Just once, I want the hero to go “your wife/sister/mother/whatever would not have wanted this!”, and the villain to go, “actually, we talked about this a lot. She was really into vigilante justice and eye for an eye stuff. She always said, if something like this happens, avenge me.”

“Your mother never would have wanted this!”

“Wow you clearly never met my mother.”

“Your wife wouldn’t have wanted this!”

“To be honest, I’m following her list of instructions. Do you think I came up with this plan by myself?”

“I wanted to go to art school, but no! You had to kill my sister and make me enact her 37 step plan on what to do in case she was murdered!”

“Look, if it was up to me I would be sitting at home watching movies, eating fast food without a care in the world but my mom was very specific in her will and if I want my inheritance, I need to follow this plan to the letter. I don’t know what this guy did to her but man did she hold a grudge.”

“I knew your husband, he was a good hero. He would have wanted you to keep doing good deeds in his stead—“

“Actually, he wanted me to finish his bucket list for him and robbing a bank is on there, like, fifty times.”

please stop reblogging sylvia plath poetry

For ppl asking why she’s an anti black, anti Semite. She has used the n word and compared her depression to the holocaust

Even not counting her poetry her private journals are full of disgusting, overblown antisemitism. She didn’t just use Jewish people for her metaphors, she outright hated them irl and yet decided to use their suffering for her own gain

okay, I’m Jewish and I appreciate this sentiment. and if someone wants to cut out Sylvia Plath, go for it, I get it.

But. by this logic we’d also need to stop reblogging TS Eliot, Oscar Wilde, and Shakespeare quotes. Virginia Woolf wrote anti-semetic things in her private journals, too. If you only want to read classic poets who liked Jews and black people, that’s fine, but like. good luck? Sylvia Plath isn’t an exception.

idk. Tumblr’s attitude of “consume nothing problematic” just doesn’t work if you’re part of a group that most culture-creators over the last few centuries have hated by default. For people actually in those groups, it’s not like the only two choices are 1) worship authors who hate you or 2) completely cut the majority of literature out of your life. You learn to read critically and acknowledge flaws where you find them.

anyway, as a Jewish woman, I would much rather see a version of this post that said “please read Sylvia Plath poetry critically because she’s anti black and antisemetic” than just “stop reblogging Sylvia Plath poetry.”

IMO, reblog Sylvia Plath all you want, just not unthinkingly.

Sometimes I fell like tumblr has put itself on the the extreme opposite of “consume stuff incritically”

“Don’t consume stuff instead of dealing with it.”

If I ignore its existence then I won’t have to take a layered view on it.

But guys… anti-semitism is a thing and it’s been a rampant thing for centuries. You can’t ignore that the middle ages or the early 20th century existed. Or heck, the middle of the 20th century in the US.

People always are a product of their times. And some times where just racist as fuck! That was normal! And that is something you have to look at and look at critically because these times will return. And very normal people who are talented and nice will have very horrible, unthinking opinions.

That includes you, btw.

So think instead of ignore.

My history professors were always trying to tell us that you CAN NOT view the past through a contemporary lens if you expect to have any kind of understanding of the past. And “understanding” does not mean acceptance, so let’s get that out of the way right now.   We have the privilege–yes, PRIVILEGE–of living in a time that is the product of other people’s grueling hard work, of centuries of people before us being arrested, beaten up, impoverished, KILLED so that we could stand on our high horses and be proud of growing up in the enlightenment they made for us. Any one of us unlucky enough to have been born 100, 200 year ago would like 99% be racists, anti Semites, and probably misogynists (yes, even minority groups, because anti Semitism and misogyny have long histories in black culture too) because the only way to not be all that in a world where it was so normal it was like believing in gravity was to be exceptional. I mean, beyond your time philosophical genius kind of  exceptional. For any of us to believe that we would just magically be all enlightened and woke if we hadn’t had the benefit of a world around us teaching us not to be is an insane level of arrogance. It would be like trust-fund Brad insisting he would still be a success even if he hadn’t inherited 80% of a company to start. No, Brad, someone did all that work before you were born buddy.  Even the amazing people who were taking leaps to end various discriminations a century ago are still problematic. The white abolitionists were definitely racist by our standards, just not racist enough to want slavery (and most of them were insane Christian fundamentalists who had no tolerance for any other creed). But it would be insane and a gross dereliction of historical duty to just ignore these people and pretend they didn’t exist because they couldn’t magically meet all our privileged standards 170 years ago.

Nothing is inevitable here. I am showing you a way in which we can survive this.
I understand it. I understand the allure of ensuring that no one will ever think you the villain you fear you are. What a waste it seems to me, knowing it doesn’t have to be this way. Knowing the man who talked me into giving a shit about this crew… why, he could talk those people out there into anything. If he wanted to.

Look at me. Look me in the eye. On November the 8th, 2016, one of two things will happen: Hillary Clinton will become president, or Donald Trump will become president. These are the only two possibilities. The superdelegates aren’t going to switch. An indictment isn’t coming. There is no third possibility. There is no space between the spaces where you can hide. Every vote for Donald Trump requires two Hilary Clinton votes to overcome. A Hillary Clinton vote can only be overcome by two Donald Trump votes. If you stay home, a Donald Trump vote doubles its power. This is the real, actual reality of the situation. There is not one other option.

And there’s no ctrl-alt-del for the election. Read up on 2000 if you doubt this.

And to those of us who supported Bernie, he WANTS you to vote for Hillary. If you believe in him and his mission you will follow his advice. He knows that writing his name in, or voting for anyone else besides Clinton, is effectively voting for Trump.

Refusing to vote for Hillary is a vote for Trump, no matter how much you scream and say how it’s not. And if you’re standing by to do nothing in regards to taking down Trump, then you ARE grouped along with the rest of the people in this country that ruin things for everybody else.

No, seriously, go read about the presidential election in 2000.

If you weren’t old enough to remember and/or understand the ramifications of the 2000 election, I WILL TELL YOU.

Do not let Trump win. Please. I beg you. I went to grad school with people who voted for Nader in 2000 and my FB feed is full of them begging others not to make the same mistake they did. Bernie has his priorities straight, and the priority is stopping Trump.

And if that doesn’t do it for you, this is the Republican platform 2016. It calls for:

If you vote for Trump, these are some of the planks of  the platform you’re voting for.

There’s a thick line between a headcanon and believing something is canon.

You are allowed to enjoy your headcanons. That’s what your fandom is made for. You have fun with headcanons. You embrace them. You make fanarts and fanfics of them. Headcanons are the best.

However, you don’t claim a headcanon to be canon and you don’t attack others for having them. Honestly, one would expect people to understand the difference.

you didnt miss much

i revolt secretly every time i see an article or post about how we’re all addicted to our screens and never go outside and have no human contact etc etc.

listen, this is what i wanted.

i saw star trek, and i wanted to walk around with small flat tech that tells me everything i want to know. i never wanted to talk on a phone, even when there wasn’t an alternative. i didnt want to memorize phone numbers for each of my friends; i was terrible at it anyway. how many fucking times did i go to a public library when i was 10, and the book i needed to answer the question i’d been asking for a week was checked out, or lost, or damaged, or getting rejacketed or, and this was the worst, the library had never heard of it and never owned a copy.

do you have any idea how many of those unanswered questions went into cold storage in my jumbled memory until the internet finally answered them or let me order that book or showed me a dozen other paths in the woods to follow and get even better answers?

i’m old enough to remember what it was like before we had this, and it was steaming garbage. it was impossible to put a photo of yourself on the internet without a consumer grade camera, film of the right type, access to a photo lab, and $10 to get the roll developed, most of which would be unusable or blinking or sneezing or ugly or blurry, and then the final insult, you had to scan the dirty, smudgy, badly exposed thing into a computer and then, jesus christ, where would you even host it? do you remember how expensive it was just to get some storage space that would display pictures to other people? i do.

this isnt a “kids these days” post, either. its a post for every newspaper cartoonist who’s made fun of a twenty year old for taking a selfie. that middle aged cartoonist spent the 90s doing exactly what we all did in the 90s: worked our asses off trying to make up for the lack of simple contact books, free cameras, free hosting, accessible image editing, inexpensive and tailored music, and internet access that didnt charge by the minute.

it’s not anythig like a utopia but sometimes its such a god damn relief
