This a a reminder to not fall victim to the sunk-cost fallacy. Just because you invested time and energy into something, does not mean you should indefinitely waste more time and energy on it, if you decide it’s not what you want anymore. This goes for anything, from books, to relationships, to jobs, to hobbies, etc.

If it’s not serving you anymore, move on.

This is honestly one of the places I find Marie Kondo's advice most helpful. I stop, look at the thing I've spent time and money on only to realize I dislike, and I say, "Thank you for teaching me something about myself and my preferences. I think I've learned this particular lesson and we can part ways now."

And then I don't feel like I "wasted" things or made a mistake. I just tried one path of learning about myself, learned something, and now it's time for a different path. Works a lot better for my brain.

The time Marie Kondo said "you can thank a a shirt you've never worn for teaching you about your taste", thereby making it NOT A WASTE literally rewired my whole brain. Acknowledge the thing and move forward, even if that means leaving the thing behind.

when you get rid of CDs you’re also loosing the entire art of album design and CD packaging as well as lyric booklets and the design of the CD itself. and all of those things factor into how you experience the album. looking up lyrics on genius is nowhere near as impactful as looking at the loving design that goes into lyric booklets, the images chosen to accompany certain songs, the typography and text design, even sometimes the artists comments in there as well. while playing individual songs and making playlists or shuffle playing an artists discography is fine it seems like a lot of people have forgotten what its like to listen and appreciate an album. and when “listening to an album” means clicking play on a list of songs with a tiny little album cover on spotify of course its going to be a different experience than getting the actual CD or vinyl or casette and seeing all the love and care that goes into that physical media. ok?

Actually this is a big point for the economics of being a millennial or zoomer. There are observations that because financial goals little homeownership or retirement are so out of reach, our generations spend more on instant gratification or experiences, like going out with friends or going on trips. If you're never gonna afford something why save up for it? Why not enjoy the moment?

The more I think about it, the more I realize that the MCU is probably not going to be kind to the X-Men. Their stories are rarely about big, singular enemies and are more often about interpersonal relationships and bigotry. They'd best be served with TV series' rather than blockbuster movies. I just don't see the MCU being able to handle it well.

I've had enough of society being catered to morning people.. it's time for everything to be pushed back like two hours

Or you could get off your ass and rise with the sun. You'll feel better if you fix your circadian rhythm and eat food that's actually good for you

Anyway, you fucking weirdo, they did studies that concluded that the most efficient work day is 10am to 4pm, no longer than 6 hours, and people will be most productive if a work week is between 26 and 32 hours.

But you do you, ig.

and for ADHD folks (and astronomers, and other people whose rhythm isn't driven by the sun), sometimes the best working hours don't start until after noon

im gonna be honest, i love the new tumblr icon. it feels very in line with what tumblr has been doing recently (completely ignoring what every other social media platform is doing and taking a hard left into “what the fuck is that” territory).

it has absolutely nothing to do with any of tumblr’s other branding or any current design trends (that i’ve seen) and that’s honestly perfect.

i feel like this guy is the spiritual successor to clippy and i love that and i think he needs a name.

(i also feel like this is the face everyone makes when they use the blaze feature to force their shitposts onto the feeds of 500 random, unsuspecting victims.)

actually i lied he’s not perfect. there’s one change i would make.

Marvel movies aren’t even superhero movies anymore. Some of them have like a hero’s journey but they don’t have that vibe of like the early Spider-Man movies or x men or the dark knight or whatever. They all rely on this background knowledge and fanfare of the characters and it’s all about who and what they can fit into one movie. The music industry has behaved in a similar way the past few years too. It’s really cheap idek how to describe it other than like algorithmic pastiche of nostalgia and marketing. Even a24 sells merch. Do people just not like stories anymore and do people just find information itself entertaining. Like it’s about the thought of all 3 spider men in a movie together that sells a movie and makes it a live of the year. Just a gimmick that’s accomplished by playing talent to appear in something.

They stopped being superhero movies right around the end of Phase 1. From that point forward, they've been Blockbusters. While the term has long been used to describe any film that is exceptionally popular and makes a lot of money, I think there's a strong argument to be made that it is a genre of its own now. Especially with the rise of formulaic films created by the major studios that wear the veneer of various genres but are ultimately meticulously designed to have broad appeal in an effort to make as much money as possible.

I love stories of pagan converts to Christianity during the Dark Ages because most often these warrior kings and chieftains would listen to the story of Christ's crucifixion and without missing a beat they'd be like "If I was there with my boys we would've saved him."

Hes a little confused but hes got the spirit

If you want to know just how crazy fucked up Evangelical/Fundamentalist Christian views of the apocalypse are, and how that affects US politics, I recommend The Rapture Exposed by Barbara Rossing. She’s a (mainline) Christian theologian, so a lot of the book is about the theological and Biblical reasons why the Rapture is a horrible twisting of Christian beliefs. But she also spends a lot of time talking about just how fucked up the belief in the Rapture is, and the terrifying political and social consequences that set of beliefs has had for America.

Just had the best surprise a stoner can have. I went out to refill my glass of water, but was kinda bummed because I didn't have anything sweet to eat. Before heading back, I decided to open the fridge and take a look. I knew there wasn't anything in there, but you still gotta check, y'know? Except this time, I was wrong. There was chocolate chip cookie from Papa John's.

I had completely forgotten I ordered it and was so surprised when I opened the fridge and saw it in there. I literally exclaimed, out loud, "OH. MY. GOD!" and chuckled. There was nobody around to hear, but it happened before I realized what I was doing. Plus, it felt right.

don't like the way the AI cult appears to be smoothly progressing to the group suicide phase of the movement

I am literally begging people to show me some counterarguments here. I will take anything

imagine someone had already created eight billion (!) human-level intelligences (!!) armed with nuclear weapons (!!!)

Okay let me rephrase: I would like to reduce (i.e. be convinced to reduce) the number of world-ending threats I’m developing an anxiety disorder concerned about, starting with AI since it’s overly salient and predictions seem more apocalyptic than the rest

Serious questions:

  • When was the first time you heard about AI risk?
  • Who did you hear it from?
  • Who did they hear it from?
  • How long ago was that?
  • How much has AI realistically moved toward those apocalyptic predictions since that time?

The thing is, people have been alarmist about AI for a few decades now and we haven't really seen any negative consequences of AI that were not entirely the result of human action and that could have been stopped by human intervention at any step in the process. Malicious use of AI seems like a much bigger threat at the moment than anything else in the space.

But also remember: the fact that a group of people are more scared of one thing than another doesn't mean that the outcome they fear is more likely than other outcomes. The fact that people who discuss AI risk are so apocalyptic about it should be a cause for skepticism, not credulity. If they're that scared are they really thinking rationally? Do they have any measurable proof that the things they fear are possible with current technology or with currently predicted technologies? What (real world!) steps are they taking to mitigate these things?

I think the comparison to climate change is apt because you can see the way that messaging around the climate has changed in the last 30 years (which is about how long the AI-as-existential-risk movement has been around) but the climate change group is able to show clear and replicable data about extreme weather and droughts and polar ice. Additionally, when they talk about how to mitigate risk they have clear proposals with models of how each proposal might change the possible impacts of climate change, and you can see that their messaging strategy has changed and that they have a sense of urgency that is paired to real-world findings.

"I'm so much more worried about something that might happen instead of something that's already taking place that I've stopped caring about the one that's already present" seems like such a strange stance to take, vis a vis AI and climate change, and yet.

So true. You are not a bad DM (or player) if you don't put professional levels of polish and effort into your worldbuilding/NPCs/character backstory/plot construction. Tabletop that is played with the intent of having fun with your friends is always going to be intrinsically different to tabletop played with the intent of being performed for an audience, and that doesn't make it lesser in any way! As long as everyone's having fun, you're doing it right
