i'm actually not done with fixating on this, bear with me.

this is a man who, not long after you first meet him, admits that the entirety of his life was not is own: he was shaped by the crows and his time was theirs from birth. he later tells you, almost casually, that he and his cousin were always going to end up under his grandmother's care for training, being sharpened to a killing point.

this is a man who lost a year of his life to the ossuary, and admittedly only maintained his sense of self by thinking about revenge (and cooking), even after a literal demon was forced into him.

this is a man who was, up until very recently, still losing time to said demon, who would take him over when he was at his most vulnerable because he wasn't able to let himself leave the mental prison he'd intentionally locked a part of himself away in. he couldn't escape it, even with the door left open.

but with rook, he feels like he's finding time, and if an hour has passed in their company, it only means that it was an hour that's entirely his. the time he spends with them is a reclamation of his life in a lot of ways, and i'm probably never going to stop being emotional about that.

I love how the game tries to convince you that the First Warden is so unreasonable and annoying and a pisser when Rook talks to everyone like a flat earther. Like going up to your county sheriff and saying "hold all your calls. We need to focus on the real problem: Zeus and Aphrodite from Greek Mythology are in the White House and they have the nuclear missile codes" it's a wonder he didn't just kill them on the spot
