It's December 1st, which is the birthday I gave to my character, Rowan! I've drawn a lot of her this past year or so, here's a few of the pieces.
I have drawn Sandy before, but this is my first finished portrait of him. I had to do some studies first because I had no idea how to really approach this, as he's such an interesting combination of human and otherworldly.
I leaned into his hair being a bit more like it is in the books. I ran into a similar problem with his hair as I did with Tooth's feathers in that it's really symmetrical in the film and if you're going for symmetry in art, it looks really bad if you're even a little off. So, like with Tooth's feathers, I wanted to put a bit of movement and asymmetry into Sandy's hair.
Something I love about doing fan art is that I end up noticing things about the character designs and costumes that I might not have noticed before. I knew Sandy had sand clothes but it turns out there's also some sparkly dream sand in his hair at any given time.
... and now this just leaves Bunny. He will be an adventure for sure.
I finished North! I feel pretty good about how he came out, I'm glad that he did look better once I really got into working on his beard.
I've sketched North before, this is the first time I've actually finished a fully colored painting of him. At some point I would love to do younger North from the books.
This leaves me with Sandy and Bunny left to get a portrait. I feel like Sandy will be weird to work on but still human enough that I can figure it out. I am very nervous about Bunny, I am gonna have to do hella studies beforehand.
She's done!!
I wanted her to go with my portrait of Jack in front of the moon. Ideally I'd do one of these for all of the Guardians but oh boy does that sound like a lot of work after spending all of yesterday drawing feathers.
Trying to adapt her to my style was interesting. I tried to add more movement to the feathers on her head, gave her some subtle eyebrows, and tried to make the feathers on the sides of her head mimic ears a little.
I'm realizing that the reason I draw Jack so much is because he just kinda falls in real easily with my brand of "things I usually draw" and the others very much do not. I am glad I finally gave Tooth a proper portrait, though.
