After a couple seconds of silence, she heard footsteps and indistinct mumbling approaching the door, then stepped back as she heard the soft metal-on-metal sound of a chain lock being undone. Huh. She’d told him he should get one after conceding that he probably didn’t have many more secure housing options within his budget, but he’d been hesitant on that, too. Probably just didn’t want to face the inevitable argument with his landlord. What had changed to— The door opened with a hard jerk, and Elle felt her stomach drop out as Spencer appeared in the entryway. The answer to her question was everything, apparently.
