Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) dir. Joel Crawford
I feel like people don't talk enough about how insane the ending of Kung Fu Panda is.
(alternate title:, "One of the many reasons why I LOVE Kung Fu Panda")
There's an almost-universal truism in kids' movies that the hero can't kill anyone. Not even the Big Bad, no matter how warranted it is in the moment or how much the audience wants it. You simply can't do that. Heroes don't kill.
There are exceptions, but this truism is especially universal in the studio that's practically synonymous with kids' films: Disney.
That's why so many Disney villains end up accidentally killing themselves. Usually by falling off of something:
I can only think of four heroes in the entire Disney catalog that deliberately, intentionally choose to kill a sapient, intelligent villain, and all of them were self-defensive and in the heat of the moment, where sparing the villain wasn't an option:
(Note: I have seen most Disney movies, but not all of them)
....and then Dreamworks came along, said "fuck that," and had their goofy, lovable Jack Black character ice a motherfucker just 'cause.
Po has already completely won the fight. The day has been saved. He has Tai Lung at his mercy.
And Po's not even reluctant about it. There's no burden of responsibility. They didn't just have Po kill, they had him enjoy it because his method of murder is so wicked cool.
Po is a hero in a kids' movie who not only kills his villain, but fucking executes him. All with that signature Dreamworks smile on his face:
I have gazed into the abyss, and the abyss said "skadoosh."
[ID 1: four screenshots from Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Beauty and the Beast", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Tarzan". The first screenshot shows the Evil Queen of "Snow White", looking very old who's seen slipping on a puddle and falling off a cliff. The second screenshot shows Gaston of "Beauty and the Beast" falls down a building while it's raining heavily, flailing his arms around, trying to hold on to something. The third screenshot shows Claude Frollo of "Notre Dame" falls down a burning building, holding onto a gargoyle which has burning eyes, seemingly pulling him down. The last screenshot shows Clayton falling down in a forest of vines, one of them wrapped around his wrists and neck. /end ID].
[ID 2: four screenshots from Disney's "The Little Mermaid", "Treasure Planet", "Mulan" and "Sleeping Beauty". The first screenshot shows Ursula from "The Little Mermaid", splitting a ship in two, a giant, glowing trident in her hands. The second screenshot shows Scroop, floating away into the empty space, half wrapped into a blue pirate flag. The third screenshot shows Shan Yu, his own coat pinned to a roof with his own sword. The last screenshot shows Prince Philipp at the end of a cliff surrounded by flames. He's holding a sword, firing a beam of fire towards Maleficent who has transformed herself into a giant purple dragon. /end ID].
[ID 3: a screenshot from the DreamWorks Animation movie "Kung Fu Panda", showing Tai Lung, a snow leopard, looking fearful at someone outside of the camera range who's holding on to his paw, their pinky finger sticking up. /end ID].
[ID 4: a screenshot from the DreamWorks Animation movie "Kung Fu Panda", showing Po, a giant panda, holding Tai Lung's paw, his pinky finger sticking up. He's smirking triumphantly. /end ID].
DISNEY VS DREAMWORKS
Okay,so let’s talk about something. I know in the last years Disney have been creating a lot of strong female characters as Merida,Moana or Elsa. And others most olds like Nani from Lilo&Sticht or less populars as Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet or Kida from Atlantis. Especial mention to Esmeralda because she is one of my favourites. Even if she choosed the handsome guy instead of Quasimodo. But,can we talk about Dreamworks? They have created a lot of female characters that are just incredibles. Let’s start talking about Marina from Simbad.
She went on a travel with pirates to make sure Simbad go back and save her fiancé Protheus. Rain from Spirit
This mare get shoot only to save his horse rider,a native American. Tzipporah from The Prince of Egypt.
She was sold as slave and fight to scape from Egypt. She punched the Messiah in the face so…Also she reminds me of Esmeralda. Astrid form How to Train your Dragon.
This teenager became a dragon rider and a strong viking. I want to mention Ruffnut too.
I mean this girl is not the pretty-femenine type, right?
Tigress from Kung Fu Panda.
Have you sing this design? She is not feminized like other characters with boobs and more softs. No. She is a Tiger. A strong Tigress. That’s all. Chel from Road to El Dorado.
This native helped two spanish strangers to impersonate two gods. And she did what she did just because she wanted to get out of her city and see the world. Also,if you have seen El Dorado you will remember that scene of her and Tulio making out. And the last…Fiona from Sherk.
This girl abandoned her life like a princess in a castle for her love of her life, who ended up being an ogre. She can fight, sing and be a good mother of triplets.
Especial mention to all the female characters of Shrek like The she-Dragon.
And the other princesses who can also fight.
I just prefer the female characters from Dreamworks.
Not to mention that Dreamworks posted this a few days ago:
Look at this.
All of these girls shockingly don’t have the same face or body type.
Disney needs to step the fuck up.
Tho Disney princesses had different faces until...the animated princesses came. Before that Disney princesses did look different.
@doodlebat told me not to draw this cause it’s sad. So I did.
Flynn Rider was adopted by Miguel and Tulio, and no one can convince me otherwise. They have no idea that he married a princess.
The other day my mom said something that i found really insulting to the 2d animation movies, she said that they stopped doing those because they were no longer appealing to the audience and that they were supposed to be discontinued, and i just thought how bullshit of an argument that is.
Comparing 2d animation with 3d and saying one is superior is like saying that digital art is better than traditional art, better than the fucking Mona Lisa, The creation of Adam, in fact, is a pretty ignorant comparation to do because one does not suprass the other, but new techniques are getting invented and we invest in those more.
Is just another way of animation, in fact, the shitty move all those studios did by closing their 2d animation studios eas pointless and it´s gonna cost them greatly, because someday people are gonna want to go back to the 2d animation and studios like Disney or Dreamworks will be too scared to do that, that will be the day that other studios will take upon them and give us what we want.
2D animation has the most beautiful animation i´ve ever seen, there´s something in it that i can´t explain that makes a big difference from watching cgi, and what i think would make a great combination is the great amount of details that you see in CGI and 3D movies into 2D techniques so you could expect to see shit like this
Atlantis (2001)
Treasure Planet (2002)
Sinbad (2003)
5 centimeters per second (2007)
The princess and the frog (2009)
Children who lost their Voices (2011)
Beyond the boundary (2015)
Your name (2016)
So whoever dares to say 2d animation is dead is wrong and also a bitch
