I don’t think the verses of How Did It End are telling us how it ended, because the main bone of contention that we see over and over throughout the rest of the album—marriage—is nowhere to be seen. I think the verses are doing the same thing the chorus is doing, echoing the public’s own theories back at us: she wanted to be more open to the world and he wanted to lock her away! he was a hothouse flower to my outdoorsman. things just don’t work out sometimes, nobody did anything wrong! we learned the right steps to different dances. he probably cheated! and fell victim to interlopers’ glances.

the fact that all pop songs are about on-again off-again love triangles is endlessly disturbingly fascinating to me. why is your love interest's ex always a character in the song. why are you always trying to get back together with your ex or watching your ex get back together with their ex. I am begging our songwriters to break up for good, expand their social circles, and date someone new
