The prototype to Gwen’s perfected one that is…you’ve hit it exactly on the head, my god
it's wretched, isn't it? but it's really the only way that i've been able to look at their probable dynamic since he's started talking about the kids/what kind of father percy is, because there's just this notable gap in discussion where vesper is concerned that's really, uncomfortably telling.
even right down to how she was named, vesper had to be this memorial to people she'll never know, while her younger siblings get to be i) a pair of twins; a language that her mother knows fluently and can raise with familiarity, ii) another brother who was also blessed/cursed with a name that's a reminder of family that's gone, but presumably with enough time having passed that it feels more like a tribute than a promise, and iii) the undeniable favourite, which isn't her fault and when you're a grown adult you really don't need to be upset about it because by then there's no fixing what was imperfect in your own upbringing (so all you can do is be happy that at least one of you gets that with your father.)
like, obviously vex and percy were way out of their depth when vesper was first born! it hadn't been that much time since the fall of vecna, and they'd been trying to find their footing (between rounds of chaos that the one-shots provided VM) as post-campaign individuals and as a couple and newly minted leaders, all while raising a baby for the first time. so i'll grant them that: they did the best they could, and idk how much better anyone else would've done in their situation. but now, decades later, it's kind of a harsher picture they've painted because you can see where the warmth has been given and to which kids, and which one just gets to be trusted to run things while percy is away because she's been built to do that.
(but does she even have any friends or loved ones outside of her family? after all these decades, does she get to have a life of her own, like how the twins get to go hunting with vex, or how vax ii was going out to hang out with friends for a bit?)
i don't doubt that percy loves her, but, given how he does/doesn't talk about vesper, does he like her?

like god. imagine you spend your whole life with the promise and hope for the future on your shoulders and you learn how to lead and take care of whitestone and u get to be like twenty years old before your youngest sister is born and then she becomes your father’s favorite and in taliesin’s own words sometimes your father will undermine you for your youngest sister
and you are supposed to be the adult so you can’t be upset about it
