Something else I noticed in the Inkheart/Inkworld series is that if a protagonist says something is going to happen, then it’s almost certainly going to happen, no matter how impossible it sounds. Dustfinger was determined to find a way back to his world, Mo was determined to kill the Adderhead, Farid was determined to bring Dustfinger back, etc. Fenoglio was equally convinced that Dustfinger would die, but although the way he died was technically different than what Fenoglio had imagined, the reason why was still the same: he died to save someone or something he loved. Dustfinger is supposed to come off as an incredibly guarded person, and because of that, people can have a tendency to write him off as being unfeeling and uncaring, but that’s not an accurate description of him. There are so many people who he loves, no matter how he tried to push people away and keep them out of his heart for the ten years he spent wandering the wrong world. He couldn’t keep himself from mentally adopting Farid any more than he could forget Roxane or his daughters or the Black Prince. Neither Gwin nor especially Farid brought him “bad luck”. The way that he died, both in Inkspell and Fenoglio’s version of Inkheart, were almost inevitable when put in the context of his characterization: Dustfinger did everything he could to guard his heart that was destined to lead to his death, and because of who he is, that plan was always going to fail.
