AU where AtLA ended on a shot that captured the themes of friendship, found family, and the 4 nations coming together in peace… instead of a shoehorned kiss (and everyone wearing Earth Kingdom outfits..?).

I’ve been a diehard Zutara shipper since forever, but I maintain that the show should have ended without any canon ships except Sokka/ Suki. This “alternate ending” shot is one I’ve wanted to do basically since the finale first premiered, so I’m pleased to have finally drawn it (only 13 years late…).

♥ Please do not repost. If you like it and want to show people, share a link to this page instead. Thank you!

Zutara/Taang double date at the Jasmine Dragon

Zuko: Aren’t you supposed to be taking our order?

Toph: Oh calm down it’s not like you don’t take ‘breaks’ whenever Sweetness comes around. It’s not a crime to want to talk to my friends.

Zuko: I just think it’s kind of funny you only to come talk to us when Aang’s here.

Toph: How about you shut the fuck up ❤️

Zutara and Taang becoming canon seemed like it would be so obvious. They all balanced each other out as fire and water, earth and air, fan and sword. Instead it all came crumbling down and fire is alone, water and air became an unhealthy relationship, earth is chill but she’s alone and deserves better, who tf knows where fan is or if the romantic sword ever found a true love, if not fan. It’s just. Frustrating.

Do you think Aang and Toph could've been given a believable love story if there was a Book 4?

what do you think of toph/aang?
I know you’re a Zutara shipper, but do you think the Taang ship could have reasonably worked?

Ok, so I am getting a lot of questions about Taang. And the short answer for whether I think it could have worked is: Yes. If the writers had chosen to go in that direction, I definitely think that Taang could have been a cute pairing. Both Aang and Toph only show attraction to Katara and Sokka, but that is actually something that might have been a point of common ground for them in the future. Both had preteen crushes on their older teammates and can relate.

I definitely think it is in the realm of possibility for Aang and Toph to have some chemistry down the line, as they got older. They are both at the same point in development since they are the same age, so that is definitely an improvement over Kataang. There is no awkward difference in puberty between them. Aang’s feelings for Katara were an immature infatuation and I think he would have outgrown his idealized view of romance as he entered puberty.

After that, it is believable that he may have developed an attraction to Toph. Toph is a bit rough, but she doesn’t coddle Aang, and I definitely think that he needs someone who can be blunt with him when he needs it. He also needs someone who he can see as an equal, and not as a prize. As he got older, he might appreciate Toph’s unique personality more. And Toph needs someone who she can let her guard down around and be affectionate with. She definitely has a warm friendship with Aang that is a good starting point.

Whereas Katara acts like Aang’s mother, Toph is more of a peer. Aang acts like himself around Toph. She also shows playful teasing and affection to Aang at times, like her with nickname of Twinkletoes, for instance. It would not surprise me if Toph eventually developed a crush on Aang. Unfortunately, in canon, even Aang and Toph’s friendship was underdeveloped and it never got the attention it deserved.

Aang’s more “feminine” personality may complement Toph’s more “masculine” personality well. In any case, I definitely think Taang is a vast improvement over Kataang. There wouldn’t be any of the “sweetie” stuff for starters. And since they are both so young, any romance would be very subtle. No forced make-out session, like with Kataang. It could have been cute.

Reblog this with your favorite rarepair

I’m looking for inspiration for Valentine’s Day.

Bucky/Jane!

Does Loki/Jane count? Or is it a dingy rather than a kayak?

I also ship (non-OUAT/Disney) Hook/Grown!Up!Wendy. (I’m pretty sure I’m treading water all on my own with that one. Saw a fan art on Deviantart once, and it did things to me that I was not ready for.)

While I will go down with Thor/Jane, have you ever considered…Steve/Jane? And left over from my hardcore HP days: Luna/Cedric

Makaveli and Araeph discuss Taang.

makaveli-the-avatar
Hey, I wanted to exchange perspective with you on Taang.
araeph
Sure!
makaveli-the-avatar
So, you feel that they would make a good pairing, based on their dynamics within the show?
araeph
I think the answer to that is "maybe."
I think Taang would be fine, but not right away--both Aang and Toph have to develop a little more.
Their personalities certainly balance each other out, but they both need to receive a lot of affection, and I think that would initially be a problem in both directions.
Toph because she's very stubborn and has something to prove... Aang because he's not used to check up on other people as much as other people check on him.
araeph
But I do think they could both benefit from a possible relationship. Toph learning to be more spiritual, and Aang not being as afraid of confrontation. (In fact, I'd say the development of the Taang relationship is the one thing the comics did right in The Rift.)
makaveli-the-avatar
That's my overall opinion as well.
makaveli-the-avatar
I feel Taang would certainly be an interesting relationship when the two get older, but to be honest, I don't think it could last.
makaveli-the-avatar
The two do have contrasting personalities that could potentially balance each other, but the problem, I feel, is that balance would be largely negative and dysfunctional, to a degree.
makaveli-the-avatar
Unlike their relations with others in the Gaang, where each person shares some similar views and thinking, Aang and Toph are vastly different people at their cores.
araeph
They are. And I don't think Toph wants to be responsible for repopulating the Air Nomads. :/
makaveli-the-avatar
They have entirely different values, philosophies, approach to dilemmas, and general way of living life.
araeph
That's just not the kind of life I think she wants for herself.
makaveli-the-avatar
It definitely isn't; Toph wants ture freedom and wouldn't want to be made to feel as f she's nothing but and air-baby incubator. Both people are extremely set in those specific ways and wants as well; neither freely compromise and it takes a ton for them to do so.
makaveli-the-avatar
I think because of that unwillingness to compromise themselves, if they were to get together later on down the line, they'd be in constant conflict with each other.
araeph
Though it A:TLA, when they had conflicts, they did eventually find a way through it. It would take a while; they'd have to be patient with each other.
makaveli-the-avatar
It's interesting you say that, because I think they ironically had just a little bit more conflict than Kataang.
makaveli-the-avatar
There was Bitter Work, which did show them solving a problem, though that was more about Aang's problem than Toph's.
makaveli-the-avatar
Then after that, there wasn't very much interpersonal interaction between them, was there? You'll have to jog my memory a little if I'm missing some huge problems
araeph
That's true. But in the Rift, although the comics in general are horrible, Aang and Toph clash over whether a spiritual place remaining sacred is more important than upending the lives of the people who currently live there.
It ends with the festival taking place, but just in a different way, with people recreating the festival using craftsmanship.
makaveli-the-avatar
Hmmm, I guess that's true, but I suppose if that's the baseline for how they get past conflict, It'd still take a hell of a lot to turn that into a full fleged relationship.
makaveli-the-avatar
Partnership requires both parties to be striving for similar goals; not nesceccarily the exact same, of course, but getting to similar places in life in order to build the foundation they desire.
makaveli-the-avatar
Aang and Toph would have "The Rift" play out constantly, because as established, they're still vastly different people who want different things.
makaveli-the-avatar
Compromise wouldn't be impossible, but it definitely would drain them both to be in a constant position of giving up parts of themselves in order to get basic respect and decency from each other.
makaveli-the-avatar
And their dilemma in The Rift was a problem with an easy solution, yet it took them nearly coming to blows to solve it.
araeph
The only solution, I think, would be for them not to live together constantly.
araeph
For Toph to allow Aang his freedom as an Air Nomad, and Aang to respect Toph being an independent spirit.
They would have to find more Air Nomads, perhaps in hiding, to take the burden off them both. (And not through opening the spirit portals, Bryke!)
makaveli-the-avatar
Yeah, but one thing though is that I wouldn't want Aang to just stumble on a bunch of random Air Nomads hiding out, mostly because I think that's too cheap and easy, and because I've wanted the spirituality of bending to be fully fleshed out by having the refugees of the Air Temples develop air-bending.
makaveli-the-avatar
There being other air-benders would elimibate one big problem, the other would be learning to respect each other's differences while at the same time trying to add to each other's life.
makaveli-the-avatar
Which means you're right that they probably couldn't live together while trying to figure all this out and how to make it work.
makaveli-the-avatar
Man, this is why I wish Kataang's development wasn't so atrocious and Bryke never touchef the romance in ATLA; it makes trying to sip characters who SHOULD work well so frustratingly hard to do.
araeph
Agreed.
