The Walt Disney Cough is legendary among those who knew and, more specifically, those who worked with him. Some claim it was a result of his heavy smoking while others insist Walt did it on purpose as a means of letting animators know he was coming. Lillian Disney once said to a journalist:
We can always tell where he is. If we’re in a crowd or anything and I’ll say “Well, where’s Walt?” “I don’t know.” Pretty soon I’ll hear that cough and I’ll say “Oh yeah, there he is.” It’s just sort of clearing his throat.
